PILI’s mission is to cultivate a lifelong commitment to public interest law and pro bono service within the Illinois legal community to expand the availability of legal services for people, families and communities in need.

We envision a legal community with a deeply rooted culture of service, where law students, lawyers and legal professionals at all stages of their careers engage in public interest law or pro bono work, and remain committed to addressing the unmet legal needs of the poor and underrepresented.

www.pili.org

There is a lot to be excited about at PILI in 2015. We now fund more Law Student Interns than ever with new Internships across the state, our number of Graduate Fellows has increased significantly, our Alumni Network has evolved to offer a range of direct service and educational opportunities, and our Pro Bono Initiative is a driving force behind expanding pro bono legal services throughout Illinois.

There is a lot for us to feel grateful for too. We could not have achieved this momentous progress over the last few years without support from friends

like you. PILI is incredibly grateful to the many law firms, corporations, foundations, law schools, and individual donors whose generosity helps us pursue our mission. PILI is particularly thankful to the law firm of Foley & Lardner LLP for their in-kind donation in hosting PILI’s offices, and to The John Marshall Law School for housing our summer programming for Interns and Fellows. Remarkably, in the last five years alone, individual giving to PILI has more than doubled and we’ve seen increases in other areas of giving as well. We are both humbled and inspired by your

From the President and Executive Director

commitment to supporting PILI’s mission to cultivate a lifelong commitment to public interest law and pro bono service within the Ilinois legal community.

There is also a lot of work for us still to do, and for 2016, we are setting our sights higher than ever. In addition to maintaining this growth across all of our programs, for the first time in over 10 years, we are raising our Law Student Intern stipend to better support law students who serve clients in need while laying the foundation for a career in

public interest law. Increasing our stipend will ensure that PILI continues to attract top-rate Interns, and that law students participating in the program will be able to cover their basic living expenses.

This is just one of our objectives for 2016. I invite you to read this Year in Review to learn more about where we’ve been in 2015 and where we’re going in the year to come. I hope it leaves you feeling as excited, grateful and inspired as we are.

PILI’s Law Student Internship Program connects law students from across the country with public interest law organizations in Illinois. Interns work 400 hours full-time during the summer or 200 hours part-time during the school year, with PILI funding their stipends, ensuring quality supervision by experienced agency attorneys, and providing supplemental educational, networking and mentoring opportunities. Through this program, PILI helps our partner agencies increase their impact while also helping law students develop their legal and client interaction skills, build their professional networks, and strengthen their commitment to public interest law and service.

PILI Interns haven’t had a raise in their stipend since 2005. Some of them are coming to Illinois from law schools far across the country. All of them need to be able to pay for their basic housing, transportation and other expenses so they don’t have to take out more loans, take another job, or go further into debt.

We are excited about this big new step to better support the next generation of public interest lawyers.

Page 6: PILI FY2015 Year in Review

Through the PILI Graduate Fellowship Program, new associates at Chicago law firms spend 300 hours between graduation and joining their firm working at public interest law organizations in Illinois. PILI ensures quality supervision by experienced legal aid attorneys and provides supplemental educational, networking and mentoring opportunities.

New associates who participate in PILI’s Fellowship Program are connected to pro bono from the very beginning of their careers, and after joining their firms, they often continue to work with their agency on pro bono matters.

Is your law firm interested in sponsoring PILI Fellows? Firms can benefit from their Fellows’ experience and training in law as well as their connections to legal service agencies once they start at the firm. Sponsoring firms also take an active role in encouraging their incoming associates to develop

a long-term commitment to pro bono practice.

Visit our website or contact PILI Executive Director Michael Bergmann by e-mail at [email protected] for more information about the benefits of sponsoring PILI Fellows and details about how your firm can get involved.

Over 3,700 law students and graduates have participated in PILI’s Internship and Fellowship Programs. These public interest lawyers span the globe and the profession: from firm and corporate attorneys, to members of the government sector and the judiciary, to members of the higher education and public interest law sectors. PILI’s Alumni Network builds and maintains the connection between past PILI Interns and Fellows and the public interest law community through educational, networking, service, and leadership opportunities.

PILI Alumni activities are guided by the PILI Alumni Network Leadership Council, a group of Alumni leaders from different sectors of the legal profession who are committed to staying

connected to PILI and to public interest law. The Council plans CLE programs, organizes service opportunities, raises money to support PILI’s programs, and promotes involvement with PILI to

the broader legal community.

