Part 2 on the 1944 B-29 crash near

    Philip.

    by Mike Wadeand Garth Wade

Arthur Joseph Liberi lay on theSouth Dakota prairie, his para-chute around him.

He had been thrown out of a B-29 bomber cruising at 21,000 feetwhen the engine of another B-29sliced its tail off.

While on the ground Liberiheard a voice: Is he dead?

    Liberi answered: I dont thinkso.

It was Sept. 28, 1944. Eight ofhis 10 fellow crewmen died whenthe two pieces of their SuperFortress crashed, seven trapped inthe front section, one in the severedtail.

Blister gunner William S. Claryparachuted safely. Liberi and Clarycelebrated their good fortune witha hug after ranchers near the tinytown of Philip, S.D., got them to-gether near the fallen bomberstail.

Both would face death severalmore times before World War IIended the following August.

Clary, now 87, lives in Gaffney,S.C.

Ninety-year-old Liberi resides inMount Laurel, N.J.

The Philadelphia native gradu-ated high school in 1940 just intime to go to war. He yearned to bea fighter pilot but was turned downbecause of a minor eye condition.

Later, Uncle Sams draft senthim to schools in Chicago andFlorida so he could operate radaron a B-29.

He was at his post over SouthDakota about 3 p.m. on that muggylate summer day.

I was half asleep, didnt evenhave the radar on, Liberi said. Heremembered putting on his chuteafter the co-pilot suggested it but

only his shoulder straps, not legstraps.

Suddenly there was nothing butair around him and the differencein air pressure between plane andaltitude threw him into the wildblue.

Everything was hitting me inthe head, he said. Next thing, Iwas floating.

It took a while to pull the rip cordbut the sudden jerk when the para-chute deployed almost pulled it offhis body. Liberi crossed his armstightly to stay in harness, he said.

Took a long time to hit theground.Didnt take Liberi long to go back

to war aboard another B-29 basedat Saipan for bombing missionsover Japan.

He was on his 25th mission whenhistory repeated itself. Liberisbomber was rammed by threeJapanese suicide planes, one hitthe engine, the next hit the fuse-lage and the last took out the tail10 miles off the Japanese shore.

Liberi had to work to get out.First he found the strength to bendsome aluminum angle-iron holdinga camera, then struggled to openthe door, resulting in leg injuries.

Again, he found himself danglingfrom a chute with only the shoul-der straps attached. I didnt do thelegs, he said. And this time, hewas not safe once he pulled the ripcord.

The enemy tried to shoot him ashe hung in his parachute and, thankfully, missed.

There was worse terror, he said.I panicked because I dont knowhow to swim. I popped the life vestbefore I hit the water.

Blood from leg wounds attractedsharks but he was able to climbinto his one-man raft in time. Twoother survivors floated nearby intheir rafts.

The enemy really wanted themdead so another plane dropped adepth charge that failed to do its

job, Liberi said.He was one of four of the crew to

    survive. An American submarine, the

Razorback, picked them up andlater transferred the airmen to thesub Dragonet that took them toPearl Harbor.

Clary, the other survivor of thecrash in Sound Dakota was basedon Tinian, three miles from Liberisbase at Saipan. Clary visited his

friend on Saipan right after Liberihad been rescued after his secondcrash.

Art was shaking so bad, hecouldnt light a cigarette, Clarysaid.

Liberis war was over. He wasflown back to Saipan where hestayed from June until Augustwhen the war ended,

He was discharged at San Anto-nio, Texas.Back home, he eventually went towork as a master technician forRCA, fixing radios, TVs and phono-graphs in the Philadelphia NewJersey area. He retired in 1984with 34 years on the job.

Liberi married a lady namedLoretta in 1978. She brought a son, daughter and four grandchildren tothe family.

He says his health is prettygood, thanks to a quadruple heartoperation and carotid artery sur-gery.

He doesnt jump out of airplanesanymore. Crossword puzzles andreading are favorite activities thesedays.

The crash he survived in Japanis chronicled in Chapter 19 ofWilbur H. Morrisons book entitledPoint of No return.

Liberi has a one-word title for hiswar experience: unbelievable.

Three plans are avail-able through gap, critical illnessand accident. Risty said it wouldsave the county and employeesmoney, and hopefully improve ben-efits. To create savings the de-ductible level would be raised to$5,000.

