An AMAZING JOURNEYYour commitment to excellence has paved the road to successWhat an amazing journey we have

all enjoyed as part of the Pioneer

Energy family.

We have shared victories, overcome obstacles and celebrated our individual and collective successes through almost six decades of becoming Canada’s leading private independent fuel marketer and convenience retailer. That journey will continue in 2015 under new ownership, expanding our Pioneer Energy ‘family’ into a national organization committed to its customers, employees and the communities it serves. Although this change means I will miss each and every one of you in the personal contact with day-to-day operations at Pioneer Energy, I will continue on this journey with you as President and CEO of The Pioneer Group Inc. and as a Director with Parkland Fuel Corporation.

Þ>ÃÌvwV>iÃÃ>}i/i ÝV>}i>ÃChairman and CEO of Pioneer Energy, I want to say thank you for your incredible support, dedication and commitment to making this the truly great company it is today!

I also want to thank you for putting your faith and trust in me personally when I became President of Pioneer in 1998. Together we have taken Murray’s dream and made it bigger and bolder – so bold in fact that it attracted the attention

of Parkland Fuel Corporation, Canada’s largest independent fuels marketer.Parkland recognized excellence in Pioneer Energy and its people, an excellence that each of you as an integral part of our great Pioneer Team – from administrators and attendants to Retailers and Managers – make happen every day. An excellence that has also achieved the coveted Platinum status for the past nine years in Canada’s 50 Best Private Managed Companies program.

What is clear from all of this is that we have an extraordinary team of people and an exceptional winning culture of achieving the very best we can be.

We do it passionately, deliberately and all the while having a ÌÌivÕ°>Vw`iÌÌ>Ì>Ã«>ÀÌvÌi*>À>`v>Þthat excellence will continue to thrive. Along the way there will be changes and challenges, as well as fresh opportunities that could never have existed under our current ownership structure. I wish each of you continuing success and happiness as Pioneer Energy becomes a dynamic and outstanding brand within the Parkland family. And I can tell you that this was certainly Murray’s wish!

A Canadian champion.

That’s how Parkland CEO Bob Espey describes Parkland Fuel Corporation with the addition of Pioneer Energy to the family. Parkland’s acquisition of Pioneer Energy is currently moving through the approvals process, with closing expected before the end of the year.“This represents a great opportunity, as the industry consolidates, to be a strong force within the Canadian fuel marketplace,” Bob said at a ‘town hall’ meeting to announce the acquisition in September. “It is an historic event in Canadian fuel marketing.”Bob noted that the combined companies will deliver more than 10 billion litres of fuels through a network that includes almost 1,100 retail gas locations across the country.Bob joined Pioneer Energy President and CEO Tim Hogarth, along with the company’s respective management teams, to discuss what the acquisition would mean to the two companies once they come together.“Rest assured that Pioneer will be Pioneer after the acquisition closes,” Tim told Pioneer Energy employees. º/i*iiÀi>`vwViÜÀi>where it is with the same team of people who have made it the most respected private independent gasoline/convenience retailer in Ontario.”During the approvals process, the companies are continuing to operate independently of one another.Tim said Pioneer was approached by Parkland in 2013 as the company

sought a way to enter the Ontario marketplace in a meaningful way. “Before we would discuss this opportunity, our management team laid out certain ground rules,” said Tim, noting he personally wanted assurances that Parkland would be committed to Pioneer employees. He said he also wanted assurances that the Pioneer Energy brand would be respected, retained and further developed, and that all Pioneer Retailer and Dealer contracts would be retained without changes that could damage relationships.“I am honoured to join forces with a company like Parkland, which shares many of the values that have made Pioneer what it is today,” Tim told the town hall meeting.

Who is Parkland

Fuel Corporation?

Pioneer Energy President Tim Hogarth says he and company founder Murray Hogarth were quite familiar with Parkland Fuel Corporation long before they were approached by the company last year. “In fact, my father and I knew Parkland founder Jack Donald quite well, and kept an eye on the company’s growth and `ÛiÀÃwV>ÌÀi>ÌÌwhat we were doing at Pioneer,” says Tim. “At a certain point, Parkland’s growth accelerated rapidly and the company became much larger than Pioneer.”

Following is snapshot of Parkland:

• The company was founded in Red Deer, Alberta in 1975 by Jack Donald and his wife Joan.

