On Saturday morning, I popped into the Limousin barn and thought I stepped into a barber shop. There was Cole Abele, of Nevada, using clip- pers to shave down the legs of a Lim-Flex heifer named Yes- terday. He carefully worked with a skip tooth comb to get Yesterday’s coat looking just the way he wanted it, then sprayed on some Prime Time adhesive to keep everything in place. Jeff Bond, 45, of Nevada, stepped up to use what looked like an industrial blow dryer to get rid of any dust or dirt on Yesterday’s neighbor, Yours Truly. Meanwhile, Bond’s son, Brady, 14, used a show stick to help keep Yesterday calm while Abele grabbed the clip- pers to work near the cow’s tail. The precision that Abele displayed while preparing the animal for the show ring was mesmerizing. “You want them to have a nice sheen when they go to the arena,” Bond said, so every detail is addressed. Bond said the work Abele was doing on the cow’s legs is called boning, and it helps “enhance and compliment the way the cattle look.” “We want to compliment their features,” Bond said. “See, these cattle have nice rump structure” — a phrase that, if used outside of a live- stock barn, will likely get you slapped. Bond said the boning bal- ances out the cattle. “We want them to carry the greatest per- centage of their body weight from the last rib back,” he said. All the while, Abele was carefully combing and clip- ping Yesterday, applying Final Bloom spray to the clippers then to the coat to get that sheen just right. Preparing the cattle for this kind of treatment starts early and simply. Bond said the ani- mals are washed daily, then their legs are combed to get them used to grooming. “It’s a training process,” he said. “The first time you groom them, they fight it. But they get used to the comb, then the blow dryer,” Abele said, adding that it takes about two weeks to get the cattle used to it. As he paused his work on Yours Truly, he said, “Amonth ago, I wouldn’t be able to do this.” It takes about 20 minutes to get each cow ready for the ring. When I asked him if he ever felt like a barber, Abele gave me a “What are you, nuts?” look and said, “I grew up doing this.” He works for a lot of different cattle produc- ers, so for him, show prepara- tion is just part of the job. “You raise ‘em, then you clip ‘em,” he said. Bond said that after the fair, the exhibitors will take about two months off, then get back at it again. “The state fair is the pinna- cle for us,” he said. “Every- thing leads up to this.” Bond looked around the barn and started counting. He said Abele is teaching six young exhibitors the trade — not just clipping but also the production side of raising cat- tle. We talked for a couple of minutes about how important that is, keeping Missouri’s agriculture community going strong by educating and en- couraging youth. Abele then sprayed a little more Final Bloom on Yester- day. She was good to go. “They lead a pretty pam- pered life,” Bond said. “I’d say they look better than I do.” Getting cattle ready is all in the details Bob Satnan Cole Abele, of Nevada, trims the coat of his Lim-Flex heifer Yours Truly before it goes to the show ring Saturday morning on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. It’s the only hunting sportwhere the more is the merrierI have no idea when, where or under what

circumstances the expression of total exasper-ation, “Lord love a duck,” was coined.I’m certain that the person who uttered it

had never shouldered a shotgun and tried toupend a dove as it zipped past at only a trifleunder the speed of sound, because if he had,he wouldn’t have besmirched a relativelystraightforward bird like the duck.I have often said, “Lord love a dove,” (or

words to that effect) while standing in a stub-ble field with a growing pile of empty shot-gun shells at my feet.I had plenty of time to practice. InAugust

of the year I turned 16, I walked into a hard-ware store — by myself if you can imaginesuch a thing — and handed the man behindthe counter a $100 bill. In return, he gave mea brand new Remington Model 870 12-gaugepump shotgun, one box of shells and a quar-ter.On Sept. 1, I sallied forth to slay the wily

dove. I did, too, on my 14th shot. The bird fellinto some tall weeds, and I couldn’t find it. Iended the evening without that first box ofshells and with only four doves in the gamevest I’d hoped was big enough when I boughtit.I was more than ready to give up, but my

mother didn’t believe in quitting. The nextday, I bought another box of shells andreturned to the scene of the prior day’s humil-iation.But this time, I paid more attention to

where I positioned myself, and I tried a lotharder to remember the things I’d been taughtabout wing shooting. At sunset, there were only two shells left

in the box, but my game vest bulged with a10-dove limit. And thus was I hooked ondove hunting for life.I was also hooked on learning the art and

science of hitting a moving target that canchange speed, direction or both in an instant.Making the most of my chances wasn’t an

option in my teenage years, because one boxof shells (25) per hunt was all I could afford. If I ran out of shells before I’d killed 10doves, I went home with what I had.I guess you could say my efforts paid off.

