New Mahon Pool amenitiesThe following article is fromRandwick News 30.10.18:- “Say goodbye to the old redbrick toilet block”“New toilets, change rooms andshowers will be available toswimmers at the popularMahon Pool in Maroubra inearly 2019, Randwick MayorKathy Neilson announcedtoday.

The existing building, which dates from the 1950s, will bedemolished to make way for new male and female toilets,change rooms, bike racks, accessible toilets and extensivelandscaping. An additional smaller building will be built for thewinter swimming club.

There will be temporary public toilets and space for the swimclub to use during construction.

“Mahon Pool is a lovely, sheltered place to swim if peoplearen’t keen to tackle the waves of Maroubra Beach,” saidMayor Neilson. “It’s a favourite of both recreational and clubswimmers, and both groups will appreciate the upgradedamenities which have been designed to blend in with the lovelysandstone surroundings of the area.”

A café will not be part of the design after Council resolved at ameeting not to include this in the new plans followingcommunity feedback.

Funding for the project has been allocated as part of Council’sOur Community Our Future program in the 2018-19 CapitalWorks Budget.”

The proceedings commenced with posthumous honour award presentedto Bernie Spies family. Bernie who sadly passed in January contributedgreatly to the Seals Winter Swimming Club and also the Seals IndoorSwimming Club and will be sadly missed.

Congratulations to Tim O’Rourke winning the 2 Bernie’s trophy for firstplace in the 90 metres closest to time. The trophy, presented for the firsttime, is named in honour of Bernie Spies and Bernie Carmudie.
