Pico Awarded Design Contract for the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015

Pico announced that it was appointed to design the Malaysia Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015 by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of

Malaysia (MITI). To be held in Milan, Italy, from May 1st to October 31st 2015, the next Universal Exposition has a theme that is important to all

humanity: ‘Feeding the planet, energy for life’, and promises to be the highlight of the global calendar that year.

Malaysia’s interpretation of the core Expo theme is ‘Towards a Sustainable Food Ecosystem’. This fascinating journey from tradition to innovation will

explore an economic transformation plan which will propel Malaysia’s small agricultural sector into a large-scale high-income industry that contributes

to the global struggle against poverty.

Expo Milano 2015 will be Pico’s ninth World Expo over the past 30 years. The Malaysia Pavilion will become part of Pico’s expanding portfolio, which

currently includes more than 70 pavilions.

2013 Pico Group Annual Awards Presented at the 30th Pico International Conference

In mid-December, some 250 delegates from all over the world arrived in Guangzhou, China for the 30th anniversary edition of the annual Pico

International Conference. This three-day event was a hugely productive forum for exchanging views and ideas on corporate tactics and strategic

developments, but also a great venue for team-building through social activities like the SL Chia Golf Challenge and Pico Group Treasure Hunt.

The conference closed with an unforgettable grand finale dinner, during which the Pico Group Annual Awards were presented.

We were delighted to have Mr. Peter Benz, professor of Spatial Design at the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University, acting as our

honourable judge for the Most Innovative Design awards and the Best Creative Director of the Year Award.

The results of the ceremony are presented in full below for your reference and enjoyment.

Visiting the Beijing Cultural Creative Industry Visitor Gallery is like

embarking on a cultural tour of the city, a place where one can have a

memorable and personal encounter with the metropolis. Pico designed

and fabricated the Centre’s entire visitor gallery, and was also responsible

for developing the gallery’s storyline, spatial environment, interactive

experiences and content.

As this was the first gallery of its kind to specifically promote China’s

cultural creative industry, the team focused on making the integration

of traditional art forms with digitally-created experiences the design

cornerstone for the 6,000 sq. m. project. They created a fascinating

journey through old and new Beijing, mingling historic sites through

storytelling, content development and leading technology; while also

providing a multi-functional space in a modern, cutting-edge environment.

Liberal use of open space allowed the team to plan for different traffic

flow scenarios, while zone colours, symbols and applications were used

to make navigation easier. Special interactive zones with multimedia

applications also give visitors hands-on experiences with learning cultural

and creative content.

Judge’s comment: “The Visitor Gallery of the Beijing Cultural Creative

Industry incorporates state-of-the-art technology with varied spatial

situations, innovative applications and coherent visuals to produce an

immersive experience and leaves the visitor in awe.” - Mr. Peter Benz

November through February is traditionally a very festive period in Hong Kong, and it makes for a very exciting and dynamic retail environment.

Christmas cheer quickly transitions to Chinese New Year celebrations, and joy and festive fun are everywhere. During this extended holiday season,

almost every shopping mall and building in the city are dressed up and decorated to entertain visitors and keep shoppers in a jolly mood.

In collaboration with the celebrated UK brand Liberty of London, famous for its unique fabric prints, our teams helped Elements Mall bring the spirit

of Chinese New Year to life through the theme ‘Truly East Meeting West’. Bespoke decorations throughout all zones of the mall underlined the

theme, with the centerpiece being a huge dancing lion wrapped in Liberty fabric.

Judge’s comment: “The design captivates the audience in particular through its innovative and very sensitive use of textile materials. The integration

of contemporary colours and patterns with traditional cultural artefacts and symbols from both East and West achieves idiosyncratic uniqueness,

which distinguishes this particular CNY-decoration from the many others in shopping malls across Hong Kong.” - Mr. Peter Benz

Sandance, Dubai’s premiere music festival, is an annual gathering of world-renowned musicians. Welcoming fans from all over the Emirates and beyond,

this five star music festival boasts an impressive lineup of main stage events, backstage experiences, VVIP treats and of course – incredible music.

