COURSE OBJECTIVE COURSE CONTENTS LEARNING OUTCOMES UTMSPACE is a CLASS A Training Provider under PSMB (Reg. No 0902) UTM JOHOR BAHRU PIC MICROCONTROLLER 18 – 19 OCTOBER 2012 This two-day course aims to equip parcipants with the fundamental understanding and skills needed to construct and program a PIC microcontroller. During the hands-on session, parcipants are given opportunies to build and program their own PIC circuits from scratch, sharpen their programming skill in Assembly and C languages while unleashing their creavity in developing variety of programs. Elementary to intermediate projects such as motor control are introduced. Parcipants are also guided in datasheet interpretaon, circuit troubleshoong and components selecon. This course is one of the popular short courses in UTM conducted by an experienced robocist, Dr Yeong Che Fai. The course has previously been organised for lecturers, researchers and undergraduates from various universies, polytechnics and colleges naonwide, and has evolved over the years to provide an effecve plaorm for parcipants to learn about microcontroller via carefully designed hands-on tasks. Dr Yeong Che Fai is currently a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UTM. He graduated with PhD in Bioengineering from Imperial College London, in 2010. He has been teaching the microcontroller subject since 2003, and has experience with different types of microcontroller including ATMEL, Microchip PIC, Motorola, Philips and Arduino. His name is well-associated with robocs in Malaysia as he has parcipated and won many robocs compeons naonally and internaonally. He has been team instructor and team advisor for UTM Robocon team for 7 years. Dr Yeong has led the UTM/ Malaysian Robocon team to win naonal champion tles and represented Malaysia in the Asia-Pacific Robot contest in Thailand (2003), Korea (2004), China (2005), Malaysia (2006) and recently Thailand (2011). He has also won champion tles in naonal Robot Climb (2002 & 2004), Robot Grab (2004) and Robot Partner (2004) compeons. Besides his achievements in robocs, Dr Yeong also led several teams to Philips Young Inventors’ Challenge compeon and won the compeon two years in a row in 2004 and 2005. Both winning invenons were gadgets that ulized microcontroller. • To learn about the microcontroller using a hands-on approach • To construct basic circuit and program the microcontroller in Assembly and C language • To provide parcipants with the knowledge to construct their own embedded system in the future. • Have good understanding of microcontroller, specifically of PIC microcontrollers • Confidently construct and troubleshoot a PIC circuit for various applicaons, including for DC, stepper and servo motor control. • Program a PIC microcontroller using both Assembly and C language. • Interpret and use a datasheet effecvely. • Make wise selecon of components for opmum performance yet cost effecve PIC projects. • Interacve and hands-on approach in:- Learning to construct a PIC microcontroller system and program in both assembly and C language Circuit troubleshoong 15 tasks including controlling DC, Servo and Stepper motor using PIC. • Basic theorecal introducon to PIC microcontroller • Guide to interpreng and understanding datasheets • Applicaons of microcontroller • Robot Demonstraon

18 19 OCTOBER 2012This two-day course aims to equip participants with the fundamental understanding and skills needed to construct and program a PIC microcontroller. During the hands-on session, participants are given opportunities to build and program their own PIC circuits from scratch, sharpen their programming skill in Assembly and C languages while unleashing their creativity in developing variety of programs. Elementary to intermediate projects such as motor control are introduced. Participants are also guided in datasheet interpretation, circuit troubleshooting and components selection.

This course is one of the popular short courses in UTM conducted by an experienced roboticist, Dr Yeong Che Fai. The course has previously been organised for lecturers, researchers and undergraduates from various universities, polytechnics and colleges nationwide, and has evolved over the years to provide an effective platform for participants to learn about microcontroller via carefully designed hands-on tasks.

His name is well-associated with robotics in Malaysia as he has participated and won many robotics competitions nationally and internationally. He has been team instructor and team advisor for UTM Robocon team for 7 years. Dr Yeong has led the UTM/ Malaysian Robocon team to win national champion titles and represented Malaysia in the Asia-Pacific Robot contest in Thailand (2003), Korea (2004), China (2005), Malaysia (2006) and recently

Besides his achievements in robotics, Dr Yeong also led several teams to Philips Young Inventors Challenge competition and won the competition two years in a row in 2004 and 2005. Both winning inventions were gadgets that utilized microcontroller.

To learn about the microcontroller using a hands-on approach To construct basic circuit and program the microcontroller in Assembly and C language To provide participants with the knowledge to construct their own embedded system in the future.

Have good understanding of microcontroller, specifically of PIC microcontrollers Confidently construct and troubleshoot a PIC circuit for various applications, including for DC, stepper and servo motor control. Program a PIC microcontroller using both Assembly and C language. Interpret and use a datasheet effectively. Make wise selection of components for optimum performance yet cost effective PIC projects.

Interactive and hands-on approach in:- Learning to construct a PIC microcontroller system and program in both assembly and C language Circuit troubleshooting 15 tasks including controlling DC, Servo and Stepper motor using PIC. Basic theoretical introduction to PIC microcontroller Guide to interpreting and understanding datasheets Applications of microcontroller Robot Demonstration
