APS AWARD

The LeRoy Apker Award is for Undergraduate Physics Achievement. Two awards are presented each year, one to a student from a PhD granting institution and one to a student from a non-PhD granting institution. The award to the recipient(s) consists of $5,000, an allowance for travel to the meeting of the Society at which the award is being presented, and a certificate citing the work and school of the recipient. Six finalists are selected and they each receive an honorarium of $2,000 and a certificate as an Apker Award Finalist. Certificates and awards will also be presented to the Physics Departments whose nominees become finalists and recipients. The awards to the nominating Physics Departments will be $5,000 for the recipients and $1,000 for the finalists. See http://www.aps.org/programs/honors/awards/apker.cfm for eligibility and nomination procedures.

FUTURE OF PHYSICS DAYS TRAVEL AWARD

The Future of Physics Days (FPD) Travel award is for undergraduates presenting research at the APS March or April Annual Meetings. All presenting students are eligible for the award, which amounts to $1000 ($500 from APS with a guaranteed $500 match from the student’s physics department). In order to be eligible for this award, students must submit an abstract (as the primary author/presenter), and be registered for the meeting. They must also submit a signed statement from a research mentor that the funding is needed and will be used for travel, and a statement signed by the department chair guaranteeing matching funds. Recipients must also submit a short report summarizing their experiences at the meeting and their future plans. Travel award checks are dispersed at the Future of Physics Days Student Reception at the meeting, or mailed to the students afterwards. For more information on award requirements, deadlines, and a link to the application form, please visit our Future of Physics Days Travel Award page: http://www.aps.org/programs/education/undergrad/students/futurephysics/fpd2011/travelgrants.cfm.

INDIA-U.S. TRAVEL PROGRAM

The Physics Student Visitation Program, funded by the Indo-U.S. Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and APS, allows U.S. and Indian graduate students to apply for travel funds of $3,000 to pursue opportunities in physics. The travel funds could be used to attend a short-course or summer institute, to work temporarily in a laboratory, or for another opportunity that the student and the host professor believes is worthy of support. The program aims to mostly support graduate student travel to India by U.S. citizens, while enabling some students of Indian citizenship to travel to the United States. Recipients will be selected by a joint APS-IUSSTF Review Committee.

Further details about both programs, including proposal guidelines, are provided at www.aps.org/programs/international/

us-india-travel.cfm.

BRAZIL-U.S. PHYSICS STUDENT VISITATION PROGRAM

Through the Brazil-U.S. Physics Student Visitation Program, graduate students can apply for travel funds to pursue a breadth of opportunities in physics, such as: 1) attending a short-course or summer institute; 2) visiting with a professor in his/her field of study; 3) working temporarily in a lab; or 4) any other opportunity that the student and professor feel is worthy of travel support. Grants are for up to USD $3,000. This program is sponsored by the Sociedade Brasileira de Física (SBF) and the APS. Additional information about the program, including application guidelines, can be found at: http://www.aps.org/programs/international/programs/brazil.cfm.
