    Detail Outline

    1. Title Should the use of nuclear energy be encouraged?

    2. Introduction Demanding of energy increase rapidly- due to population growthrising standard of

    living

Depleting of non-renewal sources such as fossil fuels and natural gas. Nuclear energy Provide sufficient and reliable source of energyenvironmentally

    friendly- emits less greenhouse gases

Risk of using nuclear energy- dangerous storage of radioactive wastehigh cost ofbuilding nuclear facilitiesmay lead to disaster if nuclear accident occurs.

Leads to controversywhether nuclear energy should be encouraged.

    3. Physics relevance Nuclear energyreleased by the nucleus of Uranium in the reactorin the form of

gamma radiation, alpha and beta radiationknown as Radioactive Decay.

Nuclear fissionsmall uncharged particle- collide with large unstable Uranium atomsUranium atoms split and releasing energyHeat energy produced to heat up the

water until steam is formedsteam turn turbines which produces energy.

    4. Nuclear energy should be encouraged Clean Energy source

o Renewable- does not pollute the environmento Produces less than

carbon dioxide gas compared to coal and gas energy

    plant (Cravens 2008)

Reliable and Efficiento Produce greater amount of energy than non-renewable energy.o Generate high amount of energy compared to generating energy by burning

    of coal.

o Nuclear power plant has a life cycle of 40 years.5. Nuclear energy should not be encouraged

Possibility of nuclear accidentsoCaused by natural disasters or human mistakes(OHara, 2008)oLeakage of ionizing radiation- poses risk to human health and pollutes the

    environment (Cantoria, 2010).

Construction of nuclear power plant is costlyoInvestment for nuclear power plant up to 10 billion to 20 billion dollars

    (OHara, 2008)

oCost increase due to limited production of Uranium

oProper disposal of nuclear waste- require extra cost (OHara, 2008).

    6. Conclusion Should not be encouraged- expensivemay cause leakage of ionizing radiationpollute

    the environment

Alternative renewable sources Wind energy, solar energy to overcome energy crisis
