SALT Youth

Be thankful in all circumstances, this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

We have just kicked off the start of JAM! This year is going to be full of fun games, yummy food, and experiencing God in a new way. Come join us every Sunday from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

If you are interested in helping out with our children’s programming, sign up here! Contact Madison Gulley for any questions at 651-295-8257 or [email protected].

SURGE Youth: Ministry of PIPC and Christ the King

As we step into a new season of youth, the SALT youth program will be taking on a new name, a new identity, and an all-around new format. We have partnered with our neighbors just down the road, Christ the King, in order to create a more fun, encouraging, and energy-filled envi-ronment! We now have the opportunity to expect large groups of students and it was a great month of Septem-ber. Because of this new and exciting group a lot of what we have talked about is relationship! We would like to share with you ways that we are doing that. Peer Care- Peer care is exactly what it sounds like. It is the opportunity to care for the people around them. We have encouraged new and old relationships to grow by at-tempting to define what it looks like to be in Christian relationship. This is something all of us can do! Instead of the basic “Hello, how are you?” we have spoken about, asking more meaningful questions such as, “How’s your heart?” Peer Share- Peer share is more challenging for high school students. We have been encouraging them to in-vite people who do not know Christ and to share their faith with them. We are hoping to teach them the skills to be able to communicate the Gospel with anyone!

CONGREGATIONAL SINGING

Martin Luther King and I have something in common. We both believe that congregational singing is most important in teaching what we believe and worshiping together. I hope that you have noticed that I get louder or softer, even slower or faster, change registrations on verses, and even change keys of harmonies in attempting to reflect the text and in-crease the personal and corporate worship experience. I hope you have noticed that we have been singing some new songs and styles. Some you will love and some you won’t love. It takes many repetitions to really learn a new song. Psalm 96 : “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord. Praise His name.” I was thinking about the Gloria Patri (means Glory to God). Even though there are hundreds of arrangements of the Gloria Patri, I have sung the same version of the Gloria Patri pretty much every week for 48 years! We have added a sung congregational response after Lou-is’s Benediction before we go out for the week. We sang “Go Now In Peace” for three months of summer. Some love it. Some don’t. Then we sang “Change My Heart Oh, God.” Now we will sing “Lord, Make Us More Holy.” In a few months we will change to another more reflective of advent. Do you have a favorite or suggestion for a new hymn or re-sponse? Please send it to [email protected] Please remember to be kind. The very piece you love, your neighbor may not. Just as the song your neighbor sings loud and joyfully, is not your favorite. Remember to “Sing to the Lord a new song!” Hallelujah and Amen.

The Blessing of Church Musicians

May the time you find to develop your talents be sacred and abundant.

May you be surrounded by people who en-courage you in small and large ways.

May your skin grow thicker and your heart more supple.

May you trust your imagination and express yourself with a true and unwavering voice.

May God reward you for all your creative la-bor.

May the struggles you face make you stronger, so that you may persevere and continue on

the path. May you grow in confidence, seeing clearly

your value and worth. May you be appreciated, in your lifetime, for

the gift of healing you offer the world. And may every one of us be moved to partici-pate in God’s re-Creation of this world, and

may what we create be rightly called “good.” Amen

Happy anniversary to me! It is hard to believe, but I started here at PIPC FIVE years ago on October 1, 2014. Time flies when you are having fun! I love Pawleys Island and the peo-ple of PIPC. Your kindness, encouragement, and love have helped to make my first five years a joy. Thank you! Fall is a busy time in the Music Department at PIPC. You should see some new faces and the return of some other faces in the choirs. I am so grateful for all the dedicated mu-sicians who joyfully give their time and talents. Bach said that, “He who sings, prays twice.” Amen

FAMILY FIRST. . . This month we meet some long-time members...the Middletons: Todd, Renee, Todd Jr., Emily, and Maddy. They have been a part of PIPC for 25 years.

Todd & Renee met on a random blind date in Beaufort, SC. Todd says he’s not certain if it was love at first sight or thinking Renee needed an adult role model. While on that first date and stopped at a swing bridge, she ran around the car several times playing Chinese red-light. They will celebrate their 29th anniversary in February.

Todd is property manager at Litchfield Villas, and Renee is an insurance underwriter.

Todd Jr., 25, is a graduate of The College of Charleston and resides and works in Durham, NC. He enjoys soccer and golf.

Emily, 22, graduated last May from Limestone College. She enjoys biking and her friends. She is looking for her first career-oriented job.

Madelyn (Maddy) is a senior at The College of Charleston. She enjoys running, reading, and proudly boasts that she loves to annoy the people she loves!

The family is completed by their two dogs, Sully and Sammy, who were adopted from the local shelter. The Middletons love to travel together. They like short journeys, not exotic venues, packed with activities planned around an amusement destination. You can find them on roller coasters, at giant water parks, white-water rafting, zip-lining, etc., but never a laid-back stay on a beach or lake. Although the children are adults, family vacations are still a priority. They all playfully debate and plan the next destination and activities. At church, the Middletons describe themselves as balcony-dwellers who recognize most members by the tops of their heads. All three children were baptized and confirmed at PIPC. The family’s foundation is on solid ground because of VBS, children’s choir, youth group/retreats, Youth Sundays, scholarship dinners, praise band, skits, fellowship dinners, and all that is PIPC.

Todd Jr.’s faith was fortified because of Sunday School with Mrs. Betty Motsinger and the journey through the King James Version of the Bible. He was the first child in the adult Handbell Choir and even performed with them at Brookgreen Gardens.

