DES
K DEAR CONGREGANTS
On Passover, we asked the question - how is this night different from all other nights? We asked and recited the Haggadah alone in our homes -many of us without our loved ones to enhance and enjoy the beauty of the Seder.
A joke that I have often heard is that I am leaving the year 2020 out of my resumé because I did nothing. In life, there is
a reason for everything and it is up to us to search and find meaning in our daily experiences. The year has been trying emotionally for everyone. The purpose of the Shofar is exactly that. Maimonides states that when we hear the Shofar sounds, we must awaken and seize the moment as a time of introspection and self-reflection.
How many of us have found new meaning in the values of friendship and family? We often take for granted simply going out and getting together with friends and family. Community has taken on a new meaning. Our reality has moved to Zoom and Facetime. In our loneliness, we have come together as a community in ways that we never imagined.
Only a few months ago, the world did not know what social distancing was. It has become both part of our lexicon and a defining feature of our lives. There has however been a growing movement calling for the term to be changed. We should be physical distancing not social distancing.
This coming year we should take the time and make an effort to strengthen our social relationships with family, friends and community. Beth Zion has provided such an important outlet for so many of us to connect at this difficult time through virtual prayers, lectures and social events.
Let’s hope and pray that this year’s Shofar blasts usher in a new era of renewed commitment to the things that should be most important in our lives.
On behalf of Rivka and myself, Shana Tova

I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on the lessons Covid taught me both in personal and synagogue life. Covid has created great challenges for many people and many organizations. It has also created great opportunity and great wealth for
others. My personality does not allow me to complain but rather to find the positive in every situation. I have learned, what I believe
are 3 very valuable lessons; the appreciation of family, the power of G-d and the urgency of NOW.
Appreciation of Family
Pre - Covid we were all caught up in routines. We often pushed off the time we should spend with family. Personally, and I’m sure for many others, work consumed a good portion of my time. I would justify that I was working so hard to care and provide for my family. In mid-March when everything came to a fast halt, reality set in. I was restricted in how I can see my parents. I realized I would not see my siblings for a long time. I was worried I would not have the opportunity to see my grandmother again.
In early April, my brother’s wife gave birth to a boy. I experienced my first Zoom bris. I could not believe that I would not be able to attend my little nephew’s bris, in person. During the bris, I was scrolling through all the attendees to see who was there. Family from all over the world was there, people who would never be able to attend in person. It hit me then and there that we need to stop waiting for the pandemic to end and start appreciating what we have and what G-d wants us to learn from it. I realized that you can be somewhere without physically being there and you can physically be somewhere without being there.
I used the extra time to actually be there for my family. I took on special projects with the kids. We even built a beautiful vegetable garden. We spent a lot of time outdoors - biking and visiting my parents (from the porch). I realized the importance of quality and meaningful time with family.
The Power of G-d
When the world came to a screeching halt my first thought was WOW!
We think we are so powerful. We think we have everything under control. Our technology will not fail us. We are too advanced. Then on a dime, G-d snaps his fingers and the whole world is brought to their knees. All of a sudden, we know nothing and control nothing.
This pandemic made me realize that our lives were too fast. G-d looked down on us and said ‘slow down you’re missing the point.’ Focus on the important things. He gave us the opportunity to stop and revaluate our priorities.
My prayer became stronger. My relationship with family became more meaningful and my priorities for work changed for the better.
I realized that we need to thank G-d every day for what we have and never take it for granted.
The Urgency of NOW
We all had big plans but didn’t care to make them a reality. We pushed off visiting family and friends. We pushed off connecting with our land and visiting Israel. We are stubborn about saying we are sorry or I love you. We were in a constant cycle of delaying things - thinking don’t worry, I’ll get to it at a later date.
Covid made us realize that we need to start working on the important things now. Not tomorrow not in a month but now.
This struck me especially hard with regards to Beth Zion. I grew up at the shul and have a special place for it in my heart. I have poured my heart and soul into its development and growth. What I ultimately realized is that my generation must start caring about synagogues or they will become extinct. My parents and grandparents generation could not fathom not being a part of a synagogue.
I will no longer have the attitude of waiting for people to come around. I challenge everyone to be a part of the growth. I plead with you to inspire your children and grandchildren to be a part of a synagogue. To encourage them to support their shul both financially and with their time. We cannot wait any longer, the time is NOW!!!
On behalf of Bella, Rachie, Benji and myself, I want to take this opportunity to wish all the members, clergy, staff, friends and future members of Beth Zion, a Shana Tova and a Gmar Chatima Tova!

Pesach Pillar.
Unfortunately, Covid – 19 got in the way. These have been very trying times and will continue to be for a while. G-d willing, a vaccine will be found much sooner than later. The positives that have come out of these trying times are that a lot of us have learned to Zoom and
a lot of us have started exercise programs along with better eating habits (myself included).
I hope that you all have been safe and sound.
October 4 and 5 - we had the annual Scholar in Residence Shabbaton in memory of Rabbi Sidney Shoham Z”L. It was sponsored by the Sheva & David Honig Fund and the Shoham and Lieberman families. March 9 – What can I say about the Megilla reading and the pre – youth party and the post adult party. We had over 500 people in the building. The food was aplenty. The kids enjoyed the different activities, the food, the cotton candy and last but not least – the inflatables.