• Parkland Fuel Corporation is a publicly traded company: TSX:PKI

• Business growth has come through acquisitions – Parkland has welcomed more than 1,000 employees from 20 companies over the past 10 years.

• Parkland delivers consumer fuels through FasGas Plus, Esso, Chevron and RaceTrac as well as other limited brands.

• Parkland has more than 100 wholesale fuels customers serviced from 121 commercial locations.

Harvey Dyck, right, Pioneer Energy Senior VP Finance joins Parkland employees Ray Lapensée, Director, Business Development, and Ronda Dwyer, Director, Corporate Development. The three worked through many of the details between the two companies leading up to the acquisition agreement.

“Values like entrepreneurship, integrity, commitment to people and philanthropy.”Tim said the timing of the offer was good because it would help resolve some key issues facing the Pioneer management team, while ensuring “the legacy begun by my father almost 60 years ago would continue well into the future.”Pioneer Energy Retailers and Dealers ÜLiiwÌ}Ài>ÌÞÌiÀÃv>ÃÃÕÀi`long-term supply, while employees will see expanded opportunities for

career growth, Tim said, noting he will be stepping aside as President and CEO of Pioneer Energy once the acquisition closes.“I will still be very much part of the journey. The Pioneer Group will be the single largest shareholder in Parkland, and my name is being put forward for appointment to the Board of Directors.”More details will be provided as the approvals process moves toward completion, Tim added.

Kelly Nelson is all smiles

for good reason.

She and her team have had a record year, signing on 18 new branded wholesale and 15 consignment dealer locations (some already open, others for future development) that will add about 150 million litres to Pioneer Energy’s total fuels distribution over the next year.“Our team is amazing, with everyone working together to make great things happen,” says Kelly, Director of Sales Operations. “We changed our approach in 2013 with a view to network planning, identifying areas where we have been under-represented. Once we had that information, we launched a sales blitz in a very planned and structured way.”

Kelly notes that she and Brian Kitchen (Vice President Dealer and Reseller Sales) were pleased when Darren McLachlan, a 20-plus year Regional Business Manager, accepted the position of Regional Sales Manager – Consignment Specialist. “Having a dedicated person like Darren meant the team could focus on consignment opportunities as well as branded wholesale.”The results have been outstanding, adds Kelly, noting the team has brought on twice as many dealers this year over the year before. The sales team includes two Regional Sales Managers (RSM) in Manitoba (Mike Schmidt and Kirk Melville) as Üi>ÃwÛi,-Ã"Ì>À/``Hickman, Jim Cook, Rob Ouimet, Bill McBride and Darren).

More importantly, notes Kelly, she and the RSMs work closely with Dealers to ensure continuing success. “Our Dealers like the fact that we treat them like part of the family. We respect and support the fact that they have a huge personal investment in their sites.”Kelly, a former District Sales Manager before taking on her current role in 2013, says she is amazed at the business acumen of wholesale branded and consignment dealers. “These people are very entrepreneurial, and very committed to their businesses. Once they get the taste of success with our systems and support, they are ready to become multi-site operators.”

“I am honoured to join forces with a company like

Parkland, which shares many of the values that have

made Pioneer what it is today” -Tim Hogarth

“ONE HELL OF A RIDE”Andy’s retirement caps almost 50 years of great memories

Pumping gas at 38 cents a gallon. Selling tobacco and soda pop. Running a car wash that was often lined up bumper to bumper around the block. And of course, endless price wars.

Ã>ÃÌwÛi`iV>`iÃat Pioneer, Andy Landry has

experienced it all.

During that time he’s also had his doubts. He didn’t think self-serve pumps would catch on. And he sure didn’t know that Pioneer would become one of Canada’s leading convenience retailers. “It’s been one hell of ride,” says Andy, whose long-time reign as one of the most popular Regional Business Managers in the company came to a close with his retirement at the end of September. “Without a doubt I’d do it all over again. The people have made it very special.”

The journey began in 1966 when Andy landed a part-time job pumping gas at a Pioneer station at Main and Ferguson Streets in Hamilton (it’s now a city parking lot). In those days gas stations within city limits had to close by 7 p.m. so the hours were limited.čvÌiÀwÃ}}ÃV]č`Þtook a summer off before accepting a full-time job as assistant manager of the Pioneer station on Upper Gage Avenue in Hamilton.“Of course it was all full serve in those days, and I’m talking full-circle service,” recalls Andy. “That meant you had to check the oil, wash the front and back windshields and offer the customer discount stamps.”