Pico provided a turnkey total brand activation of this event in 2013 for the main sponsor Toyota, designing engaging and innovative stands for Toyota

projects. The team’s original and unique activation ideas kept the audience coming back for more, but the most creative star of the show was the

Toyota POSE! Activation, a fun activity which allowed party people to pose for an optical illusion-based photo-op and then immediately upload the

results to Facebook. Hundreds of photos were uploaded, each full of smiles and happy faces.

Judge’s comment: “The experience provided for visitors was resource-effective, easy and sustainable to produce, yet also very successful in attracting

guest participation and interaction. Through the integration of basic social media applications, it was very effective in spreading and multiplying the

intended message at rather low cost. The design thereby certainly achieved the desired publicity impact at very reasonable value for money. In the

context of a music festival this kind of experience to promote a car brand is unexpected, new and innovative.” - Mr. Peter Benz

Creative Director of the Year //

Her success in directing and managing the Beijing Cultural Creative Industry Visitor Gallery project

resulted in this personal award for Song Jifang.

Ms Song’s intentions of creating a journey of curiosity and discovery in a unique and multi-

functional space filled with an abundance of cultural creative content were fully realised in this

ambitious and triumphant project.

Judge’s comment: “Putting aside its enormous scope and scale, what made the Beijing Creative

Cultural Visitor Centre project an immensely complex and complicated endeavour was the public

attention it was certain to attract, even during the realisation phase. However, it was obvious that

under the leadership of Song Jifang, the Pico Beijing team was going to solve every problem and

overcome every obstacle with their competence, diligence and perseverance. There was no

question in the judges’ minds and no hesitation that this year – the Creative Director award should

go to Jifang.” - Mr. Peter Benz

As a global leader in the lighting industry, Philips is constantly seeking

new and pioneering lighting solutions. At the 2013 Guangzhou Lighting

Show, Pico activated Philips’ presence through designing, fabricating and

project managing their 600 sq. m. booth using the theme and concept

‘see what light can do’.

Working closely with the client, much effort went into preparing for

the show, from pre-planning and carefully choosing and producing

the materials, all the way through to opening day. The planning and

coordination stages involved liaising with many stakeholders, including

complex discussions with Philips’ engineers and Pico electricians on the

control systems for the LED lighting.

In terms of design, our teams used transparent cloth for partitions instead

of the traditional wood, which added a mystical, almost supernatural

quality to the booth. We also used a new material called Procedes Chenel,

a type of paper which is rapidly gaining traction in exhibition decoration –

being attractive, environmentally friendly and extremely flexible.

The end result was a beautiful, impactful lighting show that allowed

visitors to not only to discover ‘the other side of light’, but also to discover

‘the other side of the environment’ through the magic of light.

April 2013 brought the 15th annual Shanghai International Auto Show to the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Pico serviced no less than

eight clients at the show, further reinforcing our position as the go-to exhibition company in China, including a number of headline projects.

Infiniti had a big presence at Auto Shanghai, launching the Asian premiere of the Q50 at their 1,588 sq. m. two-storey booth. The booth, one of

the first to roll out Infiniti’s new branding strategy and product names, was the largest in the company’s global auto show profile and was built by

Pico. Extending our three-year partnership with the brand, the futuristic and environmentally-friendly design gained high praise from the company’s

Japanese headquarters.

The 2013 edition of the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS), Asia’s premier design-led furniture and furnishings platform, was held in early

March. Making its debut in 1981, the IFFS is regarded by industry experts as the most distinctive channel for regional and international companies

in the furniture industry to penetrate the global market. This show marked the ninth year in a row that Pico played a leading role at the IFFS. We

provided design and fabrication services for several exhibitors and five pavilions spread over six halls - the Green Pavilion, Thai Pavilion, Anji Pavilion,

Vietnam Pavilion and Mozaic Pavilion.

Pico’s biggest challenge of the show was to help one client - Kenas - build one of the largest booths at the show, at an astounding 3,000 sq. m. Our

team helped activate a number of green elements for the clients, including the Green Pavilion, showcasing eco-friendly furniture products and

materials employed by various designers and companies. The pavilion itself used paper pasted onto a wooden backdrop, minimising the use of

non-recyclable materials. Pico is proud to have contributed to our clients success at this year’s IFFS.

