We give thanks this month for our 7th graders! At PPS,

we are so fortunate to have such brilliant and well-

behaved students. This month will be full of

challenging but creative activities.

The students will be reading A Christmas Carol by

Charles Dickens. As you know, there are many versions

of this story in books and movies. We will be reading

the original version, written by Charles Dickens. Please

do not allow your student to watch a movie version

instead of reading the book. Each student must have his

or her own novel in order to take notes and highlight

key passages. We prefer that all students have the same

copy of the novel so we can quickly refer to specific

page numbers in our discussions. We will offer an

inexpensive paperback edition of this novel in the next

couple of weeks.

Each quarter, in order to encourage reading for fun,

students will choose a novel to read, then take an AR

test on that novel before the end of the quarter. The

novel must have an AR test available and be written at

least at a middle school interest level. There is an AR

link on the PPS website for students to check to see if

their novels are acceptable.

We will focus on the descriptive mode of writing this

quarter. Students will design their own restaurant menus

and write vivid descriptions of each item, using sensory

imagery. We will start the rough drafts in class, and

then we will do the finished published menus in our

computer lab.

Students will also write a descriptive essay in relation to

the novel, A Christmas Carol, using figurative language

and sensory imagery. We will try to keep the calendar

updated on Mrs. Walton’s webpage on the Phillips Prep

website. If you have any questions or concerns, the

most efficient way to reach the 7th Grade Language Arts

teachers is through email. Mrs. Walton can be reached

at [email protected], and Mrs. McCullough’s email

is [email protected].

Red Ribbon Week

Our students raised $237.83 with our Red Ribbon Project, “Stomp Out Diabetes!” We will use the proceeds to sponsor current students at PPS to attend Camp Sugar Falls this summer. Thank you again for your support of this worthy cause!

Sunny D Announcements

As a reminder, our school is still participating in the Sunny D book spree. This program will donate 20 free, well-conditioned books to Spencer Elementary School, for every 20 UPC labels we bring in. Spencer is our neighbor elementary school that is in desperate need for library books and this is our chance to help them out! I hope you will support this worthy program and bring in those Sunny D UPC labels. We only have a few UPC’s, so continue asking your parents and siblings to collect them. There is a box labeled Sunny D in the front lobby. Simply place your collection sheet, with your name and homeroom written on there, in the box and we will do the rest. If you have any questions, ask Emily Jordan or Kyla Brooks. Thanks!!

invites you to participate in our 8th Grade Parent Night!

We are getting our 8th graders ready for high school! It is too early to pre-register for high school, but it is not too early for our students and parents to learn about specific programs

available at the various high schools.

We would love to have you come and hear from some of the high school representatives.

The program is scheduled to be held in the Phillips Preparatory Gym, Tuesday, January 11, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m.

We hope to see you there!

** Every high school in Mobile County is extended and invitation to participate. We will let

students know what schools have confirmed to participate this year as the date approaches.

Football Summary The Pirate football team ended the season with 22-0 beat down of the Semmes Bulldogs.

Although only leading 6-0 at the half, the Pirates were in complete control from the start. The

offense, directed by Graham Kercher, lead a masterful 13 play, 95 yard drive for the games first

score, and Lorenzo Martin five yard touchdown run. The defense, lead by Malik Emmett, Mac Smith,

Trey Turner, Nate Archie, Jared Holland, Trejon Hunter, Deanthony Jackson, Jaylon Barren, Jaylon

Scriven, and Shawntell Benard, shut down the passing and rushing attack of Semmes which had

beaten Denton Middle School earlier this season. Nate Archie forced and recovered a fumble for the

Pirate defense.

On offense, the offensive line, led by Matthew Johnson, Malik Emmett, Mac Smith, Walter

Little, and Gage Swann opened holes all night while blocking on the outside was provided by Jaylon

Scriven, Jared Holland, and Trey Turner. Overall, the offense piled up over 300 yards rushing the

ball. Shawntell Benard helped out with 90 yards rushing, along with an amazing 75 yard punt return

for a touchdown. Walter Little had 60 yards rushing, along with two successful two point

conversions. Jared Holland had 35 yards rushing and Lorenzo Martin led the way with 120 yards

rushing and a five yard touchdown. Seventh grade quarterback Trejon Hunter ran for a 35 yard

touchdown late in the game to cap off a dominating performance by the Pirates. Congratulations on a

great season, and now we return our attention to the Pirate basketball teams. First home game will be

Monday, November 8, 2010, Starting at 3:30. We hope to see you there!

