You still have time to take a break before the official school opening. For those of you, however, who are already preparing and looking ahead to September, we send this newsletter with helpful information. I once saw an advertisement for a book for parents; it read: What job runs 24 hours a day, 375 days a year, offers no vacation or retirement plan and yields rewards beyond those of any other job? Parenting. From the terrible twos to the tricky teens and beyond, parenting is a stretch of tough, spiritually-wearing work… All you need is strong faith to guide you, strong morals to impart to your children, and the strength of your convictions to maintain discipline in your home. When I finished reading the above, I smiled and thought of all of you who do not have the time to write that book of advice, but who probably have plenty of stories to tell and advice to go with them. Many of our Paul VI parents are already veterans in raising teenagers. Others of you are in the high school teenage years for the first time. But no matter how old your children are, you do need the guidance of your Catholic faith as a strong moral compass. When you oversee the packing of the backpacks for the first time this September, help them pack some intangibles that once learned will last a life time responsibility, a work ethic, commitment, respect for and tolerance of others, and a positive attitude. We reinforce those intangibles at Paul VI and have always expected the students to be responsible for their own actions and to study hard. Although they enjoy earning money now, at this point in their lives, only you can help reinforce the idea that their first obligation is to study… not to work forty hours and hope that they learn in the thirty hours that they are here. Many teenagers really need your help with time management especially as their social life increases or their hours at work increase. If too much time is spent on the job, or 24/7 texting, or watching television, or playing video games, then their academic commitment suffers or is non-existent. Help your teenagers to set priorities and to determine exactly which activities are most important. We, the Paul VI faculty and staff, are here to work together with you in the awesome job you have undertaken. For all of us, that strong faith guiding us is essential and should be one of the reasons we chose a Catholic high school. Let us pledge our support of our children in partnership with each other to provide the best education possible. Communication will be key for all of us in providing that education. For our part, we are always able to be reached; so, before any problem, large or small, grows out of proportion, let us hear from you. My e-mail address is in this newsletter; the teachers all have an e-mail address. Finally, we are committed to you and stand ready to help you in all ways with your teenage son or daughter. Dear Parents,

Do not panic…even though this newsletter reminds you that another school year is about to begin. You still have time to take a break before the official school opening. For those of you, however, who are already preparing and looking ahead to September, we send this newsletter with helpful information.

I once saw an advertisement for a book for parents; it read:

What job runs 24 hours a day, 375 days a year, offers no vacation or retirement plan and yields rewards beyond those of any other job?

When you oversee the packing of the backpacks for the first time this September, help them pack some intangibles that once learned will last a life time – responsibility, a work ethic, commitment, respect for and tolerance of others, and a positive attitude. We reinforce those intangibles at Paul VI and have always expected the students to be responsible for their own actions and to study hard. Validating the Vision—June 2013 VTV is the Middle States process the school uses to set goals and to formally evaluate how well we are doing as a school. A Planning Team, comprised of administrators, faculty, trustees, alumni, parents and students was formed and established objectives over five and a half years ago. Action plans to carry out objectives and calculate how well the objectives are working were created. Objec-

tives and plans can be found on www.pvihs.org.

Highlights from the June meeting:

Objective #1 - evidence that all departments work on improving PSAT and AP scores. Math

and English departments regularly work with the New England Prep program to improve PSAT test taking abilities.

Objective #2 - statistics showed incidents of violations regarding honesty, respect and respon-

sibility were down. Also the evolution of the Sebastian Club which will initially spearhead an outreach team to promote Catholic/Christian values on the athletic playing field.

Objective #3 - reported the senior average of 78% on the Faith Knowledge ACRE test (goal is

75%) and the projected updated of text materials for all levels in the Religion department by the 2015-2016 school year.

The student body commemorated our VTV successes on June 7th. A special day of fun activities was organized and run by Student Council. The day began with a celebration of liturgy. Students were then free to attend the special events; watch a movie in the auditorium, compete in games in the gym, and share food and sing Karoake in the cafeteria. Mr. Softee also played a role in the celebration.

Parking Lot Guidelines

We ask everyone to abide by the following parking lot guidelines for the safety and wellbeing of all students.

When entering the school parking lot:

Do NOT pick up or drop off students in lane one (lane closest to the school), which is the bus lane.

When picking up or dropping off students use lanes 2 or 3, or find a parking spot. Do not stop your car in the middle of the lane. You may drive to the far corner of the lot (where the tennis courts are located) to park your car.

