Tips from the UCLA Undergraduate Admissions Office for choosing a major:

1) Think about your educational / career goal – Ask yourself if a specific major is really required for your educational or career goal. Look for majors that interest you and will also make you a more competitive applicant.

2) Do your research – Do not assume that you need a specific major for your career or graduate school goals, research the requirements on the professional school admissions websites and check with potential employers.

3) Look for similar majors – Many majors have the same major prep requirements for transfer listed

on assist.org indicating that the foundation of the major is similar. For example if you have an

interest in pre-Psychology, also consider Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, or Sociology.

4) Look for majors you are most competitive for – Review the admit rate & GPA range for your major on the UCLA Profile of Admitted Transfer Students and see where you stand. Then compare the statistics for related majors to see which gives you a competitive edge.

5) Consider other ways to study what you want – UCLA offers over 80 different minors which you can apply for after you transfer. There are also over 1,000 clubs and organizations that you can join. Other opportunities to engage in your areas of interest include internships, volunteer work, travel study, study abroad, and research with faculty even outside of your department.

6) Join the Honors Transfer Program – As a Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) participant (through

the Pierce Honors Transfer Program) you are given priority consideration for admission to the College of Letters and Sciences and also if you are not selected for admission to your first choice major, UCLA review your application for an alternate major.

Other tips for using this guide:

After reading the brief description of the major listed on this guide, click on the website link to the department for more information on the major and explore the following:

1) What coursework is required for completion of the major? Use the UCLA General Catalog to read the course descriptions to see if the topics are of interest to you.

2) What types of research opportunities are available for undergraduates? Most websites have a “research” tab that highlights opportunities for students to engage in research.

3) What are the research interests of faculty in the department? If you are thinking of graduate school in

the future, developing a connection with faculty members in your major is critical for the application process. Professors usually have websites that you can find through the department.

This knowledge is combined to reduce complex phenomena in the real world to mathematical or physical models that further our understanding of Earth's physical characteristics and behavior. Classical physics, supported by field data, mathematics, and computing, is used to understand diverse processes from ocean circulation and earthquakes to the formation of planets and the flow of particles and electromagnetic fields in space. These skills are valuable in environmental, engineering, and resource studies and more broadly in any kind of career that requires quantitative analysis. 2015 Admit Rate 60% GPA range 3.08-3.90 (Geophysics & Space Physics) 2015 Admit Rate 33% GPA range 3.52-3.52 (Geophhysics/ Applied Geophysics) German B. The UC Application asks you to respond to one required question and 3 out of 7 additional questions. Which three questions you choose to answer are up to you, but you should select questions that are most relevant to your experience and that best reflect your individual circumstances. Each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words.

Required question: Please describe how you have prepared for your intended major, including your readiness to succeed in your upper division courses once you enroll at the university.

Choose to answer any three of the following seven questions:

1) Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

2) Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

3) What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

4) Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

6) What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

7) What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of California?

Keep in mind that all UC campuses see the same application so it is recommended that you not refer to a specific school in your personal statement.