Founded in 1970, Art Basel is a prominent series of art shows primarily

displaying modern and contemporary art works. Beginning in Basel,

Switzerland, the show expanded to Miami Beach in 2002, and to Hong

Kong in 2013.

Pico was appointed the official contractor of the inaugural Art Basel Hong

Kong, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This first

show traced twelve decades of art history across four sectors: Galleries,

Insights, Discoveries and Encounters.

During the surprisingly short setup time of two and a half days, Pico teams

worked closely with the organiser and exhibitors and capably delivered 244

booths carefully crafted from 5,900 pieces of custom-created seamless panel.

Over 2,000 artists from Asia and further afield contributed paintings,

sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs and video; while discussions

and presentations created a platform for cross-cultural exchanges between

the artists and the visitors.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive

Mr CY Leung, and a celebrity and VIP preview kicked off the show in

fine fashion. The first edition of Art Basel was a huge success, attracting

60,000 guests, including patrons of major US and European art museums,

celebrated figures from the art world and established private collectors

from around the globe.

Pico’s years of mega event expertise were on display throughout 2013, as they successfully organised and managed a series of four events for Ferrari

China. Requiring numerous aspects of design, construction, event management and show production, these events tested our teams to the maximum

and they have produced stellar results every time.

After the success of the Ferrari Myth in 2012, Pico gained the trust of this valuable client, moving beyond just a design and fabrication provider to

becoming a close strategic partner that handles all their major events. Through this series of events, Pico broke new ground and won Ferrari’s hearts and

minds with our solid delivery, teamwork and professional execution.

Ferrari F1 Party in Shanghai

To mark the inauguration of the F1 Grand Prix China Circuit in Shanghai, Pico put on a warm-up party which created buzz to support the Ferrari F1

team and saying a big ‘thank you’ to the Ferrari dealers and owners.

Ferrari Racing Days in Shanghai

Held at Shanghai’s F1 circuit – home of Fernando Alonso’s Grand Prix victory – this event attracted over 10,000 die-hard Ferrari fans. There were numerous

entertainment and customer experience programs around the paddock, ranging from electric cars for kids to an F1 tyre change demonstration, stage

performances, plenty of food and drink and even a movie cinema screening at the hospitality suite, all of which brought the Ferrari lifestyle into sharp

focus for the visitors.

Ferrari’s 30th Anniversary in Hong Kong

To commemorate Ferrari’s 30th anniversary in Hong Kong as well as their long history and partnership with Auto Italia Ltd., 1,600 guests attended

this gala dinner. In attendance were the President of Ferrari, Mr. Luca di Montezemolo and the current Ferrari F1 test driver, Marc Gene, who unveiled

the latest 458 Speciale sports car. This was by far the biggest event Pico has ever done with Ferrari, and it was a roaring success.

Pico TBA was selected by Maserati to deliver a full turnkey solution including

audience generation, guest management, venue selection and experience

design for the successful launch of the new Quattroporte in China.

‘Life’s Gran Tour’ was the theme for the launch and the objective was to

create an extraordinary, luxurious experience for all participants, showcasing

Maserati’s heritage of performance, sophistication and style.

A stunning exhibition was created for guests to enjoy before the launch

ceremony, which provided the sales team with an excellent opportunity to

create conversations with the attendees and frame the new Quattroporte

in emotional terms. The result was an engaged and motivated audience

which ended up in encouraging sales orders within the day.

All aspects of the event, from the selection of the venue right through

to the creative programme and overall event execution, were handled by

the Pico TBA Team. The Quattroporte was to be Maserati’s flagship car

in China; and with the great importance placed on the vehicle, our team

was proud to have beaten competitors like of GPJ and Uniplan. This event

to our burgeoning reputation of delivering flawless launch events for

Pico have had an established track record in activating the Ferrari brand,

thus when it was time for the Singapore showroom to align itself with

Ferrari’s latest global corporate identity update, we were once again called

upon to get the job done. In order to undergo the facelift, the showroom

will have to be closed for an extended period of time. Taking into

consideration, the client’s reluctance at shutting down the showroom

completely, the Pico team built a temporary site for the interim period,

pulling it off under an extremely tight project timeline of two months.