Stay with the flow of traffic – make a left to enter park-ing lot and make a left to exit. All lanes are one way going the same direction, in order to safely direct traffic into and out of the parking lot.

Student Parking:

All students that drive and park in the Paul VI lot are required to purchase a parking permit. Parking per-mits are $25.00 for seniors and $35.00 for juniors. Seniors will received parking registration in homeroom on the 1st day of school. Registration for junior park-ing passes will be announced in homeroom when available.

Students are not allowed to park in the lane closest to the church.

School Uniforms

As the new school year begins, students are to enter the build-ing in full uniform each day. School shoes must be worn into the building and are not to be kept in your locker. Gentlemen: Your uniform shirt must be on and tucked in upon entering the building and your hair must be cut so your eyes are visible and the back of the hair should not touch the collar. Hats are never to be worn in the building. Ladies: There are to be NO holes in your tights and your skirts must be unrolled and of appropriate length which is at least two inches below your fingertips. All electronics; iPods, cameras, cell phones, ear buds are to be in your bags upon entering the building. These items will be confiscated if seen when entering the building. Uniform violations will be given for these infractions. Skirt viola-tions will receive 5 demerits and a one hour detention.

Welcome “Class of 2017”

Freshmen and their Parents The PTO welcomes incoming freshmen and their families to Paul VI, and invites them to the varsity football game on Fri-

day, September 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Freshmen and their families are invited to the cafeteria at halftime for hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks courtesy of the PTO. For tickets to the game, refreshments and giveaways, please e-mail Mary Kay August at [email protected]. Please include the following information in your e-mail: 1) Number of persons attending, and 2) Name of freshman.

Please respond by Friday, September 6th. All are welcome on the evening of the event, however if the tickets are not ordered in advance an admission fee

will be collected. If you have any questions, please call Mary Kay at 856-218-1851. We look forward to seeing you at this great event!

Freshman Orientation The beginning of high school is an exciting time and plans are in place to make your freshman year at Paul VI High School truly memorable. This year, Freshman Orientation will be on Friday, September 6th. You will arrive by bus at 8:00 a.m. just like a normal school day. Dress code is casual which means jeans, t-shirts (once you are assigned a home-room, your homeroom will be assigned a color t-shirt to wear) and sneakers. No shorts are to be worn.

You will spend the day in small groups enjoying fun activities, touring the building, meeting your peers, and learning the words and melody of our “Alma Mater.” This is a great op-portunity to meet many new friends and classmates.

The day will end with a barbeque lunch and DJ music. Dis-missal will be at 12:00 p.m. and buses will be available. More information will be available as the day approaches.

The Paul VI community welcomes the “Class of 2017” as you begin to build your legacy here at PVI.

My Freshman Experience

by Rachel Robb “Class of 2016”

The summer before freshman year is one of anticipation,

nerves, preparation, and excitement. You may be nerv-

ous about whether you will make friends or not, if you

will succeed in your classes, afraid that you will get lost,

or worried that you will not enjoy your next four years at

the school you chose. However, you will also feel im-

mense anticipation to finally be in high school. You will

look forward to attending high school football games,

dances, and even just daily school. High school offers

much more freedom than middle school, but with free-

dom comes responsibility. Although the next four years

will be challenging they will prepare you for the rest of

your life, as well as allow you to create memories and

friends that will last.

At Paul VI, the first day of school is much less scary

than you would expect. The first day of school is picture

day, and only the freshmen and sophomores attend. You

are told your homeroom and get to start meeting your

new classmates, which is a lot of fun. The second day of

school is Freshman Orientation, where you learn all

about your new classes, rules, and privileges. It is a day

of fun where you continue to meet new classmates and

make new friends. The first day of actual classes is really

exciting, because you get to meet all of your teachers

and see who is in your classes. Although you may be

nervous about being the youngest grade in school, and

although the upperclassmen claim to hate freshmen, it is

all a joke. Our school is super close knit, and even

though the different grades compete with each other, at

the end of the day we are all one school, a school which

has students who stick up for each other and make

memories together.

My freshman year was a whole lot of fun. I love Paul VI,

and I can't wait to be in this school for the next three

years. Whether you are an athlete, dancer, actor, or club

member, there is a group for you. Everybody will make

at least one friend this school year, and make countless

memories to last a lifetime. Don't be afraid to put your-

self out there and join in activities, because if you don't

you will regret it. High school is about figuring out who

you are and what you will do. Whatever you choose to

do, be happy. High school is a great ride...sit back and

enjoy it.

Back to School Night Thursday, September 26, 2013 7:00 p.m.

