To get there from Nai Harn Beach, start from The Royal Phuket Yacht Club Hotel and drive pass Ao Saen to the end of the road where you will see Baan Krating Hotel. There will be a narrow path on the left that leads to the beach.

Among Phuket Island’s myriads of attractions, there is a quiet spot at the tip of Laem Krating (or as the locals call “Plai Laem”) where those who seek tranquility can enjoy time away from the crowd. It is also a nice place to witness the sun setting beyond the horizon.

Afterwards, we trekked up hill to Laem Krating to get a glimpse of the 360 degree view that everyone was raving about.

The narrow path we took was lined with tall grass that swayed to the rhythm of the wind. That, along with the backdrop of the Andaman Sea made me think of the song, “….the beautiful sea, with boats sailing by and the blue sky above…la la la”.

The steep incline was only a minor challenge. And as we reached the tip, the view that lay ahead was every bit as beautiful as we had heard. The glorious sun was shining its ray onto the water, reflecting wave after wave of shimmering gold. How we wished for this moment to last forever.

We sat around gingerly, letting the hands of time turn slowly while we thought about the wise words of the great Vietnamese Zen Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, who said “Live life slowly, look upon all things with loving eyes”. So we sat back and waited for the last ray of light to leave the darkening sky.

The 20-25 minute journey takes passengers through scenic views of the lush mangrove forest and limestone cliff shaped like a dog in lying position. This dog cliff with bushy tail is called Mah Ju Island.

In just a short while, the long-tailed boat reached the sign that says “Welcome to Koh Panyee”. We made an appointment to meet up with the boat driver in a few hours and set off with camera in hand.

Both sides of the street are lined with vendors selling souvenir items. We especially like the pearl jewelry that were so reasonably priced and dried shrimp chili paste that our folks at home love so much.

Walking along the concrete road, we came across parts that were still made of wood. Following the path left and right had led us to the Panyee Darusalam Mosque which was recently built in place of the old one.

The show started with colorful Macaws marching out one by one. Each was trained to perform tricks like raising the flag and tossing the dice. If they added a wrong number, they would be shot then fall on their back pretending to be dead. This act always gets roaring laughter from the audience.

Other fun acts by birds include cycling on a wire, picking up cans to put in the trash, adding or subtracting numbers, and sometimes the audiences would be invited to participate.

The next performances were by Hornbills followed by Red Eagles who swooped through loops and ate food from audiences’ hands. Some of the smaller birds performed funny dance moves; everyone was kept amused and entertained to the end.

Today, we will travel to Lipe Island located in the south of the Andaman. So, we drove the car from Phuket to Pak Bara Port in Satool Province (Phuket-Phang-nga-Krabi-Trang-Langu); the journey took about five hours.

From Pak Bara Port, the speed boat ride took about an hour and a half. We chose to make a stop at Tarutao Island first to pay respects to the God of Tarutao at his shrine and strolled around Tarutao’s National Exhibition Center.

From Tarutao, we went further to Kai Island which is the symbol of Satool Province. We could see couples walk-ing through the large stone columns and out through the small ones as it is believed to bring them everlasting love.

We transferred from speed boat to long-tailed ones for the journey to Lipe Island. There are many beautiful beaches here including the long, white Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach with rows of coconut trees and the best place to enjoy the sunrise, and Sunset Beach which is small but nice and quiet.

For the afternoon, we chose to spend it on a taxi which comes in the form of sidecar. The fee is 50 baht per person or 300 baht for the whole vehicle per hour. After an afternoon of fun, we came back to our lodging to enjoy watching the mellow sunset.

On the second day, everyone was quite excited at the pros-pect of going snorkeling. The area is known for its beautiful coral reefs and abundance of fish species. We took the boat around Hin Ngam Island where there is no beach but only black, shiny rocks. The water is amazingly clear here.

At Hin Son Island, we could see two giant boulders nestled against each other. Next, we went to Sai Khao Beach (Rawi Island) which was serene, clean and has a gorgeous white beach and clear water.