Kat Says… Although the eighth graders are going crazy about The Giver, the

sixth graders are in a state of relaxation and rest…well before their next test that is. We all have a lot to do here at PPS, so parents…please go easy on the kids. The eighth graders have tons of tests coming up, and the EQTs are fast approaching. The Veteran‘s Holiday is coming up on the eleventh so that means NO SCHOOL for every student in Mobile County. The Thanksgiving break will be here any moment and then Christmas will be here before we know it. If any kids bring in five Box Tops, they will be put into a drawing for a ten dollar iTunes gift card, so bring in the Box Tops and support the school. The next school dance is sometime in February and the sixth and seventh graders will have tons of tests, as will the eighth graders. The time for celebration is coming up, so if you have a grandfather or know anyone who‘s a veteran, go somewhere and celebrate this amazing country. We have a ‗Get out of Jail Free‘ card, so use it! Well, I‘ll have to write more next time because this is only supposed to be a page and I‘m really starting to run out of sp-

SCHOOL TRAFFIC GUIDELINES PPS administrators and faculty members work diligently to ensure the safety of students and provide for the orderly flow of traffic. Sometimes you will be asked to pull-up, unload, park or exit in a direction which is not your preference. Please follow all directions and do what is best for everyone. Approximately 350 automobiles flow through the campus every morning and every afternoon. Additionally, there are 12 buses that carry over 400 students. Our goal is to get everyone on and off campus as quickly as possible without an accident or injury. We appreciate your assistance in following the guideline listed below.

Morning

Please have your child ready to exit the car as soon as you come to a full stop.

Wait your turn. Do not unload students until you have pulled up to the crosswalk.

Use all 3 ―drop‖ lanes in the parking area by the gym and band room.

Watch out for the other guy. Look out for students crossing though traffic in the unloading area.

No cars are allowed to pull in front of the school until after the buses have departed. The front area is reserved for buses from 6:40 – 7:05 a.m.

There are two drop lanes in front of the school. Stay in those lanes even after unloading your student until you have passed the crosswalk.

For safety reasons, please do not use your cell phone while in the car pool line.

Afternoon Students may be picked up in the gym parking lot area until 2:45 P.M. After 2:45 all students

will be moved to the front of the school to await pick-up. You may pull in front of the school for pick-up after the buses have departed (2:40.)

If you arrive on campus for pick-up prior to 2:30, you may park to wait in four areas. 1) In one of the 3 lanes next to the gym; 2) in the next parking area where the staff has parked- try to back into the spot; 3) in 2 single file lines in the area next to Sidney Phillips Drive; and 4) next to the front grassy area, no further than the first light pole.

Tell your student where you will pick him/her up. If you are picking up in the front, there is no reason for the student to go to the gym area, and vice versa.

Any student who is not picked up by 3:00 will be sent to Extended Day. The cost is $5.00 per hour.

Be courteous and patient and on the lookout for others vehicles. Remember, WE WANT EVERYONE TO BE SAFE!

As all of you are aware, PPS has limited parking and driving area. Please work with us to get everyone on and off campus as quickly and safely as possible.

We do not receive any federal funds, so we have to be creative in generating funds to support our program. Here is how you can help:

FUNDRAISER INFORMATION

The Campbell‘s Labels for Education™

program is a great way to get FREE

merchandise for our school.

Participating in the program is easy —

simply save proofs of purchase from

participating Campbell products and

drop them off in the wooden box located

in the lobby or send them to Mrs.

Brightman.

The Box Tops for Education program is very successful at PPS! To participate in the program, simply save box tops from participating products. Students will receive collection sheets during homeroom for exciting bonus opportunities throughout the year. For more

information, see Dr. Kennedy.

Cartridges for Kids is a recycling program that pays PPS cash for empty laser and inkjet cartridges, used cell phones, laptops, PDAs, GPS systems and iPods. You can bring in your items and deposit them in the library.

Help PPS earn 5% in credit to use towards free supplies. If you shop at Office Depot for school supplies, be sure to provide our schools’ identification number each time you make a purchase. Office Depot will award us 5% of the qualifying purchases. Our school

identification number is: 70001655.

As you have probably seen, PPS has recycling bins in two locations. One is in the front of the school and one is by the band room. Help the Environment by recycling your aluminum cans here at PPS! All cans must be crushed and bundled in bags!

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) wants you to come and join them every Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. in the gym. Everyone is welcome! You do not have to be an athlete to attend. If you have any questions, please see Coach Turnipseed or Mrs. Pierce.

MathCounts

MATHCOUNTS is a prestigious international math competition designed for middle school students. The problems and work are very challenging and require much effort and extra work outside of the regular math classes. MATHCOUNTS sessions end at 3:30 p.m. Parents are required to pick up their child no later than 3:45 p.m. Any child not picked up by that time will be taken to Extended Day and will be charged a fee of $5.00 per hour.

DUKE TIP Many of our 7th graders qualified to participate in the Duke Tip Talent Search based on their 6th grade Stanford Achievement scores.

By qualifying, the students are eligible to take the ACT or SAT this year. We are very proud of our students for their accomplishment!
