What is a Groceryship?A Groceryship is essentially a scholarship for groceries. This scholarship aims at teaching families healthy, affordable, proportionate meals and snacking, as well as participating in other health-related behaviors to encourage healthy lifestyles.

Pilot Study The pilot study provided 8 families with 6 months worth of

funding for groceries, a toolkit, and weekly meetings that included cooking demonstrations, circle sharing, nutrition education, readings, films and more.

Eligibility for the program required families to be low-income, struggling with obesity and/or food related health issues. Families were selected after attending an information session, submitting an application, and being interviewed. Commitment and strong desire to change were emphasized in the interviews for selection.

After families graduate the initial phase, they become mentors for the next class of groceryships recipients, and are encouraged to continue attending meetings.