Another challenge faced by the project team was the month-long Italian

August holiday break. With the bulk of the work occurring between July

and September, the Italian suppliers, principals and design house had to

be skillfully managed to meet the opening deadline of September 18,

2013. All design, layout and material orders were placed in advance to

prevent any major bottlenecks.

The design of this showroom was to be the first of its kind in the

world. As such, Pico had to source and stress test some of the fabrication

methods suggested by our Italian counterparts and in many cases,

suggest and implement new production techniques to reduce costs or

ensure a more robust product. Our professionals provided a full interior

renovation of the showroom, including hacking and demolition work,

wet work, M&E and interior carpentry and glasswork. Exterior work

included new branding, cladding works and flooring.

Despite the complexity and challenges, Pico lived up to its promise of

delivering fast, high quality, turnkey projects and in the process added yet

another successful activation of the famous prancing horse to our portfolio.

Held every 18 months in China, this is an essential conference for the

McDonald’s China leadership team. While Pico has been successfully producing

this event since 2005, the 2013 edition was particularly memorable as it

was the first time the 2,000 delegates from across China were able to meet

in Taiwan, a destination that McDonald’s management team had always

wanted to convene in, but were prevented from doing so by visa issues.

In the course of providing our end-to-end event management services for

this conference, the team worked closely with local authorities in both

China and Taipei to ensure that the near-2,000 visa applications would

be approved. This process took about two months, but was successful

and actually made headlines in Taipei!

Teams from three offices cooperated on this project – Pico offices in Beijing,

Taiwan and MP Shanghai handled design, provided on-the-ground

production and took care of the event management. Together, the teams

were responsible for creative strategy, design, program planning, visas,

transportation, accommodation, set production, show production,

entertainment, site-seeing, souvenirs and printing.

The complexity of the task, the level of cooperation and the success of

the spectacular conference itself made this an event to remember.

With 15,580 attendees, the show proved to be a valuable business platform for its exhibitors. A post event survey revealed that 95 percent of them were

impressed with the visitor traffic while 91 percent were satisfied with the business they generated onsite with total reported sales amounting to US$37.5M.

“The whole event, from ingress, show proper, up until egress, was well-organised. We commend the organisers for being prepared and responsive to

the needs of the exhibitors,” shared Plastmann Industrial Corporation. “This event gave us more leads by enabling us to meet potential clients. We

The hand-made Jaguar logos on the signage are a good example of this craftsmanship – with each one being hand-made using a complicated

In 1984, Volkswagen introduced its iconic Santana sedan to China. Now,

almost 30 years later, it has sold over four million units, becoming one

of the best-selling cars in the country’s history. To celebrate and publicise

the launch of the second-generation Santana model, Pico and Shanghai

Volkswagen decided to take the new car for a test drive. A lengthy one:

all the way from Germany to China – covering almost 20,000 km!

Under the slogan ‘The Power of Truth’, the 45-day transcontinental trip

The NEWater Visitor Centre is a comprehensive exhibition which

by Pico which highlights Singapore’s unique water cycle. Its purpose

is to educate the public about the four main ‘National Taps’ and the

processes that water goes through before it is ready for use. The Blue

Map is projected on an immersive 13m wide screen – using eight

projections seamlessly stitched together using projection mapping

techniques – which is activated when visitors find ‘Water Wally’, the

Pico TBA in Dubai were all-around winners with the Total Brand Activation Award this year for their work with Toyota at Dubai’s Sandance music

Helping Toyota become synonymous with live music events and getting the young target audience to see that ‘Toyota is cool & edgy’, Pico provided

signature activations on the master theme of each event, like Mardi Gras, Carnival and Moonlight. Keeping the energy and creativity levels high,

we have helped each successive Sandance event grow in size – at the recent October 2013 Sandance, there was a turnout of 16,000 people, and

the buzz continues to grow.