At Tong Island (Kamnan Beach), we loved the quiet atmosphere and powdery sand. The highlight was the 7-color coral reef which was one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever seen. We took the boat out at eight in the morning and came back at five; still we swam some more in front of the hotel until dark.

After everyone was ready, the journey began. Several elementary and high school students from various institutions also came to participate in the event. In only fifteen minutes, our speed boat, operated by Nikorn Marine, reached “Koh Hay” or Coral Island. We separated ourselves into groups and the opening ceremony started with a speech by Mr. Pisit Prapakityosapat, Chairman of Nikorn Marine Co., Ltd. And Ms. Wanprapa Suksomboon, Assistant Director of TAT, Phuket Office.

Participants who are certi-fied divers brought the models of coral nursery to the ocean floor. The divers all agreed that it was a great preventative method in coral preservation as marine life in the area was still abundant and vibrant.

On a hot day like this, it is common to get diarrhea so it is advisable to drink plenty of water and eat lots of vegetables. My mother used to cook us porridge (boiled rice) when we were young because it is good for the digestive system. Here in Phuket, we would eat it with side dishes that are unique to the area.

Today, our Phuket E-Magazine team of staff is in the mood for some boiled rice with fish, so we are cooking up some fish marinated in bean curd. This menu has a mixture of flavors like salty, sweet and tangy from ginger which goes really well with boiled rice. This combination is good to have during hot weather because ginger has medicinal property which helps with digestion.

We bought our fish from the market and our choice for today is the Mok fish. This fish is not commonly served in restaurants nor is found in the Gulf of Thailand, only in the Andaman Sea.

ปลาเตาเจยวแบบทคนภเกตเราทานดงเดม มเครองปรงดงนคะ ปลา เตาเจยว กระเทยมสบ ขงหนฝอย นำามะขามเปยก นำามน นำาตาล นำา พรกขหน

To cook it Phuket style, you will need fish, bean curd, chopped garlic, minced ginger, tamarind juice, oil, sugar, water and fresh chili.

Fry the fish in hot oil until cooked, let cool and slice in diagonal pieces. Pour out the oil from the pan, leaving just enough to cover the surface.

นำากระเทยมกบขงลงเจยวพอหอม ใสเตาเจยว เตมนำามะขามเปยกและนำา ตดรสดวยนำาตาล พรกขหน “ปลาเตาเจยว” แบบทเราทานในครอบครว จะไมนำานำาเตาเจยวมาราดปลานะคะ แตจะใสปลาลงในกะทะนำาเตาเจยว ตงใหเดอดพอใหนำาซมเขาเนอปลา ตกเสรฟคะ!

Fry the garlic and ginger then add bean curd. Add tamarind juice and water, then a bit of sugar and chili to taste. Some like to pour the sauce over the fish but here in Phuket, we let the sauce seep into the fish right in the pan for even better taste.

The Baba Wedding Festival of Phuket is fast approaching so we decided to pay our good friends Khun Sukanya and Dr. Kosol a visit. Hopefully, they will be able to tell us more about the Baba style of wedding and the history of Peranakan Association.

Dr. Kosol told us that the Peranakan Association was formed eight years ago in 2006 by native successors of Phuket. The objective is to preserve and encourage Thai, Chinese and Malay traditions for later generations.

Thus, the association began to revive Phuket’s Baba style of wedding that was practiced since the time when Phuket was still a tin mining area.

During June 21st to 23rd, the Peranakan Association will organize the 6th Baba Wedding Festival where couples from every corner of the world are welcome to join. The association has arranged a 3-day/ 2-night package for two at the price of 39,900 THB. This is an all inclusive rate so couples need not worry about what to bring.

Dr. Kosol also invites both Thai and overseas visitors to be a wit-ness in the beautiful tradition and take part in the “Khan Mak” procession done in the unique and traditional Baba style.
