PIRATES SPYGLASS
Welcome and Welcome Back! I would like to take this time to welcome our “new”
students and parents to our school. We are thrilled you
chose to join our Phillips’ family and we hope your
year with us will be a successful one. I would like to
say “welcome back” to our returning students and
parents. We look forward to continuing our “journey
to success” at PPS.
We have had a G-R-E-A-T opening and we just believe
it is a great start to wonderful year. In order for the
students to reach that level of success, we need a
commitment from them to complete all homework and
class assignments, study for all tests and put forth the
effort it takes to be a “great” student. We will certainly
do our part by providing a great education experience
that will prepare all students for high school, college
and beyond.
I look forward to working with you throughout the
year and I am confident that this is the year and it is
going to be an awesome one.
Mrs. Hartzog

Eighth Grade News
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! -Francis Bacon
How quickly time flies for sixth grade language arts!! First quarter has been a time of adjustments and challenges for many students. The sixth grade language arts teachers would like to thank all the parents who are supporting our program. We hope that they will talk to their students and discuss the areas of success as well as those that need improvement. Students will need to gather supplies and continue to be on time for class. Second Quarter will be even busier than the first. Students will begin their first novel study as well as begin writing their very own children’s book. More information regarding the novel and the children’s book will be forthcoming. In social studies, the students will be studying the Spanish-American War, World War I and the Jazz Age. Students will work on a PowerPoint presentation on this material.
Soon after 2nd
quarter begins, the eighth grader language arts students will write the Holiday Essay – always a favorite in the Magnetic Attraction! This is the first opportunity for the eighth graders to show off their creative side as they share a favorite holiday tradition or recall a special memory of a winter holiday. Our second quarter novel is The Giver – students love this book! Eighth graders will learn about utopias and explore the notion of a ―perfect‖ world. This book also allows for spirited class discussions on the topic of choices – what are some areas where they have no choice/some choice/ complete choice? And, of course, students will continue their study of grammar and vocabulary. Parents may not be aware that students are encouraged to bring to class examples of vocabulary words that they find in books or magazines, or even hear on TV or in movies. There is a rumor that students can score bonus points for finding these words in everyday life! It’s also time to start thinking about the Holocaust Project. This is an annual service project that the eighth grade class conducts to benefit the Child Advocacy Center on Spring Hill Avenue in memory of the young victims of the Holocaust. After reading Anne Frank Remembered and an excerpt from All but My Life, the students enthusiastically commit to helping victims of injustice in our own community. There will be several opportunities to work after school at the CAC in the coming weeks. It is exciting to see our eighth graders giving back to the community. In math, students will be working on proportions, graphs and functions. The students will need graph paper this quarter. In science, students will be conducting the experiment for their science project beginning on October 11
th through
November 11th
. During this time, they will be recording data and procedural steps and also taking lots of pictures. Our instruction will cover chemical reaction and students will become proficient in balancing chemical equations.
In science, we are studying Genetics and doing DNA Extraction. We will learn about cell division (mitosis). We will also begin experimenting at home with our Science Fair Projects from Oct 12- Nov. 13, 2010! In language arts, we feel invigorated by the crisp fall weather, and we are ready to take on new challenges. The most memorable and creative project we do all year is creating our menus. Students will develop their own restaurants and then design and write a menu, using sensory imagery with vivid adjectives and adverbs. The rough drafts will be started in class and the final printed copy will be done in the computer lab. Another fun activity for seventh graders will be reading a teleplay based on an episode of the Twilight Zone. We will watch the actual episode of ―The Monsters are Due on Maple Street‖ after the students have read the play in class. Our novel for this quarter will be A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, which will put everyone in the holiday spirit. We will have copies of this novel available soon for your child to purchase. In seventh grade language arts, we ask that each student have his or her own copy of the novel, so he or she can follow along and take notes. If you have any questions, about 7
th Grade Language Arts, please
check out Mrs. Walton’s webpage on our Phillips Prep website and feel free to email your Language Arts teachers at [email protected] or Mrs. McCullough at [email protected].