Risty said $15,000 each year andover $200,000 in five years could behad in savings. He then showed aside by side comparison of the cur-rent plan and the plan with thenew one added. CommissionerNick Konst said this was basicallyinsurance for insurance then.Risty, responded, In essence, yes.

Risty stated that if the countyadded his benefit package, hewould also like to take over as theirWellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield

insurance agent also. His reason-ing was that it makes it easier tocommunicate as claim paperworkhas to be filed for each insuranceportion.

Commissioner Rita OConnellsaid she did not like removingGlenn Parsons as their agent. Shewould like to keep him. Risty saidthat was fine, but it makes theprocess harder. Its just cleaner ifyou have one agent, said Risty.

Kenny Neville, highway superin-tendent, updated the board on hisdepartment. Neville noted theyhave been graveling roads. Neville informed the commissionhe will be meeting soon withTrans-Canada representative,Chris Candelaria. The two will re-view approaches into pastures.Neville showed them a copy of an

approach permit that other coun-ties use. Anyone who wants to in-stall an approach has to fill out thepermit which would then be re-viewed by Neville. Up to this pointlandowners have done so verbally.Neville noted some counties chargea fee for the permit. The board ap-proved a resolution instituting thepermit, but there will be no charge.

Neville was approved to attendtwo separate safety meetings in

    April.Dick Rockefellow made his an-

nual request for the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Associationsraffle. He noted that a local groupsells the tickets each year, and theyget to keep half the proceeds. Theboard approved the raffle request.

Nancy Neville, informed theboard that lights in the Philips po-lice officers room are overheating, creating a smoke smell. The boardapproved for her to get two quotesand proceed with the lower one.

jamin Cardin, Maryland, an-nounced on the Senate floor that hewill introduce a resolution that willcommemorate the 200th anniver-sary of the War of 1812, and cele-brate the heroism displayed by

Americans during what is often re-ferred to as the Second War of In-dependence. Two days later onMarch 2, the resolution passedwith a unanimous consent by theUnited States Senate.

This Resolution recognizes thatthe War of 1812 was a criticalevent in our nations early historyand it helped secure our nationsindependence from Great Britain,Senator Cardin said. It also hon-ors Francis Scott Key who duringthe defense of Fort McHenry wroteThe Star-Spangled Banner, whichlater became our national anthem.

HOW GOD EMPOWERS HIS WITNESSESby Cornelius R. Stam

As we know, Paul wrought mighty miracles, as Peter and the Pentecostal believers haddone. Indeed, a comparison of Paul's miracles with those of Peter shows Paul's to have

been the mightier. This was mainly in divine confirmation of his apostleship, since Paul was not one of the twelve (II Cor. 12:11,12).But it is clear from a study of Paul's ministry and his epistles that these miraculous demonstrations were to vanish away as the dis-

pensation of grace was fully ushered in (See I Cor. 13:8; Rom. 8:22,23; II Cor. 4:16-5:4; 12:10; Phil. 3:20,21; I Tim. 5:23; II Tim. 4:20).In fact, in the last s even of Paul's epistles nothing whatever is said about signs, miracles, healings, tongues, visions or the casting outof demons.

How, then, does God now empower His servants in their conflict with Satan and his demons? The answer is: by the Holy Spiritthrough His Word, as it is preached with conviction. There is a great volume of evidence as to this in Paul's epistles, including his earlyepistles. Two examples: I Cor. 2:4: "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing [persuasive] words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power."

Mark well, this was power in his preaching, not in performing miracles. Indeed at the very same time when he proclaimed his God-given message with such power, he himself was very weak, for in the preceding verse he says: "And I was with you in weakness, andin fear, and in much trembling."

The other example is I Thes. 1:5: "For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, andin much assurance..."

In Thessalonica too, Paul had suffered much opposition and persecution, until the whole city was in an uproar (Acts 17:1-5), andthis may well have been the result of his powerful preaching. Out of the "uproar," however, sprang the beloved Thessalonian church,an example and inspiration to those won to Christ under more benign circumstances. To the Reader:

Some of our Two Minutes articles were written many years ago by Pastor C. R. Stam for publication in newspapers. When many of these articles were latercompiled in book form, Pastor Stam wrote this word of explanation in the Preface:

"It should be borne in mind that the newspaper column, Two Minutes With the Bible, has now been published for many years, so that l ocal, national and

international events are discussed as if they occurred only recently. Rather than rewrite or date such articles, we have left them just as they were when firstpublished. This, we felt, would add to the interest, especially since our readers understand that they first appeared as newspaper articles."We hope that you'll agree that while some of t he references in these articles are d ated, the spiritual truths taught therein are timeless.

    class with lots of energy.

