International Care and Kindness Week

Thanks to the efforts of Pilots everywhere, the second week in November has been namedINTERNATIONAL CARE & KINDNESS WEEK!

I n t e r n a t i o n a l C a r e a n d Kindness Week was created to bring awareness to how simple acts can change a day, a life or the world by s imply showing someone you care. During this special week, Pilots engage in numerous activities to emphasize and encourage kindness, caring and general good will to all! From giving “Little Pick Me Ups” to strangers, family and friends to encouraging families (including their own!) to “Get Real!” and put their devices down during mealtimes, Pilots spread the news that caring for one another means rea l l y engaging with one another. Put down your phone, and pick up someone’s hand. Although Pilot and Anchor Clubs perform full P i ck Me Ups for fami ly caregivers in their communities all throughout the year, special emphasis is also placed on this s ignature program during International Care and Kindness Week.

Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday that is observed annually on November 11, honoring people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.

On October 14, Carol and Claire represented our club at the fall WFSU pledge drive. We worked a two-hour shift and were quite busy, answering telephone calls which brought needed funding to the radio station.

The Mission and Vision of Pick Me Ups

The Mission of the Pick Me Ups Initiative Pick Me Ups seeks to uplift and appreciate family caregivers by providing needed services or small gifts to brighten their day. The Vision of the Pick Me Ups Initiative The vision of the Pick Me Ups initiative is to promote awareness of the needs of family caregivers. Who are Family Caregivers? ü Family caregivers care for the elderly, adults with chronic diseases, and/or children with special needs. ü At any time, there are an estimated 65.7 Million Caregivers in the U.S.* ü 78% of caregivers want more help or info about caregiving topics, but don’t know where to turn. * ü According to the National Alliance for Caregiving: “The most popular aspects of caregiving for which caregivers would like help or information are keeping their loved one safe at home (37%), managing their own stress (34%), easy activities to do with their care recipient (34%), and finding time for themselves (32%).” ü According to CNN “It's difficult to say how many child caregivers there are in the United States. The only national survey on the topic, a 2005 report by the National Alliance for Caregiving (PDF), estimated that there were at least 1.3 million between the ages of 8 and 18 -- most caring for a parent or grandparent, some looking after a sibling.” ü According to a 2006 study conducted by Civic Enterprises for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, 22% of high school dropouts in the United States leave school to care for a family member. Grant application to support Pick Me Ups (1 per club per year-quarterly deadlines) and resources can be found at: http://www.pilotinternational.org/im-an-anchor/resources/pick-me-ups-resources/

Happy Birthday to:Nov 6 - Yvonne

Nov 7 - Annarene

Yvonne shares her birth date with Sally Field, Maria Shriver and John Philip Sousa. Annarene shares her birth date with Marie Curie, Billy Graham and Joni Mitchell.

November info: birthstone is topaz and the flower is the chrysanthemum. Both Yvonne and Annarene are the zodiac sign of Scorpio - loyal, passionate, resourceful, observant and dynamic. Scorpios are fiercely independent. They are able to accomplish anything they put their mind to and they won't give up. They are perfectly suited to being on their own. They are not social butterflies like some other zodiac signs and some actually prefer to live on their own that way there is never any issue of who controls what at home.

is a project of t h e F l o r i d a D i s t r i c t o f P i l o t International. Our District sponsors three scholarship houses in Florida at three different colleges, Florida State University in Tallahassee, University of Florida in Gainesville and Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers. These three houses have a total of 61 young women residing in a cooperative living arrangement. Management of the houses are by the young women themselves. Members of Pilot Clubs in Florida support these houses through fund raisers at our Fall Council and District Convention and through m e m o r i a l s a n d d o n a t i o n s . Individual Pilot Clubs support this project by contributing to the house with gift cards and requested items. Southern Scholarship Foundation (SSF) has applications for residency on the i r web s i te and each application is judged on financial need, high academic promise, a high level of motivation, outstanding character, integrity and citizenship, based on recommendations by school officials and community leaders and a willingness to share in household duties and responsibilities. PSHF has a nine member board, elected by the members of the Florida District. For more PSHF i n f o r m a t i o n , g o t o www.pilotflorida.org and click on the PSHF link. The North Region of the Florida District held their Leadership Training in Marianna, sponsored by the Pilot Club of Marianna, who not only provided the venue but also provided us with a continental breakfast and a great lunch. Delores Spooner, District Committee Representative, Pilot Club of Quincy, organized the training and was our “emcee.” There were 24 Pilot members from the six Pilot Clubs of the North Region (Pilot Club of Pensacola, Pilot Club of Panama City, Pilot Club of DeFuniak Springs, Pilot Club of Marianna, Pilot Club of Quincy and Pilot Club of Tallahassee) who attended. We were pleased to have our Governor Mary Jane McMillen (Pilot Club of South Brevard) attend and speak with us. Also in attendance were past Governor Barbara McKenzie (Pilot Club of St. Lucie County), past Governor Virginia Bunde (Pilot Club of Pensacola) and past Governor Joan Stadsklev (Pilot Club of Marianna). Jane Furlong read the Code of Ethics. At the training we learned more about the duties of directors, secretary, treasurer, president/president elect, how to prepare a budget, PortalBuzz, Pilot International Founders Fund, Pilot Scholarship House Foundation and Pick Me Ups. It was fun to get together with other Pilots and to also have the opportunity to learn something new. Claire, Annarene, Charlotte and Jane represented our club.
