Sporting Update

Football News On 23rd February the boys’ football team played a Champions League against Wickham Common. The boys put on a dominant display, thrashing our visitors by 10 goals to 1! Well done boys. On Wednesday 7th March the boys’ football team played another Champions League game against Crofton. The game started with Pickhurst taking an early advantage. The visitors were soon on level terms with a well taken goal by the Crofton forward. The game continued to be end to end but it was Crofton that were to score the next goal and lead by 2 goals to 1. The remainder of the game saw Pickhurst dominate the last 15 minutes. This came to fruition in added time when Charlie C chased down a long ball and slid it past the advancing keeper. It was the minimum the team deserved for the effort and endeavour they put into the game. Well done! On Friday 9th March the boys’ football team travelled to Redhill Primary for another league game. The boys dominated the game from start to finish on a tight pitch and won the game comfortably by 13 goals to 1. On Friday 16th March the girls’ football team played a Champions League game against Edgebury. The game started with Pickhurst camped in the opposition half. Pickhurst created chance after chance but it was only midway through the first half that Nancy R struck a great shot from the edge of the box that found the bottom corner to put us 1-0 up. The second half continued much the same as the first, with Edgebury offering no real threat but content on trying to keep the score respectable. Nancy R completed her hat trick and Madison J added a further goal as Pickhurst won the game by 4 goals to 0. The team are top of the league, unbeaten with 2 games to go. Well done girls! On Tuesday 20th March, having become champions of Bromley, the boys’ 6 a-side football team travelled to Redbridge to represent the borough in the London Youth Games Finals. Our first game was against St Mary and St Michael from Tower Hamlets. Although Pickhurst dominated the game, they failed to take any of their numerous chances and the game finished nil nil. Our second game was against St Joseph's from Westminster which proved to be a little bit closer but it was Pickhurst who scored the decisive goal to win by a goal to nil. Our final game in the group was against Western Park from Haringey, this game was to decide who would top the group and in a very closely contested game, it was Western Park who took a dubious early goal, but Pickhurst showed their fighting spirit and levelled the game with a well worked goal. Pickhurst had a couple more chances to win the game, but the Haringey goalkeeper pulled off a couple of great saves which kept the final score at 1-all which meant both boroughs progressed to the last 16 of the competition. Our first game in the last 16 was against a strong Hammersmith and Fulham team, Brackenbury. The boys played some excellent football and won the game by a goal to nil. Our second to last game was against Northbury school from Barking and Dagenham, again, the boys played extremely well and won the game by a single goal. Our final game of the last 16 was against Merryhills from Enfield and, although creating quite a few chances, the score remained goal-less, which saw Pickhurst the top of the group and booked a place in the quarter final. In the quarter final we were up against The Vineyard from Richmond; this game proved a close affair with both teams having chances to win but with both teams failing to score - the quarter final was to be decided on penalty kicks. Although the boys were nervous, it was Pickhurst who progressed to the semi finals with Danny A making a great save in the shoot out. In the semi final we were up against Haringey who we had played in our group and, although dominating the game, Pickhurst failed to take their goal scoring chances and the semi final went to penalties. Knowing that by winning the shoot out they would book themselves a final in the London Youth Games, the boys were so nervous and the Haringey goalkeeper pulled off a good save in the shoot out to deny us the chance of a place in the final.

Although the boys felt dejected after the shoot out, I couldn't have been more proud of their achievements to become the third best school out of 32 boroughs of London - which accumulates to over 4,000 schools. It is an unbelievable achievement and one the boys will be proud of for many years to come.

Sporting Update

On the following day, 21st March, the boys were back in action again in a Champions League game against Warren Road. The boys were visibly tired from the previous day’s exertions and it was Warren Road who took an early 2 goal advantage. Pickhurst showed great desire and determination and pulled a goal back just before half time. The second half started with Pickhurst on the front foot dominating the game by trying to get the equalising goal, but it was Warren Road who scored a goal against the run of play to lead by 3 goals to 1. Pickhurst didn't let their heads drop and continued to believe that they could still get back into the game. Five minutes later Ben R made that belief reality with a well taken goal. Pickhurst continued to dominate the last few moments of the game and had a great chance to score in the final minute but the shot was hit straight at the Warren Road goalkeeper. This was the first defeat of the season for the boys and I told them how proud I was of all their efforts, desire, determination and teamwork but on the day it was just one game too many in the week!

Mr Belgrave, Sports Coach Sport Relief We would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the children for participating in sporting challenges last week to raise awareness for Sports Relief. If you donated money, we appreciate your kindness for this worthy cause.

Cross Country Well done to all the pupils who took part in the Crystal Palace Cross Country Championships. All the children did really well and put their heart and soul into the race. Congratulations go to Yasmina S (3C) who came 6th out of 276 runners and to Kian F (3C) who came 8th out of 390 runners. This is a wonderful achievement! Spring School Diving Competition Olivia Jackson and Sam Dye both represented Pickhurst Academy in the Spring School Diving Competition on Sunday. Olivia came first in the Year 4 girls’ competition and Sam came second in the Year 5 boys’ competition. This is a fantastic achievement by Olivia and Sam and we are extremely proud of you both. Thank you for sharing this with us and keep up the good work!

Head Lice

There have been a couple of reports of head lice in school recently. Please make it a regular habit to check your child’s hair for head lice and treat if need be. Treatment is only really effective if EVERY

parent is vigilant in checking for head lice and treating appropriately.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Secondary School Allocation

We have now received the list of allocated secondary schools from the borough for our Y6 pupils.

If you are appealing your child’s allocated place or you believe the information we hold to be incorrect due to a late change, please advise the school office in order that your child’s records can be transferred to the correct

establishment at the end of the academic year.

Attendance & Punctuality 19th to 23rd March 2018

The overall attendance figure for Pickhurst Academy for this period was 95.77%. Forms 4M and 4O both achieved the best attendance possible this week with 100% each! This is fantastic! 53 lates were recorded. May we remind you that the school gates open from 8.30am and close at 8.50am so please ensure your child is punctual for the start of the day. Please note that each child’s attendance and punctuality rate is monitored on a regular basis. If it is seen that a child’s attendance or punctuality is below our expected requirement, then parents will be contacted either by letter or a mutually convenient appointment will be arranged to discuss the situation in order for us to offer support. If your child is not going to be in school, please leave a message on the academy answer phone on each morning of their absence, stating their name, class and the reason for their absence—thank you.
