Pizza Hut and GCISDNutrition Services is excited to continue our partnership with Pizza Hut this school year! Beginning September 6th Pizza Hut pizzas will be available at our Elementary Schools according to the delivery cycle printed on each month’s calendar. The pizzas are specially made with whole grains and low sodium ingredients to comply with USDA meal pattern regulations. That means these cheese or pepperoni slices can be teamed up with your student’s favorite sides and non-fat milk for a reimbursable meal!
Mission Statement The Nutrition Services Department at Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District is committed to providing a nutritious meal to every child. By providing children of our community with quality food and service, we are valuable partners in education. Our efforts as professionals in child nutrition will further the growth and success of our students, staff and community.
What Is A Reimbursable Meal?GCISD participates in the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program and receives government reimbursement and donated commodities for each meal served. In return, the district must serve meals which comply with specific guidelines based on the 2010 Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and USDA standards. All schools must offer foods individually or in combination dishes from the following main food groups (called meal components): • Grains • Fruit • Protein • Vegetable • Milk
Students are encouraged to try an item from each offered component and may select all 5 of the offered components for the most balanced meal. The minimum number of components required is 3, to be considered a reimbursable meal. All reimbursable meals must include the selection of at least 1 fruit or 1 vegetable. Students who select fewer than 3 components or who do not choose a fruit or vegetable will be charged based on a la carte pricing. GCISD uses the Offer vs Serve method (except Pre-K) to allow students more flexibility when choosing from multiple main dishes, side dishes, fruits and vegetables every day. Daily non-fat milk options include white, chocolate and strawberry. One or more vegetarian options are offered each day.
GCISD Elementary and Middle Schools follow all federal, state and local school nutrition regulations. For more information about the specific guidelines concerning student meals please visit www.gcisd-k12.org
Check Acceptance for MealsChecks must have the following:
1. A pre-printed name and address (no temporary checks accepted)
2. The current date3. Written to the name of the school
cafeteria or Nutrition Services4. The student’s name or 6 digit student
ID number written in the memo section
Returned Checks with Insufficient Funds (NSF) In the event that a check written to Nutrition Services is returned unpaid by your bank, GCISD or its agent will redeposit your check electronically. NSF checks are sent to Paytek to be processed on behalf of the District to collect the unpaid amount and returned check fee(s). You may contact Paytek at 1-800-641-9998 to remedy this matter.
Visit the district website at www.gcisd-k12.org throughout the year for additional information from Nutrition Services. We look forward to serving your child this school year.
Pre K Meals Update GCISD Nutrition Services offers nutritious meals to all students in the district. Students in Pre-Kindergarten may qualify for breakfast and lunch at no charge or at a reduced cost. To learn more about Pre-K meals and benefits visit www.gcisd-k12.org/Page/532.

GCISD Nutrition Services Receives the Best of the Bunch Award! Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) honored GCISD Nutrition Services with a Best of the Bunch Award for its achievement in Commissioner Miller’s 2016 Local Products Challenge. Winners of this award successfully incorporated local ingredients from Texas in at least three of the following meal components: milk, protein, fruits, vegetables or grains. More than 140 school districts participated in the 2016 Local Products Challenge. Seventy-seven districts earned a Best of the Bunch Award representing their commitment to serving three or more local products in the school meal served to students.

Schools in Philadelphia & Boston began serving lunch
as early as 1896. The National School Lunch Act was
enacted in 1946 and a true commitment was made to
school lunch. Over the last 70 years, school lunch has
evolved in many ways. From Salisbury steak to Kale
Citrus Salad, school lunches are the healthiest they
have been in many, many years. All of the meals we
offer today, were made possible because 2 cities had
a passion to feed kids in school!

Do you brown bag it or school lunch it? Which one is the
healthier choice? School meals feature whole grains, fruits,
vegetables and low-fat dairy. They are developed from
evidence-based guidelines. A 2014 study found that packed
lunches from home were often foods that were energy-dense
but nutrient-poor. Only 25 percent of those lunches met the
same nutrient-rich standards as the National School Lunch
Program. Visit your local school cafeteria and let’s do lunch!

How we eat and what we eat affects how we do in school,
sports and extra-curricular activities. There is a reason that
breakfast has been labeled “The most important meal of
the day.” Eating a balanced breakfast every day helps you
learn better and keeps you focused in class, studies prove
it! While breakfast is important, what you typically eat each
day is even more important. Making sure you eat
balanced meals & snacks will help give you energy &
keep you focused all day.
FIESTADAMelty cheese topped with a blend of special ingredients make this a fusion favorite we couldn’t resist bringing back!

The school year is already
coming to an end! How tim
e
flies...The last Farm Fresh
Friday feature this year is ou
r
friend the little blueberry.
During the summer month’s,
when the weather can be ve
ry
hot it is important to drink
water and eat many fruits an
d
veggies because they contai
n so
much water! Blueberries con
tain
antioxidants which are
important in keeping you
healthy. Stop by this May to
get some, you’ll be berry
glad you did!
Did you know you are made of over 60% water? Water
plays an important role in the major functions of your body
and every system depends on it. Heat, humidity and physical
activity can increase our need to drink water. When you are
active for more than 1 hour, be sure to re-hydrate with
water. The average person should drink about 8 cups per
day so, be sure to drink up to stay healthy this summer!
