Era Baru Hubungan Indonesia-Australia

Hubungan Indonesia-Australia sebagai dua negara yang bertetangga dekatdiwarnai oleh dinamika. Kedekatan kedua negara tidak hanya secara geografis,tetapi juga emosional. Hubungan itu penuh dengan kemesraan tetapi kadang-kadang juga timbul persoalan-persoalan.

Kita tahu bahwa kerjasama bilateral dalam berbagai bidang sudah terbentuk sejaklama. Dalam bidang pendidikan, misalnya, Australia banyak memberikankesempatan kepada orang-orang Indonesia untuk memperdalam ilmu. Saat ini,Australia menjadi pilihan utama untuk pemuda-pemudi Indonesia untukmelanjutkan studinya. Mengapa Australia menjadi pilihan? Selain karenakedekatan geografis juga karena mutu pendidikan di banyak universitas diAustralia dianggap baik.

Penduduk Indonesia di daerah Nusa Tenggara Timur, Maluku Tenggara, danPapua sudah lama berhubungan dengan penduduk di daerah utara dan baratAustralia. Karena itu, umumnya penduduk di daerah itu mengerti dan kadang-kadang dapat berbahasa Indonesia. Jadi tidak mengherankan bahwa bahasaIndonesia diajarkan menjadi bahasa kedua di sekolah-sekolah di daerah itu.

Kenangan liburan siswa SMU Australia di Bali

Sembilan belas murid dari sebuah Sekolah Menengah Umum Australia disertaitiga guru dan empat orang dewasa tiba di Bali pada tanggal 15 Mei.

Rombongan itu dijemput dengan wajah tersenyum oleh pemandu wisata yangbernama Ramos dan sopir yang bernama Ketut. Mereka naik bis yang ber-AC kehotel Ananda, yang terletak di tengah sawah kecil di Ubud. Karena capai sekali,kebanyakan murid tertidur dengan cepat walaupun ada beberapa ekor cicak didalam kamar tidur mereka. Tur dimulai keesokan harinya dengan kunjungan keMas untuk melihat pusat pengukir kayu dan pusat pembuat topeng. Kemudianmereka ke desa Celuk yang terkenal dengan industri perak.

Seorang murid bernama Ben membawa futbal kecil, yang disepaknya ke sawah.Tanpa berpikir, Ben terjun ke sawah untuk mendapatkan futbalnya. Dia jatuh kedalam lumpur. Ben mencoba keluar dari lumpur itu tetapi dia jatuh lagi. Diatertutup lumpur dari kepala sampai kaki! Dia bangkit dari tengah-tengah lumpurseperti raksasa. Itu tentu saja kelihatan lucu sekali, tetapi Ben tidak bisa mengertimengapa semua murid lain tertawa terbahak-bahak.

Hari berikutnya, rombongan itu mengunjungi tempat-tempat yang indah danmenarik di seluruh Pulau Bali, termasuk bangunan-bangunan kuno yang memilikinilai arsitektur tinggi seperti Candi Tanah Lot dan Candi Mengwi.

Rombongan itu juga mengunjungi dua sekolah, yang terletak di kota Denpasar,untuk berinteraksi dengan para murid di sekolah itu. Di sekolah tersebut, murid-murid Australia berkenalan dengan murid-murid Bali dan mereka saling dapatmempraktekkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris dan berbahasa Indonesia bersama-sama. Seorang murid bernama Hayley merasa malu ketika dia salah berkata 'Sayaberumur limapuluh tahun' padahal umurnya baru limabelas tahun. Walaupundemikian kesalahan yang menjadi tertawaan seperti itu mengatasi kesulitanpertama untuk berkenalan, dan memulai percakapan.
