Da Vinci Science Award In the latter part of October 2016, PSHS Cagayan Valley Campus (CVC) scholar Hannah Keren Duque was conferred the Da Vinci Science Award by the ASEAN Center for the Gifted in Science. In addition to this award, is a scholarship given by ACGS. Ms. Genalyn Alice R. Viloria, Special Science Teacher from CVC

wrote: “The award is given to students who exhibit an extraordinary potential to excel in science and technology careers. It was first for the Philippines.” Duque joined the CVC team who participated in the 5th ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APT JSO) last June 2016. The CVC team finished in Second Place (overall) after competing with 28 teams from ASEAN countries

plus China, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, and Sweden. This year’s Da Vinci Science Awardees Duque and Teo Siang Jun of Brunei Darussalam were selected from all the contestants in the recently-held APT JSO. Below is a photo of Duque re-ceiving the Da Vinci Science Award from ACGS.

The PSHS System is in full force

during the application period for the Na-

tional Competitive Examination (NCE) to

ensure that the public is well-informed of

the application period, process, qualifica-

tions, and the benefits of being a PSHS

scholar.

It is a priority of the agency to

reach out to the different parts of the

country and encourage the gifted Filipino

youth in Science and Technology (S&T)

to be a part of this country’s premiere

science high school. In PSHS, they can

harness their skills and talent in S&T.

In the most recent NCE held in

October 2016, the PSHS System pro-

cessed a total of 25,405 qualified applica-

tions, and 22,547 of these applicants took

the examination.

The establishment of a PSHS

campus in every region of the country is a

mandate of PSHS to expand their service

delivery. The existence of a PSHS cam-

pus in every region in the country in-

creases the scholarship’s availability and

accessibility, particularly in the provinces

and rural areas.

For the breakdown of NCE ap-

plicants and examinees by region of

origin, turn to page 4.

2016 Breakthrough Challenge In December 2016, PSHS East-ern Visayas Campus (EVC) scholar Hil-lary Diane Andales reached the Top 6 Finalist in the 2016 Breakthrough Chal-lenge for her video entry entitled “Feynman’s Path Integrals” where she discussed about (perhaps) the greatest generalization in Physics: Path Integral,

using terms that common people can re-late to. This Challenge brought together 6,000 entries from 146 countries. Andales also bagged the special award: Most Popular Vote Challenge that rewards the winner with $100,000.00 state-of-the-art Science Laboratory for her school.

Breakdown of NCE applicants and examinees by region of origin:

To be the leading science high school in the Asia Pacific region is the Vision of the Philippine Science High School System. Together, all PSHS campuses are geared to prepare their scholars to become globally-competitive Filipino scientists equipped with 21st century skills and imbued with the core values of truth, excellence, and service to the na-tion.

13th International Junior Science Olympiad Ending the year right, MC schol-ars were recognized in the 13th Interna-tional Junior Science Olympiad held in Bali, Indonesia. Silver Award went to Arthur Reiner De Belen, while Bronze Awards were given to Israel Aguba, Patricia Ni-cole Bianzon, Josh Magnus Ludan, and Celestina Diane Nicole Larona. The scholars were mentored by MC Special Science Teachers Dr. Mela-nie Anne Cheng and Ms. Anna Carmela Bonifacio.