Sunny D Announcements
As a reminder, our school is still participating in the Sunny D book spree. This program will donate 20 free, well-conditioned books to Spencer Elementary School, for every 20 UPC labels we bring in. Spencer is our neighbor elementary school that is in desperate need for library books and this is our chance to help them out! As a reward to you for bringing in 20 UPC’s, you will get a “full” spirit day in October. Also if you bring in 10 UPC’s, you will get a “half” spirit day, and be able to wear a shirt of your choice with your uniform bottoms. I hope you will support this worthy program and bring in those Sunny D UPC labels. We only have a few UPC’s, so continue asking your parents and siblings to collect them. There is a box labeled Sunny D in the front lobby. Simply place your collection sheet, with your name and homeroom written on there, in the box and we will do the rest. If you have any questions, ask Emily Jordan or Kyla Brooks. Thanks!!

$125 for a full page $75 for a half page $50 for a quarter page $30 for an eighth of a page Please submit an original copy of photos to be scanned and any writing for the ad. Yearbook picture quality depends on the quality submitted and the size of the pictures requested. The deadline to purchase an ad is October 22, 2010. See
Mrs. Whitney for details.
Yearbook Photographs
Parents, if you did not agree to have your child photographed on the enrollment card, your child will not be pictured in the 2011
yearbook. Permission forms were sent home to the few students whose parents did not agree to photographs on the back of the
enrollment cards. Please ask your child if he/she received a permission form to have
his/her picture taken only for the yearbook. See Mrs. Whitney in room 2 for questions.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) wants you to come and join them every Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. in the gym. Everyone is welcome! You do not have to be an athlete to attend. If you have any questions, please see Coach Turnipseed or Mrs. Pierce.
MathCounts
MATHCOUNTS is a prestigious international math competition designed for middle school students. The problems and work are very challenging and require much effort and extra work outside of the regular math classes. MATHCOUNTS team members will be meeting each Tuesday with Ms. Sibley and each Thurs. with Dr. Palanki. Dr. Palanki is a parent volunteer who is a professor at USA in chemical engineering. Seventh and eighth grade students have already been pre-selected. Any sixth graders that are interested in participating must go to their math teacher and get a hand written recommendation which they should bring with them to the meetings. MATHCOUNTS sessions end at 3:30 p.m. Parents are required to pick up their child no later than 3:45 p.m. Any child not picked up by that time will be taken to extended day and will be charged a fee of $5.00 per hour.
Box Tops for Education
News and Updates
The Box Tops for Education program is in full swing, and we have gotten off to a great start for the 2010-11 school year. As of September 24, students, teachers,
parents, and friends of the Phillips family have submitted over 17,000 Box Tops ($1,700)! The next
Box Tops activity is the very popular PPS Spirit Day!! Spirit Day is scheduled for October 22, and the
deadline for turning in collection sheets and permission slips is October 19. If you have extra Box Tops, please don’t let them expire. Students may use their extra Box Tops to purchase items from the Box
Tops Store, or they may ―bank‖ the Box Tops and use them for the November activity. Our 2010-11 Box
Tops goal is $5,000. Please ask your friends, family
members, neighbors, and co-workers to help us reach this goal by saving their Box Tops for PPS.
Feel free to contact Dr. Kennedy – [email protected] – if you have questions.

Chorus and
Drama
We have a great choral and dramatic arts program at PPS thanks to our wonderful students and support from
parents, teachers, administrators and friends! Our choral and dramatic arts elective classes at PPS include
beginning and advanced chorus classes for seventh and eighth grade “drama players.” The “drama players”
students indicate an elective preference for drama at the end of their seventh grade year, whereas sixth and
seventh grade students audition in May for the next year’s chorus classes. Sixty-three eighth grade students are
Drama Players this year, and twenty-nine seventh graders and thirty-seven eighth graders make up the sixty-six
singers selected for this year’s chorus.
We are always looking for sponsors for our programs, so if you are interested in supporting choral and dramatic
arts financially or helping with costumes, props, sets, lighting, sound or anything else you think would be helpful,
PLEASE let Mrs. Vera Lynn Sheets know! ([email protected])

