1. Overview

1.1. Scope

This manual applies to PHV series power supplies equipped with the LAN digital interface option. The manual applies to the LAN21 version of the interface that is based on the Lantronix X-Port device server.

1.2. Control Protocol

The power supply supports two methods of control via Ethernet:

1- direct communication on TCP/IP level (recommended)

2- indirect communication via a virtual COM port

Direct communication on TCP/IP level is recommended because typically no additional driver software is necessary on the control PC.

To enable LAN operation for existing software, driver software can be installed on the control PC. The driver software provides a virtual COM port (Redirector), which can behave like a real RS232 Port and allow the use of legacy software.

After installation of the driver software, if the virtual COM port is required it must be configured by the application software in the same way as a real COM port (baudrate and handshake setting).

2.1. Set up/configuration check

Depending on the user’s network, certain configuration settings are required.

The first step is to establish a connection to the interface converter:

Download the latest version of the DeviceInstaller program from the Lantronics Web Site using the link below;

http://ltxfaq.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/644

Unzip the downloaded file and run the Setup.exe program.

The program will check if Mircosoft .NET Framework and DeviceInstaller is installed on the user’s PC, click Install to continue.

2.1.1. Install Microsoft .NET Framework

If Microsoft .NET Framework is not installed, it will be installed first.

Accept Microsoft .NET Framework software License and click Install.

Microsoft .NET Framework installation can take as long as 30 minutes.

Complete the installation by clicking the Finish button.

Click to start the installation.

Now the DeviceInstaller program will be installed.

Once installation is complete Reboot the System! Otherwise, the DeviceInstaller will appear to run correctly, but will not find any devices!

2.1.3. Start DeviceInstaller

After installation is complete, find the DeviceInstaller executable in the Windows startmenu - Startmenu -> Lantronix -> DeviceInstaller X.X. and start the file.

If a Firewall warning appears, the program should not be blocked!

All devices found on the network will be displayed. If all devices are not displayed, you can restart the search with the Search button.

If more than one device was found, it can be distinguished by the Hardware address labeled on the X- Port converter.

If you want to have a specific IP- address, then click on the Assign a specific IP address button, and follow the instructions in the menu.

Select the next menu item Connection and set the parameters as shown. These are the parameters for communication between the interface converter and network.

Select OK when complete.

The command communication is set to Local Port 2101.

Select Apply Settings to store the settings permanently!

You can only see the changes at the Lantronix DeviceInstaller after a restart.

This configuration can also be changed via a standard web browser, if the IP address is known.

CAUTION

Be careful when connecting to a corporate network, because wrong or duplicate IP addresses can cause problems and prevent other PCs from network access!

If you are not familiar with network administration and configuration, we strongly recommend that you test the installation in a stand-alone network that is not connected to your corporate network!

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Set "Obtain IP address automatically" register the MAC address in your device server together with the IP address you want

to assign the power supply unit This ensures that you get always the same IP address without conflicts.

Now, communication can be immediately established via the IP address and port number that has been set. Please refer to "2.2 Communication check with HyperTerminal"

2.2. Communication check with HyperTerminal

Run the windows program HyperTerminal. Set connection to TCP/IP (Winsock)

Set the IP Address of the power supply and the port number. In this example, the port number was set to 2101 (see above).

Start the connection (telephone icon) and enter a “?” followed by Enter. The power supply responds with its serial number.

3. Indirect communication via a virtual COM port

To operate in this mode, driver software must be installed on the user’s computer. This driver simulates a virtual COM port that can be used like a real COM port. This enables existing legacy software that can communicate via RS-232, to communicate via LAN with the PHV power supply.

3.1. Installing the Com Port Redirector driver

Connect the power supply interface to the network with a LAN cable.

It is possible to directly connect the power supply to a computer but this may require a crossover cable.

Download the latest version of the Com Port Director (CPR) from the Lantronix web site –

https://www.lantronix.com/products/com-port-redirector/

Start the latest version of CPR and follow the instructions.

If you have previously installed the Microsoft .NET Framework, then the installer will start installing the CPR Installer. Confirm the following steps with .

18

83550110 Revision A

The installer will check and see if Microsoft .NET Framework is installed on your computer. If you haven’t installed Microsoft .NET Framework please refer to 2.1.1.

Choose the installation folder.

Select to start the installation

3.2. Virtual COM-Port configuration

After installation locate and start CPR Manager in Windows Startmenu -> Lantronix-> CPR. If a Firewall warning appears, the program must not be blocked!

All installed Com-Ports are shown in the window on the left side.

Create a new Com-Port with the Add/Remove button. Now you can choose any free Com-Port.

You can search all connected devices with the Search for Devices button. Connected devices are shown in the Device List window. There you can also check the IP- Address and the Hardware Address.

Next step is to right click on the device and select Add to Settings.

Next step is to complete the settings in the Settings tab.

Once the settings have been completed, they must be saved with the Save button.

After saving the settings, 2 programs for the Com-Ports will be installed. The user may need to confirm installation of these 2 programs in windows.

4. Analog to Digital/Digital to Analog module settings

The LAN interface is factory configured and typically no setting changes are necessary.

For maximum speed, the register >CKT 0 is factory programmed to set the default terminator as CR+LF. The Lantronix device server triggers on this byte combination and does not wait for the 12ms timeout to elapse.

The other terminators can be used, but the response time will be significantly increased.

The Baud rate is 230kBd, register >CBAUD 5.

The interface converter is based on the standard device server Lantronix X-Port.

Driver updates for new operating systems as well as further information can be obtained from http://www.lantronix.com/device-networking/embedded-device-servers/xport.html