At Northern State University, Aberdeen, students learn insideand outside of the classroom. Thatincludes learning on-the-job skills

through internships at local busi-nesses such as Eide Bailly LLP.

NSU student Jordan Smith isundergoing learning experiencesduring his internship at EideBailly. Eide Bailly is a top 25 Cer-tified Public Accountant firm head-quartered in Fargo, N.D., withlocations in nine states, includingone in Aberdeen, S.D.

Smith is a Philip native majoringin finance and professional ac-counting. He is the son of Ray andDonna Smith. Smith said helearned about available internshipopportunities through a website setup by a professor and emails fromvarious professors. His time atEide Bailly has given him real-lifeexperience in a comfortable learn-ing environment.

We are fortunate to have thisgreat relationship with EideBailly, said Scott Peterson, North-

erns director of business intern-ships. The NSU School of BusinessCareer Center supports the intern-

ship program through regular on-campus recruitment activities andother efforts. Our objective withthe internship program is to bridgethat space between academics andthe work world, Peterson said.We try to help these students

lever up to that first full-time job.The internship program is a majorpart of that process.

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the earth's axis isinclined neither away from nor to-wards the sun, the center of thesun being in the same plane as theearth's equator.

The equinox isn't until March 20,at 5:15 a.m. but on the 8th over atthe Kadoka Clinic they were busyletting a broom stand in the middleof the bathroom unaided. When Ichecked with Vivian Hansen, shesaid that was a surprise since thenormal equinox is the first day ofspring.

We have to have the only mousethat won't catch a cold. Signs ofmice were showing up in unusualplaces. Under the sink in the bath-

room we discovered where all thecough drops had been eaten. Wewonder if the cat brought just onein and was playing with it when hehad a senior moment and themouse escaped. Anyway, I caughtone, still have the trap set, just incase.

Larry Colburn, Sharon Falzone'shusband, in Elk, Wash., called tochat this week. The reading of thePioneer Review brought back fondmemories of some of the experi-ences he'd had and he wanted tovisit about it. Always good to get anice call from Larry.

Cousin Dick Sherwood, Ed-monds, Wash., called this week tocheck on how things were in sunnyKadoka. They have had rain andsnow there. Sort of their usualdrippy winter. He and wife Jeanare doing well and planning sometrips after some selective surgery.

That is a good sign. Dick has fondmemories of summers spent in thePhilip area visiting at the BobBlair home and with us.

Monday, Tony Harty had tocatch up with me to give his newsfor the week. In the evening, he vis-ited his niece, Kathy Brown, tocatch up on the weekend ofwrestling.

I visited Emma Jarl and MaryEllen Herbaugh at the KadokaCare Center Monday afternoon be-

fore bowling. I was surprised to seethat the two big tanks that wereexpected early into Kadoka were

just arriving about 5:30 p.m. How-ever, I found out the reason for thedelay was because of road blocks inWanblee. Bill was in Philip forcards in the afternoon and watchedbowling in the evening while hav-ing supper.

Tuesday, Phyllis Word was a vis-itor at our place in the morning andRon Larson also stopped by to workon our tower computer. The towerdisappeared to Philip for a tune-upat Ron's shop. In the afternoon, Iattended the memorial services forformer neighbor Dorothy Pearson. So many from the Elbon commu-

nity were on hand for the serviceand lunch following.

Don and Vi Moody have been ona little mini-vacation this week atRapid City before calving starts. They had quite a bit of business (alittle monkey business), but lots ofappointments. Don had an appoint-ment Tuesday for a checkup afterhis operation and all seems to behealing nicely.

Wednesday, Tony Harty visitedat the home of Steven Doughty andLisa Robinson here in Kadoka.

Wednesday morning, Ralph andCathy Fiedler drove to Whitewoodto meet Lynette Klumb and Han-nah. Hannah came and spent twodays with grandma and grandpabecause Spearfish had springbreak. Cathy had to work Thurs-day, so Hanna and grandpa spentthe day together. When he went towork he dropped her off at the

nursing home until Cathy wasready to go home.

Wednesday, Vi Moody was pre-pared to get her drivers license re-newed, she thought. After gettingher number and finally getting heraudience before the credential cer-tifier, she proudly tossed out herold drivers license, her original so-cial security card, her birth certifi-cate and two bills with her, and
