How we got here 2 years ago the City of Jersey City and Google Ideas asked the following question:

How can data be used to help keep our communities safe?



How we got here Last year, Open JC was invited to investigate that question and after a detailed discovery a more defined question emerged:

How can technology expand the reach and enhance the relevance of public safety messages that the JC Police Captains share with the community?


Open JC spurred out of Code for JC program

CJC Brigade began

Bridged community of tech-savvy + civic minded residents

Built relationships with departments within city government

Engaged the community around civic issues (Hour Of Code, Path Data Jam, National Day of civic hacking)


JC Mayor’s Office + Google Ideas initial convos

Mayor’s Office referred CJC to Google Ideas

CJC’s new organizational structure needed

Birth of Open JC (OJC)

behavior to keep their families and property safe. 2.  Call the BeSafe # to report something, or 911 in an emergency. 3.  Remember BeSafe tips as you carry on with your day. 4.  Take an action based on a message. 5.  Share a message with your neighbors. 6.  Share BeSafe with others.