Pro Bono Initiative

8www.pili.org/pro-bono

PILI works collaboratively with law firms, corporations, public interest law organizations, law schools, and members of the bar and bench to expand the availability of pro bono legal services across Illinois. Through our Pro Bono Initiative, we offer a wide range of pro bono programming and resources, we develop innovative projects and cultivate best practices, and we celebrate ongoing pro bono service to enhance the scope and quantity of pro bono legal assistance in Illinois.

Pro Bono Roundtables and Forums: These events bring together pro bono leaders from law firms, corporations, legal service agencies and law schools to discuss timely pro bono issues, challenges and best practices. The Pro Bono Roundtables allow for unique constituent group-specific conversations, while the Forums bring everyone together for in-depth discussion among a cross-section of the legal profession.

Pro Bono Resources: PILI’s resources offer information and guidance on creating pro bono programs, expanding existing pro bono programs, learning about pro bono opportunities, engaging volunteers, taking advantage of existing relationships within the legal and public interest community, and more.

Celebrating Pro Bono: PILI firmly believes in the importance of honoring the pro bono contributions of law students, lawyers and legal professionals who are making a difference for low-income people with legal needs. Through a variety of awards and recognition events, PILI raises the profile of pro bono across Illinois.

Page 11: PILI FY2015 Year in Review

Judicial Circuit Pro Bono CommitteesPILI has launched Pro Bono Committees in six of Illinois’ judicial circuits in partnership with Prairie State Legal Services and Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation. These committees bring together the judiciary and the local bar to raise awareness of the need for legal services, to recruit more attorneys to do pro bono, and to recognize each circuit’s pro bono champions. In 2015, our Pro Bono Committees created new legal clinics and help desks, held pro bono CLE programs and trainings, celebrated their local pro bono heroes, and explored newideas to address specific community needs. And, during National Pro Bono Week, October 26-30, 2015, each of the committees held events and together hosted 400 guests to celebrate and encourage pro bono participation. These six Pro Bono Committees are engaging hundreds of lawyersand legal professionals across the state in an innovative approach to expanding pro bono.

Illinois Pro Bono Pledge

Nearly 120 law firms, corporations, and individual attorneys and mediators

across Illinois have signed on to PILI’s Pro Bono Pledge, which has launched through our

Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committees. Thesesignatories acknowledge the responsibility of

all members of the legal profession to increase access to our legal system by expanding pro

bono legal services to address the significant unmet need for legal assistance among the

low-income underrepresented individuals and families in Illinois.

“Because of PILI’s leadership in our circuit’s Pro Bono Committee,

pro bono is at the forefront, and access to justice is a reality

in the Tenth Judicial Circuit.”- Judge Lisa Wilson

Each year, PILI hosts our Annual Awards Luncheon to celebrate the best aspects of the legal profession: the skill, commitment, and generosity of the lawyers, law students, law firms and corporations dedicating countless hours each year to public interest work. In fiscal year 2015, our Annual Awards Luncheon was held on December 3, 2014. With nearly 500 people in attendance from law firms, corporations, law schools, the judiciary, and our partner legal service organizations across the state, we were pleased to recognize our four award recipients, whose remarkable service has inspired us and made us proud.

The Alfred C. Tisdahl Memorial Internship is funded by the Francis Beidler Foundation to honor the memory of prominent Chicago litigator Alfred C. Tisdahl, who died in 2000.

Baker & Mckenzie InternThe law firm of Baker & McKenzie LLP is a longtime sponsor of PILI’s programs and events, and starting in 2014, the firm increased its support to also sponsor a school-year Intern. Sarah Geduldig from Loyola University Chicago School of Law was an Intern at the Center for Disability and Elder Law (CDEL). Baker & McKenzie has had a special relationship with CDEL for decades, with many lawyers at the firm serving on CDEL’s Board of Directors and generously donating their time and talent on dozens of legal matters for CDEL clients. Funding a school-year Internship placement at CDEL through PILI further supports their important work.

Chicago Bar Foundation InternsAs the charitable arm of the Chicago Bar Association, The Chicago Bar Foundation brings the legal community together to improve access to justice for people in need and to make the legal system more fair and efficient for everyone. “I have helped place children in stable environments where their best interests will be served. I have helped place disabled adults under the care of those who will serve their best interests. I have helped families take steps towards finalizing adoptions. This was fully hands-on work with a lot of face to face client interaction, which will make my future advocacy on behalf of my clients even stronger.”