The Pinion, Volume 13 Issue 1

Back-To-School Night will begin in the gymnasium with a short meet-ing and then move to the classrooms for ten minute sessions. The purpose of the classroom sessions is to become acquainted with your sons’ and daughters’ teachers, course objectives, and expectations. Before you leave home, remember to get the names of your child’s teachers; we will provide a list of the teachers and their rooms when you arrive. The teachers will address parents who gather in each classroom as a group. Many questions we receive throughout the year are from freshman and senior parents; therefore, we have blocked out some time in or-der to answer any questions you may have. You will also have the opportunity to meet the members of the Board of Trustees of Paul VI High School who will be available in the Learning Media Center. To end the evening, we invite all parents to join us in the cafeteria after the last classroom session to enjoy beef-n-beer. There you will be able to meet other parents along with our staff members. You will also be able to purchase any of our PVI spirit gear in the cafe-teria during Back-To-School night.

We look forward to seeing many of you at Back-To-School Night!

With PowerSchool The Paul VI PowerSchool Parent Portal website http://powerschool.pvihs.org allows parents or guardians access to your students current grades, assignments, attendance records and other student information. The website is a secure password pro-tected site and you will only have access for your student.

All freshmen and students new to Paul VI will receive their PowerSchool user id and password in the mail the 2nd week of school. All returning students will use the same user id and password.

The current grade is updated daily and will change if assignments, tests, or quizzes are added to the teacher’s electronic gradebook. You can view the current grade and attendance by clicking grades and attendance. This screen shows your student’s courses, current grades, and teachers (with e-mail link). Click on the student’s current number grade to view all the tasks for that specific quarter. You will need to set up the e-mail communication by clicking e-mail notification and then completing the online screen.

PowerSchool Parent Portal can be an effective tool for helping your students stay on task and for keeping you the parents informed.

Problems or Concerns?

Excellence in learning is the goal, and communication is the key. If a student or parent has an academic concern, either or both should first confer with the teacher (or coach if a team concern). If the concern persists, each or both may contact a guidance counselor or a department chair who will assess the situa-tion and will confer with any number of people depended upon the circum-stances.

All teachers and coaches have school e-mail addresses that consist of the first letter of their first name followed by the last name and @pvihs.org. If you do not get a reply within two days, please contact [email protected] and I will make every effort to clear up the communication problem. Even when you want to speak to a teacher this is probably the best way to leave a message with your phone number and the times available. After all other avenues have been pur-sued, the student or parent should make an appointment with the Vice Principal of Academics or Principal.

National Honor Society

Just a reminder to gear up and get ready for the 2013-2014 school year with the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that upholds the principles of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students may not apply for membership in the National Honor Society. Members are selected

by the NHS faculty council based on student attainment of the four ideals mentioned.

In order to get ready for this upcoming school year, the NHS selec-tion process is as follows:

1. A preliminary list of potential inductees is derived from the jun-ior and senior class rank list. Students will only be considered if they have a minimum GPA of 3.7 and a leadership score of 3.25 or better.

2. After a discipline review of the candidates by the administration and faculty, eligible students will receive an application packet in the mail. Students will be evaluated and scored on the fol-lowing required items:

a. Student Service and Activity Forms b. Junior and Senior nominees should have at least

three hours of individual service outside of Paul VI beyond the hours required for Paul VI. The service

hours must be accompanied by the appropriate docu-mentation and signatures.

c. Student involvement in multiple school or outside activities is mandatory.

d. Write a 300-500 word essay defining his or her char-acter.

e. Ask three Paul VI teachers and one outside mentor to complete a recommendation form.

In order to be considered for membership all forms in the packet must be returned by the due date with the appropriate documentations and signatures. Failure to return any part of the application on time would eliminate a candidate from being considered.

After the packets have been sent out, a letter will be sent to parents and guardians. This letter will inform them of their child’s nomination and requirements. Parents or guardians will be required to return this letter with a signature. Failure to re-turn this letter will eliminate the nominee for consideration into the NHS.

3. A faculty council, comprised of five faculty members, appointed yearly by the principal, reviews the application packet and se-lects the final list of candidates.

The final list of candidates is submitted to the principal. If you have any questions regarding the NHS selection process, please feel free

to contact Ms. Estrella at [email protected].

