Born July 15, 1952 (age 62) in Danville, Pennsylvania, United States.
Balog is a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers and a Sustainability Ambassador for The North Face. His work revolves around the relationship between humans and nature. Because of this, a lot of his work is featured on National Geographic.
He has won 11 awards for his work, including the World Press Photo Awards for Nature and Science & Technology, and NANPA Outstanding Photographer of the Year.
He has released 8 books, about endangered animals, climate change and forests.