Well, congrats parents! You have officially been promoted by the city of Mobile, from money-makin’ machines to chauffeurs for minors. Once again, Congratulations! Over here at Phillips Prep, we’re all enjoying our schedules with our friends while the other middle schoolers had to stay in homeroom all of the first week of school. Thank you Mrs. Sweeney, we all send our love! While the kids in Speech are enjoying their ability to conquer the fear of stage fright, here in Video Production we’re using our artistic ability to write, make videos, and stop world hunger! Okay, so we haven’t exactly gotten to the world hunger part yet, but we will in the future. The entire community of Mobile is freezing their backsides off trying to get their cars revved up in the morning and play a few games of football at night. Unfortunately, our very own Ms. Wells is at Clarke…but on the brighter side, we now have a new assistant principle, Mr. Hendrich. We’re all looking forward to a great new year here at PPS (cheesy, I know.) We had the first Box Top Bash and the Homecoming dance is coming up. Go Pirates! The energizer bunny students are all well known, as are the wall flowers. It is our duty here at PPS to transform those people into the intelligible, social high school and college students, excelling in mathematics and multiple subjects. The sixth graders are getting punched with homework and projects, seventh graders are getting used to the idea of juggling their social life and their advanced homework, and we eighth graders are staying up all night working on our pre-AP classes and gnawing on chocolate bars for dinner. We all agree that it’s worth the slight trouble, for we wish to fulfill our dreams of graduating high school as valedictorian, then moving on to become brain surgeons. Anyway, we all want to be successful, and starting with this year is the perfect way to start it. Until next time, wish us all the best of luck on our assignments and I’ll keep you laughing. After all, it’s not that big of a price, only $19.95 plus shipping and handling. Kathryn Westmark
SCHOOL TRAFFIC GUIDELINES PPS administrators and faculty members work diligently to ensure the safety of students and provide for the orderly flow of traffic. Sometimes you will be asked to pull-up, unload, park or exit in a direction which is not your preference. Please follow all directions and do what is best for everyone. Approximately 350 automobiles flow through the campus every morning and every afternoon. Additionally, there are 122 buses that carry over 400 students. Our goal is to get everyone on and off campus as quickly as possible without an accident or injury. We appreciate your assistance in following the guideline listed below.
Morning
Please have your child ready to exit the car as soon as you come to a full stop.
Wait your turn. Do not unload students until you have pulled up to the crosswalk.
Use all 3 ―drop‖ lanes in the parking area by the gym and band room.
Watch out for the other guy. Look out for students crossing though traffic in the unloading area.
No cars are allowed to pull in front of the school until after the buses have departed. The front area is reserved for buses from 6:40 – 7:05 a.m.
There are two drop lanes in front of the school. Stay in those lanes even after unloading your student until you have passed the crosswalk.
For safety reasons, please do not use your cell phone while in the car pool line.
Afternoon Students may be picked up in the gym parking lot area until 2:45 P.M. After 2:45 all students
will be moved to the front of the school to await pick-up. You may pull in front of the school for pick-up after the buses have departed (2:40.)
If you arrive on campus for pick-up prior to 2:30, you may park to wait in four areas. 1) In one of the 3 lanes next to the gym; 2) in the next parking area where the staff has parked- try to back into the spot; 3) in 2 single file lines in the area next to Sidney Phillips Drive; and 4) next to the front grassy area, no further than the first light pole.
Tell your student where you will pick him. /her up. If you are picking up in the front, there is no reason for the student to go gym area, and vice versa.
Any student who is not picked up by 3:00 will be sent to Extended Day. The cost is $5.00 per hour.
Be courteous and patient and on the lookout for others vehicles. Remember, WE WANT EVERYONE TO BE SAFE!
As all of you are aware, PPS does not have a lot of parking or driving area. Please work with us to get everyone on and off campus as quickly and safely as possible.