On the subject of synagogue security, we are part of the Federation Community Security Network, having invested in said network. A special thank you to Ilan Saul and his committee for their hard work. There will be security modifications and additions in the shul. There will always be a struggle to balance enhanced and improved security along with maintaining an open and welcome environment. There will be new security protocols which you will be informed of. If you see something or someone out of the ordinary, please let us know.
On December 17, 2019, Jewel and I were blessed with our first grandchild, Max Lou (Chaim Lev).
Our daughter, Shayna was married to David Sacks on August 20, 2020. It was not the large wedding that we had planned for but we all made the best of the situation during this pandemic. The simcha took place in the Yitzhak Rabin Park outside Beth Zion. It was a small, beautiful, intimate affair.
On behalf of Jewel, Mitchell, Joni & Eric and Max, Shayna & David, Aviva and myself, I wish you a Shana Tova UMetuka – a happy, sweet and safe 5781 in these new “normal” times

ORThe Power of the Shofar
One of the main highlights of the Rosh Hashanah service is definitely hands down, the Blowing of the Shofar. As a child, I remember looking at my watch and timing my Rabbi to see how long the Tekia
Gedola was going to be.
However, the question is: Why is a Shofar chosen as a tool to be used on the High Holidays to be used part of the service?
This question can be answered through a parable by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichov.
One day, a king decided to journey through his kingship and to meet one on one with his people. He would not wear his crown or his royal clothes. However, while the king was on his journey, he forgot his way back to his castle. He met a poor man who recognized the king and knew how to get back to the castle. The king was thrilled and told the poor man he will always be indebted to him. Some time later, the poor man was accused of a crime he did not commit. He was brought before the king. The king was about to judge him and he asked the poor man for his final words. The poor man asked the king before he renders his judgement, if he could wear
the same clothes he wore the day the poor man helped him and brought him back to the palace. The king obliged and immediately had mercy on this poor man and vindicated him.
When Hashem wanted the Torah to be given, He went to all the nations trying to find it a home. Every nation refused expect the smallest, the Jewish People. At the giving of the Torah, a Shofar was blown. When we blow the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah, we remind Hashem about our acceptance of the Torah. Through the voice of the Shofar, Hashem has mercy on us. Through the Shofar Hashem will bless each and every one of us with a Shana Tova u’Metuka.
Due to Covid our Youth Minyan is awaiting to commence again. Please encourage your youth to participate. I look forward to welcoming them to the minyan. In addition to services we will have pizza, hockey nights and fun Kiddushim and much more to look forward to.
On behalf of my wife, children and myself I would like to wish each and every one a good, healthy and sweet year with the challenges of the past year behind us and only peace and prosperity for all the time to come.
Rabbi Avraham Swartz

We will soon be saying Goodbye
to two beloved members of our Beth Zion family, namely Odile and Rabbi Michael Wolff, who will be making Aliya to Israel after the Chagim, b’ezrat Hashem. Their son Benjamin already left in July, and their other two children, Julie and Rafael (not to mention all their grandchildren), have been in Israel for a number of years already. It should be quite a reunion! Besides being the Chaplain Rabbi at both the Donald Berman Jewish Eldercare Centre (for the last 10 years) as well as at the Maimonides Geriatric Hospital (where he spent 22 years providing spiritual guidance to all the residents and their families), Rabbi Wolff was also the interim rabbi at Beth Zion in 5767. A weekly tradition for years, Rabbi Wolff has taught a class before Mincha on Shabbat afternoons. The whole family is known for their hospitality and Chessed (kindness), and willingness to help out whenever needed. They will be greatly missed. Ce n’est qu’un au revoir. Le-Hitraot, and Hatzlacha Rabba in this new stage of your lives!

As long time members of Beth Zion, we have worked tirelessly with the committee, even during the Pandemic to arrange quality programs for everyone. These upcoming presentations will either be on Zoom or at the synagogue depending on the situation at that time. The synagogue office will keep you informed closer to each event. We do hope that we can count on you to participate and show support for our congregation. If you have any program ideas that you would like to share or be involved in any way, please leave a message at the synagogue office - 514-489-8411. We would like to thank Rabbi Yamin Benarroch for manning the Zoom programs during the months of June and July. His Divrei Torah at the onset of each program, making sure everything ran smoothly and his closing remarks were inspiring and always left us with something to think about. Rabbi, we couldn’t have done it without you!
Many thanks to Zev Mestel, Rivka Berman and Jacqueline Lehrer, who were always available, regardless of deadlines, to prepare the flyers for each event and guide us with great ideas for various programs. They consistently go above and beyond the call of duty!