“Meet “Andy McTavish”, a wee

proud (her family is from Scotland).

But things got really busy shortly after he moved to the Upper James Pioneer. “Murray (Hogarth) came up with the idea of giving people a free V>ÀÜ>ÃÜÌ>ÞwÕ«]>`Ì}Ãjust went crazy. I can remember doing 1,500 cars a day.“Just when he thought things couldn’t get much busier, Pioneer became the wÀÃÌ}>ÃÃÌ>Ì«iÀ>ÌÀ>Ìto offer tobacco sales. Then came the introduction of the Pop Shoppe and Rent-a-Bug. “A lot of guys couldn’t handle how busy the job was, so there was a lot of turnover.” But Andy stuck to it and after managing a variety of locations, he was eventually promoted into the ÀivÃÕ«iÀÛÃÀ°ÃwÀÃÌvwViÜ>Ãat the familiar surroundings of Upper James Street. “Of course in those days we didn’t have cell phones, so you’d have to plan your day, and phone ahead,” says Andy. That role plunged him into the heat of price wars throughout the various territories he has managed throughout the years. “Brantford has always been notorious for price wars. There was a time we were changing prices 25 times a day. The pumps were mechanical in those days so you had to go out and change each pump by hand. That was pretty nasty in the winter.”Although the job title has evolved along with the business, Andy’s been in a supervisory role for more years than he can remember. It’s a role he has always enjoyed, and his friendly, easy-going but no-nonsense personality has made him a hit with Retailers over the years.

Just ask Ibrahim Slewa and Sam Alkhatib. Both Retailers switched locations just so they could stay with Andy when his territory shifted.“I’ve known Andy since I started with Pioneer in 1992,” says Ibrahim, Retailer at the Fennell Ave. E. Pioneer in Hamilton. “I worked under Andy when I managed two sites on Highway 6 in Flamborough. Andy’s territory changed, and I wanted to stay with him so I moved to King and Dundurn in Hamilton.“People thought I was crazy to give up two sites, but it was worth it to stay with Andy.”Sam Alkhatib echoes Ibrahim’s sentiments. “I am at this store because of Andy,” says Sam, who has operated a busy Highway 6 location in Flamborough since last March.”How does he garner such loyalty? Andy is modest in his reply.“I always listen to my retailers; if they have a problem I want to know. If I can help I will. If I think they’re wrong, or there’s a better solution, I tell them that too. Bottom line – people want to make money. If they aren’t making money they aren’t happy. I understand that.”Andy hasn’t made any big plans for retirement yet. “My wife, Marie, retired in October. I’m sure we’ll have no trouble keeping busy.” If you’re looking for him next spring, you might want to check area golf courses.

Ontario Hockey League fans have discovered a new way to win this season thanks to a partnership with Pioneer Energy.

More than 36,000 season’s ticket holders at 15 OHL clubs have received co-branded Pioneer Bonus Buck membership cards that automatically enter them into local swipe-and-win promotions throughout the hockey schedule.

AND THAT’S ON TOP OF THE REGULAR BONUS BUCKS VALUES.

“This is a grassroots partnership that enables Pioneer to reach out into communities across the province,” says Anthony DiMaulo, Pioneer Energy’s VP, Marketing, Merchandising & Loyalty. “The program is tailored to meet the needs of individual clubs and communities, which makes it very unique.”

Kevin Boston, the OHL’s Director of Marketing and Business Development, says the program also provides Pioneer Energy with a presence in each arena, with rink-board or on-ice logos.

“This is a classic win-win-win sponsorship that

has something in it for everyone,” says Kevin, noting OHL clubs are very pleased to have their team events promoted at Pioneer sites across the province. “This is the most successful type of partnership you can get into, and I’m Vw`iÌÌÜLivÀÌi}ÌiÀ°»

Season’s Ticket Holders have a chance to win prizes at the local level all year year long, and are automatically entered to win free gas for year, an exclusive VIP fan experience as well as merchandise from their favourite team.