Emily and Maddy learned how to be a proper southern Christian under Ms. Julia’s leadership and would never miss Sunday School, especially when they graduated into Mrs. Martha’s Bible study and nutrition seminars. Emily was part of the first PIPC small group who learned that the mission field begins in our own community while working with Salkehatchie. Six days of construction work in sweltering June heat, and late-night fellowship with her fellow campers only fueled the desire for more. Emily and Maddy returned for over 7 years and look forward to the next one. At PIPC, Maddy lived out her dream of singing a solo in church with Melodye Sparks as her loving coach.

When asked why PIPC is their church home, the Middletons say that they didn’t choose PIPC, she chose them. When asking Pastor Frank to baptize Todd Jr., he quickly reminded them that baptism is not just a ceremony, but the church’s commitment to raise a child. They immediately joined! Very quickly they were immersed into the church family and never looked back. According to the kids, being involved in the life of the church was not an option. They often say that in the Middleton family, you do not volunteer to participate at church.... you are volun-TOLD! Funny, they say, no one ever complained because it’s always great fun!

Now you know their story...get up to the balcony and meet them!

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he

is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

The Book Corner

Mark Diehl’s Book and other New Additions PIPC’s Library book display for October includes the following new non-fiction additions: God of Deliverance and Transformation: The Ten Commandments for the Twenty-First Century by Mark E. Diehl The term we use – commandments – is actually translated from the Hebrew text as “words” or “sayings.” God handed down these words to help the Israelites live in relationship with Him and with each other in freedom after centuries of knowing only the oppression of slavery. The intent of these words then and now is to provide a vision of lives transformed so that the community of faith forms a bond noted for its holiness, wholeness, justice, and peace. The Curious Christian by Barnabas Piper Piper says that “curiosity is one of the most significant ways we have to be image bearers of God.” He doesn’t want us to “stay safely where we are and miss the wonders God has for us.” He concludes with practical ways to grow in curiosity with Scripture as “our plumb line, our compass.” Christ’s Call To Reform the Church by John MacArthur This examination of the 7 letters to the churches in Revelation seeks to better understand Jesus’ words to them because they are applicable to the church in the 21st century. It’s time to heed Christ’s call to reform His church. The Wisdom of Faith by Bobby Bowden with Steve Bowden The winningest coach in major college football history tells us that nothing matters if our lives are not rooted in faith. He shares the Bible verses that have shaped his life along with his insights. Crucible by Phil Tuttle with Chris Tiegreen and Walk Thru the Bible Using the “defining moments of King David’s life – the crucible moments that revealed or shaped who he was,” this book explores how God works in us in order to prepare us to be people after His own heart. On Reading Well by Karen Swallow Prior Take a tour of literary works with the author and explore insights about one of the classical virtues in each work. Prior’s goal is to help the reader learn to love life, literature, and God through encounters with great writing. Creature of the Word by Matt Chandler, Josh Patterson, and Eric Geiger The title refers to God’s Word being the source of the church, and specifically that the proclamation of the gospel is the basis of the church’s life, the foundation for its entire ministry. That being the case, the authors provide practical steps toward forming a Jesus-centered church.

REFORMATION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27

On Sunday, October 27th, Reformation Sunday, PIPC will celebrate the Scottish ancestry of the Presbyterian Church, remembering that we are standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. We invite all to wear or display in some way their own family tartans.

Also on that day, in anticipation of All Saint’s Day, November 1st, we will be remembering those family members who left this earthly home in the past year. In addition, there will be a time to honor personal losses in our lives.

Anyone who has tartans, scarves, coats-of-arms, or other symbols of the Scottish heritage and would like to lend it for a visual display that day, please text, call, or email Cecilia Dilworth at 843-340-5614/[email protected]

Please provide the church office with the name(s) of those who died in the last year who were connected to this congregation as a friend or member. While we should have a record of all the deceased, we want to make sure all are included

in the bulletin. Thanks for your help with this.

World Communion Sunday

The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. Paul tells us that we are to “discern the body” when we partake of Holy Communion, mindful that we note our relationship to all our brothers and sisters in Christ in the celebration. (I Cor. 11:21). Sunday, October 6th, is World Communion Sunday. We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper during the worship service. Prepare your hearts.

PIPC CIRCLES

CUBA MISSION TRIP The “Sensational Six” from PIPC will visit our sister church in Camajuani, Cuba October 30 - November 4.

Please keep our Mission Team in your prayers as we bring peace in times of distress to our Christian and non-Christian brothers and sisters in Cuba.

Then He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.”

FINANCE TEAM

The PIPC Finance Team is responsible for the church’s total financial operations which include orchestrating and overseeing the budget development process and running the annual stewardship campaign. In addition, this team, working in conjunction with the church treasurer and bookkeeper, oversees the accounting of all receipts and the execution of all expenditures incurred by PIPC. The church treasurer is always a member of the finance team along with nine other current members. The finance team lead is Jacque Richardson.

Annual budget line items for this team include debt retirement (mortgage payment), Presbytery basic mission support, and bookkeeping and accounting costs among others. The major part of the finance team budget includes the mortgage on the Holsclaw Fellowship Center and the Sanctuary, which total about $7800 per month. All unbudgeted expenditure requests, capital expenditures and any requests for special fundraising events also come before the finance team for review and recommendations prior to being presented to the Session for final review and approval/disapproval.

Stewardship Season is

October 13th—November 10th.

Please prayerfully consider what God would have you do regarding our 2020 Stewardship.
