QUOTING CHUCK NOLL (Post-Game):

(What Happened on Third and one?): "We were confused. We wanted to run one of twoplays we had prepared depending on what defense they were in. In the huddle, it tooktoo long to taLc. Then, at the line of scrirmiage, there wasn't time to call the audible. It didn't work. "We wanted a play action pass."

"Offensively, we Troved the football but made mistakes. We just killed ourselveswith turnovers. The defense can' t play any better. They played alnc'st the entiregame and scored points for us"

(The Stealers looked confused on offense?): "Mo question. about it. We'll have to preparebetter and spend nnre tine on the offense. We took too mwh tine in the huddle onseveral occasions and then when we wanted to audiblize at the line of. scrirage, therewasn't sufficient tine. We got the play called, but we had to rush. The defensivelooks the 49ers gave us shouldn't have confused us, but they apparently did.

(What about the play of the San Francisco secondary?): "They are very active and todaywere all over the place. They play the ball well and catch it well. We also threwright into the strength of their coversage."

(The Stealer offense has strugged of late?): "We've also played sone pretty good defen-sive football teams. The 49ers' biggest improvement is their defense.

(Where Ebes the Team Stand Now at 5-4?): "We're 5-4. That's exactly where we stand. We're playing good defensive football, but have some work to do on our offense.?

(Can You Still Salvage the season?): "Yes, of course. If the whole team plays theway the defense did today, it won' t even he close. Sure, you' re discouraged by atough loss like this. There was a great effort by both football teams and a lot ofhard hitting. You like to win this kind of game."

SAN FRANCISOD COACH BILL W\LSH:

(On playing in Pittsburgh): "Pittsburgh is possibly the best franchise in the league.I feel very positive about our football team because we cane here and won in Pittsburgh.I'm proud we could stand in against this team and hold our own.

(Was this the biggest physical test of the year?): "I think it was a good, clean, hard-hitting game for both sides. I thinic the hard hits caused the turnovers."

(about as Joe Montana): He's a tremendously resourceful young QB. When he makes amistake, he doesn't get too upset. He talks to the players involved and then goesright back in there.

"Our passing game is the differencç. We try to control the ball with the pass.

(Are you surprised by Montana's poise): "It doesn't surprise me any rinre. He's agreat young football player with only three years in the NFL and the key is that he isa very instinctive player.

(What about Carlton Williamson. Did you know what you had back in training camp):"We thought we knew what we had back then. The scouting rankings had him very low, butwe didn't understand why. We decided to take him and he's developed into one of thegreat strong safeties in pro football.

(What About Steelers Third and one play late in fourth QT? Did you expect the Stealersto pass?) "We had to be ready for anything. We had lots of tine to get ready for the playOur young defensive backs may be the best in the game today."

(What about the Stealers?): "I think Pittsburgh is a strong team. I think they willcare back and have a winning season and make the playoffs."