Not only have I long since lost track of thenumber of one-box limits I’ve taken, but overthe ensuing 49 years, I’ve killed 10-bird lim-its without a miss 13 times and 12-bird limitsstraight 7 times. Then some evil-minded government offi-

cial raised the limit to 15. Since then, I’veonly managed to leave the second box ofshells unopened twice, and both times, the15th bird was downed with the 25th shell Ifired. The best wing shot I’ve ever seen in action

would have snorted at my “art and science”

comment. To him, it was simple. “Just shootwhere they’re gonna be; not where they’vebeen.”There are three ways to put a load of shot

“where they’re gonna be.”One is to point the shotgun a guesstimated

distance in front of the bird and fire. The sec-ond is to, by fair means or fowl, decide howfar to lead the target, establish that lead andmaintain it by swinging the gun in sync withthe bird. The third is to begin with the barrel

behind the bird, swing it fast enough to over-take the bird and— while keeping the gun inmotion — fire the instant the barrel passes thebird’s beak.I know I’m about to give many self-pro-

claimed and more than a few bonafide expertsapoplexy, but over the course of a typicaldove shoot, I’ll probably use all three. Butthat doesn’t mean you should or shouldn’tfollow suit. The point-and-shoot with a stationary

shotgun is most often used by beginners, andthe results are an ammo maker’s dreamscome true.Point-and-shoot is a technique for experts

only. I use it when I get surprised by a doveand have only a split second to shoot. Afternearly five decades, I have a pretty good ideawhere that dove’s gonna be, so I shoot at thatspot.I know some good shotgun shooters who

swear by the sustained lead method, so Icouldn’t in good conscience discourage any-one from experimenting with it. When I try touse it, I tend to “ride” the target. That’s a surerecipe for needing that second box of shells. When I’m at my best, I rely on the swing-

through method, because it allows my eyesand my body to coordinate without interfer-ence from mental second-guessing. Givenfree rein to do so, my instincts will computeswing speed, lead and firing with amazingaccuracy. But for all of that, dove hunting is more

than just taking home a limit. It’s the onlyhunting sport I can think of when the more isoften the merrier. I often find myself standingwithin talking distance of someone who, upuntil that moment, had been a completestranger.Meeting new people outdoors can be fun,

and strangers tend to cheer each other’s suc-cesses and ignore each other’s goofs. Thatcan be refreshing.

The Way Your Community IsBuilt Could Be Affecting Your

Family’s Weight(NAPS)—Take a look around your city and neighborhood. Are there side-

walks? Where is the closest grocery store? Can you get there, or anywhere, with-out a car?

Does your hometown or neighborhood make it easy for you and your childrento be active in your daily lives? In countless communities across the nation, theanswer is no. And with one in every three children considered overweight orobese—a figure that has more thandoubled in the last 30 years—theneed to change this situation isgreat.

Research shows that the wayour communities are constructedcontributes to weight gain in oursociety. Known as the “built envi-ronment,” it includes the wayeverything from your home, yourneighborhood and your communi-ty to roads, travel and work spaceare laid out.

Experts say built environmentsdon’t just affect physical activity—they also affect the foods we chooseand the time we spend inside (like-ly in front of a television or com-puter screen), both major influ-encers of weight.

For example, many communi-ties don’t have grocery stores, which can mean reduced access to fresh and nutritious foods. In many places, con-venience stores and corner markets offering packaged, processed snack foods arethe only choices available.

Some neighborhoods do not have safe playgrounds or sidewalks, so childrenare forced to spend their free time indoors. Sitting instead of moving makes itmuch harder to maintain a healthy weight.

So what can you do to change this?Start by making a list of the improvements you could make in your communi-

ty, and then get together with your neighbors and local leaders to discuss how youcan make those ideas a reality.

Many communities have started by improving access to and maintenance oflocal parks; requesting safe and usable bike paths and sidewalks; asking forhealthier meals andmore physical activity at school; and exploring how to addressa lack of nutritious food options and grocery stores.

For other tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle, go to theWe Can! (Ways toEnhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition)® website:http://wecan.nhlbi.nih.gov.WeCan! is a science-based program developed by theNational Institutes of Health to provide tools and strategies for parents, caregiversand entire communities to help children—and whole families—maintain a healthyweight.

So open your eyes to the possibilities of how even small steps—establishing acommunitywide walk-to-school program, for example—can make a big differencein your family’s and your community’s health.