We do not receive any federal funds, so we have to be creative in generating funds to support our program. Here is how you can help:
FUNDRAISER INFORMATION
The Campbell’s Labels for Education™
program is a great way to get FREE
merchandise for our school.
Participating in the program is easy —
simply save proofs of purchase from
participating Campbell products and
drop them off in the wooden box located
in the lobby or send them to Mrs.
Brightman.
The Box Tops for Education program is very successful at PPS! To participate in the program, simply save box tops from participating products. Students will receive collection sheets during homeroom for exciting bonus opportunities throughout the year. For more
information, see Dr. Kennedy.
Cartridges for Kids is a recycling program that pays PPS cash for empty laser and inkjet cartridges, used cell phones, laptops, PDAs, GPS systems and iPods. You can bring in your items and deposit them in the library.
Help PPS earn 5% in credit to use towards free supplies. If you shop at Office Depot for school supplies, be sure to provide our schools’ identification number each time you make a purchase. Office Depot will award us 5% of the qualifying purchases. Our school
identification number is: 70001655.
As you have probably seen, PPS has recycling bins in two locations. One is in the front of the school and one is by the band room. Help the Environment by recycling your aluminum cans here at PPS! All cans must be crushed and bundled in bags!
Every year BILLIONS of drink pouches end up in dumpsters and landfills across America. TerraCycle, Capri Sun and Kool-Aid Jammers are working together. The TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade™ program allows our school to collect drink pouches and they will donate $.02 for each one we send them. You can send these flattened and empty pouches to Mrs. Burch.

If you have not joined yet, please do! We need every family to become a member of the Phillips’ Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). There is strength in numbers, and your membership and involvement benefit your child, our school, and its standing among PTSAs statewide and
nationally. For any questions, see Ms. Payne.
Creative Writing Club
Ms. Payne is interested in starting a creative writing club on
Thursdays from 2:35 – 3:35. In this club, students will get to write and share their original works and learn about other
artists of the written word. If you love to write stories, poems or songs, then this club is for you. Interested students need to stop by Ms. Payne’s room (29) to sign up on the sheet outside her door.
Hope to see you on Thursdays!
ART CLUB
The Art Club returned for another great year on September 14th. You do not have to be in art to join the Art Club, and it is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. In the Art Club, students get to create art of their choice, help beautify the school, and create posters and backdrops for a variety of school activities. Interested students need to stop by Ms. Payne’s room (29) to sign up on the sheet outside her door. Hope to see you there!
BOY SCOUTS Does your son like to fish, camp, shoot bows & arrows, swim and kayak? Boy Scouts help boys build character, train in the responsibilities of citizenship, develop personal fitness and is family oriented. There will be a sign-up meeting on Tuesday, October 26
th at 6:00
p.m. in the school cafeteria. This is a great opportunity for your son to enjoy the outdoors and to have fun with other boys! Watch for the flyer coming home to you with all the details! See you there!
DUKE TIP Many of our 7th graders qualified to participate in the Duke Tip Talent Search based on their 6th grade Stanford Achievement scores.
By qualifying, the students are eligible to take the ACT or SAT this year. We are very proud of our students for their accomplishment!

Recycling Contest The Recycling Contest will take place October 12th through October 22nd
We will measure pounds per homeroom. The bags will be placed outside, never being brought in the building. Each grade level will have a separate area for the cans.
If it is raining do not bring them in that day. 1. Students bring 33 crushed cans (preferably) in a plastic
bag. The teacher’s name written on the bag.
2. Homeroom reps will stand by the teacher’s area before school to keep watch and a count of the bags/pounds brought in.
3. During homeroom they will take the bags to the fenced
in area. NOT through the building.
The homeroom with the most pounds will receive a chicken biscuit reward during homeroom.
Mrs. Brightman would like to thank the following
students for their hard work and dedication on this
issue of the Pirates Spyglass newsletter.