PAUL VI PARTNERS WITH NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY

“PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY” by Donna Camardo

The University of Notre Dame offers a program we at Paul VI will implement this year and refresh over time. It is an athlete-centered program emphasizing character development and spirituality in sports. I am excited to direct this program with the help of parents, coaches, athletes, teachers and administrators at Paul VI. The Notre Dame staff will work with us on a weekly basis once they conduct our coaches clinic slated for Sunday, August 25th at 4pm. The clinic will run

4-5 hours and include a CAP-like program recognized nationally including sessions on bullying and hazing. The coach component will address such topics as Coaching as Ministry/Coaching for Character. We will learn to develop our teams as a moral community and strategies for developing positive partnerships with parents. The GROW approach to motivation is stressed which is an acronym for Goals-Relationships-Ownership-Winning. GROW is significant to the fact that this is an ongoing program. While at Paul VI, the PLACT instructor will present a one hour Parent Like A Champion Today Workshop to school families. Again the GROW approach is stressed, the cardinal virtues and the role of parents will be discussed. I will need a core group of parents to jump in with this as well as a transitional group each season. Our Champion Committee of Parents will help infuse this in our community. These parents will also assist in the recognition banquets and provide feedback. Our banquets will take on a new look this year reflecting the champion team culture. At Notre Dame, I was able to interact with coaches and administrators from all parts of the United States and Nova Scotia. We listened to keynote speakers expressing this program as a way to transform our sports programs. We addressed issues on racial situations, drinking, sexual assault, social media and their effect on team culture. We looked at differences between intensive and abusive coaches, looked at legal issues in sports and creating a moral community. The group CHAMP is a student-athlete group-character-honor and morality in play. The group addressed bullying and hazing. In phase II of the partnership I hope to have a CHAMPS group in place. An ancillary workshop was a game plan on becoming a collegiate athlete. I will offer this information as part of one of the workshops offered by our guidance department for student-athletes. All the activities were geared to the creation of a champion culture. Everything was entwined with God and spirituality. It was suggested that in addition to having team blessings and masses, we have an evening of reflection for each team where the adults present would include myself, a campus minister, a parent and our chaplain. In partnership with Notre Dame we will implement Play Like A Champion Today as a total school program. They will work with us in having some "measurable" goals over time for our Middle States preparation. They will also customize this for us. I will work with them over the summer in evaluating our athletic program/department. In the fall I hope to do an ethical inventory of our athletic program. End of season surveys, athlete and parent surveys are included in creating this culture. Other ideas include weekly captains' meetings and service activities. The buddy system, where one team is partnered with another to support them during their season and weekly quotes on the website to athletes and parents. There is so much we can do from hanging the PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY sign in the locker rooms as a start to getting Paul VI to be the premier Play Like A Champion partner in South Jersey. We are the first school in South Jersey to officially partner with the University of Notre Dame’s program. It is exciting and it is interwoven with the school mission statement. The bottom line is that this is an educational program with a research-based and athlete-centered curriculum designed to help coaches understand and fulfill their role as teachers of sports skills and life lessons through sports, to promote the moral and character development of adolescents and to foster spiritual development both on and off the playing field. So for all our coaches, parents, student-athletes and school community lets get ready to: PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY!!!!!

Institutional Advancement Message We are all part of PVIs exceptional legacy! Achieving continued success in our endeav-ors requires the support of the entire community. It is with gratitude to you, that we com-pleted our third successful Annual Giving Campaign -- which raises unrestricted funds that support a number of vital services and initiatives for the school while keeping tuition at a reasonable cost. Many of you have attended events, participated as a volunteer, or made a monetary contribution. Your involvement has inspired others to join us in our efforts. Here are a few enhancements we were able to accomplish this past year be-cause of the annual giving campaign. Academic and Merit Scholarship Awards - Four academic scholarships were awarded to four incoming freshmen, class of 2017, who earned top scores on the High School Placement Test (HSPT). Another $100,000 in donations was designated to aca-demic merit scholarships – this is double the amount received in previous years. Broadcast Communications in the Cafeteria - Two new flat screens were installed in the cafeteria in order to provide announcements from our broadcast studio before the end of each period …we’ve coined this “Last Byte”! Auditorium Enhancements - Stage II of the renovation is underway including new house lighting, a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, and brand new theatre seating to enhance our performing arts program. (You can also have “your seat in the spotlight” by purchasing one of these new seats via the annual giving campaign – for details visit: www.pvihs.org and click on Seat Campaign). You will be receiving a letter in the mail shortly kicking off this year’s Annual Giving Campaign. Whether you are able to make a donation, volunteer for the phonathon, or attend an event, we appreciate your contribution to Paul VI in the coming year. Your generous commitment is essential in the daily experiences and growth of our students.