Anthony says the program gives Pioneer a chance to communicate with fans on a regular basis. “We can reach out to fans at each team with regular promotions. It’s great value for the fans, and gives them more reasons to stop at Pioneer.”

FA C T S• Partnership is with 15 teams

including Barrie, Belleville, Guelph, Kingston, Kitchener, London, Mississauga, Niagara, Oshawa, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Peterborough, Sarnia, Sudbury and Windsor.

• The League drew 3.1 million fans last season, compared to 633,000 for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

• OHL attendees are 63 percent male, with 39 percent aged 19-34 and 41 percent aged 35-54.

• Several OHL Alumnus have gone on to successful NHL careers including Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Drew Doughty, Corey Perry, P.K. Subban, Steven Stamkos and John Tavares.

• The OHL is the No. 1 NHL development league, with more than 197 former OHL players on opening day rosters this season.

• The OHL is one of the largest providers of scholarships in Canada with over $1.75 million dollars being fed into the education system for over 230 OHL current and graduate players from the OHL.

• For each year played in the League, the CHL provides a year’s worth of tuition paid to a post secondary establishment in Canada or the U.S.

During the promotion, anyone buying a case of Eska drinking water was automatically entered if they swiped their Bonus Bucks card when making the purchase.“I’ve been a Bonus Bucks member for years now, but I never imagined winning anything like that,” says the Union Gas employee. He and his wife Jeanette are planning to celebrate their 20th Anniversary cruising to destinations like Italy, Greece and more.

Darren and

Hamilton on their

Darren’s a regular at the Burlington Pioneer Verve location at Mainway and Appleby Line because it’s close to where he works. Jeanette says she and Darren have been researching a world of possibilities for the trip to Anywhere in the World. “There’s so much history in that part of the world, I would love to see all the ruins.”It’ll be a trip of a lifetime for the couple, who say they haven’t done a lot of travelling. “We’ve been to Texas and Vegas, but this will be a trip we’ll never forget.”

Bobby says they both like Belleville because it’s the ideal size for a city – not too big and not too small. He says he recognizes his regular customers, but is also used to the number of cottagers

and out-of-towners who come through on their way to Prince Edward County, Napanee and the Thousand Islands. For now, the Bhopals continue to commute from Brampton roughly four

days a week. Sometimes they make the trip together; other days they make it >i°7ÌÌii«v>Ìi>vwÛilocal employees though, they keep the station up and running 24 hours a day.

that ground was frozen solid.

Because he was building from the ground up, the Pioneer consignment dealer says the winter of 2013 delayed the start-up of his new business. But since he opened in August it has been smooth sailing. Bobby’s history with Pioneer goes back to 2006 when he ran a station in Barrie, so he knows how the company operates and had always liked the consignment model. Because Pardeep had that existing relationship, and because he owned the land where the station now stands (he also paid to bring water and sewer services to the 2,600-square-foot building he erected), Regional Business Manager Rick Bairstow said it was easy for Pioneer to team up with Bobby. “He’s a pretty astute guy,” says Rick. “He’s a sharp fellow and understands the

business, his customers and the relationships with employees and the community.”Kelly Nelson, Director of Sales Operations, adds that the location is spectacular. “Bobby did an amazing job in designing this site. The store is huge and bright, and he has even included facilities for staff with a kitchen, change-rooms and even showers. He’s a great operator, and I’m sure we’ll see him with additional sites down the road.”Rick says Bobby’s plan included six pumps, a coffee counter and an onsite touch-free car wash – one that, with a six-colour clean, doubles the polishing power of the tri-colour foam clean. Bobby was also excited to offer his customers Bonus Bucks. He says that’s one of the things that draws customers to his location at 808 Bell Blvd, which is strategically located close to a Highway 401 interchange.

Bobby says he likes the consignment relationship for a couple of reasons. Pioneer owns and manages the fuels in the ground, giving him a set percentage on what he sells. With that worry out of the way, he is able to focus on customers, employees and his convenience store. “When there is something wrong in the market, where the market is volatile at least, you have protection that way,” he adds. It’s something that puts Bobby and his wife and business partner Surinder at ease. They have three children, two in university, so the guarantee is reassuring. They’re also thinking of moving from their Brampton home to Belleville so they don’t have to drive two hours each way every day.

Right: Bobby Bhopal has taken full advantage of Pioneer merchandising for his consignment location in a fast-growing area of Belleville.
