Local Artists Bring Hidden Valley to Light. Hidden Valley Revealed: a Juried Art Exhibition opened September 16, 2017 and remained at Homer Watson House & Gallery until October 22, 2017. Forty-one artists’ works were on display. The theme for the show was Hidden Valley, our Region’s emerald gem. Except for Field Naturalists and Grand Valley Trail members, few residents know about this special place called “Hidden Valley“. What better way to bring attention to this unique hidden place of nature than to depict Hidden Valley with the artist’s brush resulting in a masterful art show.
What makes Hidden Valley special? Hidden Valley’s natural history dates back 10,000 years or more to glacial times evidenced by a long narrow gravel ridge or esker. Hidden Valley stores 25% of our drinking water. Kettle lakes today known as provincially significant wetlands are plentiful in Hidden Valley. Forests contain both old growth trees and carolinian trees. Hardwood stands of oaks, beeches, cherry, maple and butternut clean carbon out of the air. Endangered species such as the jefferson salamander live here. Fifty-nine different types of birds including the bald eagle, Canada warbler, nighthawk, eastern wood peewee, chimney swifts, willow flycatcher and bitterns make Hidden Valley their home.
Regional plants such as wood sedge and fringed gentian are a rarity and are found here.
Hidden Valley has been vulnerable to attacks from potential road development. In the early 1980’s, City and Regional Councillors determined a cross-city road was necessary. It would travel through the centre of Hidden Valley to join Bleams Road with the River Road extension. For years, this road concept slumbered until in 2005 when the plan re-ignited. At this time, Friends of Hidden Valley formed to advocate a new transportation route and preserve Hidden Valley in its entirety. After 10 years of council meetings and challenging engineering studies, the Friends were able to sway Council to have the designed travel route move out of Hidden Valley and skirt the outside edge of it. Provincial and Regional regulations were passed at both political levels to protect nature’s specialties from road development, consequently, the road alignment had to be moved out of Hidden Valley. What is left over are old land plans along the route. These too may in future impact woodlands and open space. Without our vigilance, Hidden Valley’s nature can be easily destroyed if we do not value and speak up for it. Here is an example: recently, as the result of corn planting, the fringed gentian was wiped out as well as the habitat for the special bird species, willow flycatcher. No more will we see the small iridescent blue fringed gentian nor hear the ‘wit-fitz-bew’ of the willow flycatcher. To have Hidden Valley protected from development of any kind, all of us including City Council and the Region of Waterloo Council need to step up and designate Hidden Valley’s 200 acres as open space. Promoter of saving Hidden Valley and the formation of Friends of Hidden Valley was the late Daphne Nicholls who lived on Edgehill Drive, our neighbouring area. It was her dream to have a juried art show to demonstrate Hidden Valley's special charm. Jean Haalboom

2017 DPPCA Christmas Miracle Food Hamper Project
The volunteers are busy getting ready to make 2017 Christmas Miracle Food Hamper Deliveries to 50+ families in our community. We are thankful for the continued support received from area schools, churches, businesses and individuals over the past 30+ years. You make this project possible! Did you know? Financial Donations of $175.00 pays for all of the groceries in a Christmas food hamper for a single mom and 2 children under 7 years old. This gives mom extra money to spend for Christmas. The City of Kitchener will issue income tax receipts for any donations over $20.00. Donations can be made at the Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre during office hours. Please make cheques payable to the City of Kitchener. Non-Perishable Food Donations are always appreciated. Needed items include: canned products such as soup, vegetables, fruit, stew, unsweetened and low salt fruit or vegetable juices, and spaghetti sauce; boxes of whole grain and low-sugar cereal, crackers, and jars of peanut butter. Non-perishable food donations can be dropped off at the community centre, area schools, churches, and other participating neighbourhood businesses before December 13th. Donations of New Warm Knitted Mitts for Children are also accepted (most needed for ages 4-14). Mitts can be dropped off at the donation box located at the Pioneer Park Public Library until Wednesday December 13th. Donating $2 to the Twoonies for Tins Campaign helps pay for the perishable food items that are included in each hamper. This project is easy to organize for your club, class or family. Volunteers for the 2017 Christmas Miracle Food Hamper Project can sign-up at the community centre office before Friday December 8th. Registration is limited. Volunteers are needed to help sort donations on Thursday December 14th and pack/deliver hampers on Saturday December 16th. If you need a Christmas Food Hamper for your family please contact the House of Friendship at 519-742-8327 (51 Charles Street, Kitchener). If your group would like a presentation on how to sponsor a family or run a fundraising event or campaign, please call the community centre 519-741-2641. It will be greatly appreciated!

Make Fun Happen - Volunteer for Winter Rinks
Hello Neighbours,
On Thursday, September 21 I had the opportunity to tour Ward 4 with our new Chief Administrative Officer Dan Chapman.
Let me briefly introduce you to him. He has been with the City for 12 years. Seven years ago he became our Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, responsible for Finance and Corporate Services which includes Legal, Finance, Clerks, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Supply services.
Dan is married with four children. In addition, their busy household has a dog and two cats. In his spare time, Dan likes to putter around their century home.
His earliest experience with municipal work was as a student which included horticulture, lifeguarding and working with an Engineering survey crew. This motivated him into a career of public service.
During our tour, I was able to show Dan some of the exciting happenings and challenges within the ward. We began with a meeting at the Community Center to view the design drawings of the recently approved expansion of the center. It’s exciting to consider this future transformation and its potential, and satisfying to see how the new building will meet the needs shared with us by the community.
Next we took an interesting walk with staff along the trail behind Old Carriage Dr. This trail is one of the prettiest in the area, but has suffered much with flooding and needs thoughtful remediation. We concluded that it would be challenging and expensive to bring this trail up to the standards required for our multiuse trail system. A wiser option would be to make it a hiking trail and reduce the expectation of it being maintained as a mixed use trail. There will be further discussion on how we will try to maintain.
We followed up with a tour of the college area where a new townhome development has started. Dan was able to see some of the challenges around the student housing. We drove around the Dodge Dr. area, the Ormston development and then Wards Pond.
Our final stop was the snow disposal site at Battler and Huron Roads. Although it looks like a parking lot that has no use, we learned that snow can actually stay on the site until July. We were shown the system that keeps the run off from going into the storm water pond and Strasburg Creek. It was encouraging to see how it works to protect the creek from additional salt run off. I believe that the tour was a positive experience for Dan and I as I showcased Ward 4.
Join me at my Meet Your Councillor night at the community centre on Wed., Feb. 2 with community liaison, Sarah Anderson.
Sincerely,
Councillor Yvonne Fernandes―Ward 4
