  • 1. Experimental photographers and photographs Hannah Richards

2. Heitor Magno Heitor Mango is an experimental photographer who likes to use double exposure and replaces the faces of his models with different things such as scenery, fire and smoke. I especially like this image of a woman who has had her face replaced by pink flowers, I think it is a very stylish and modern technique and looks very good when done right, we can still make out that it is a womans face by the features such as the nose and the chin. The techniques he has used include double exposure and also out of focus photography because the image is a little blurry. I would categorise this photograph and the rest of his photographic work as non-traditional because it is very independent and different from most photographers work and that of other photographers who use this same technique, I would also put it in this category because it looks artistic and abstract. I would also categorise this particualr photograph as contemporary because of what the subject is but I think the technique he has used could also be used to create a historical photograph and I think a photograph like this would most likely be found in small galleries or in modern fashion magazines to promote a new fashion range or story on a particualr person such as this image which was used in a fashion magazine to promote a new line of clothing and also to promote the designer who was modelling the clothes and giving the interview. 3. Props: The props they have used in this photograph is mainly part of the second photograph which is an image of the flowers, the use of this prop has been used very well to convey to the audience the theme and possibly the personality of the model which could also be the theme of the photograph. I also think that the photographer has used the models hair as a prop too again to convey the theme or the personality because it has been styled in a very simple, smart and clean way.Theme: Overall the theme for this photograph could be a number of things, it could be a theme of the season which would be summer or spring because of the photograph of the brightly coloured flowers used and the fact that the models hair is tied up which insinuates that the weather is hot. The theme could also be a representation of the models personality or the photographers personality because of the techniques they have used because we cannot see the models face so we cannot see her expression but the other photograph shows that their personality could be quite bright and happy.Colour: The colour of this photograph is very important because I think the theme of this photograph is the personality and characteristics of the model or possibly the photographer, the colours used in this photograph show this theme very well because they have used very bright colours which represents happiness and friendliness but they have also used pale colours which could have been used to make the bright colours stand out more but they could also have been used to convey the personality of being sad or lost as if the pale colours represented fog.Technique: The techniques they have used in this photograph include double exposure and out of focus, the double exposure technique allows the photographer to take two separate images and layer them together to get a result like this photograph, they have done this here by removing the models face and replacing it with a photograph of flowers. They have also used an out of focus technique because the photograph is slightly blurred. 4. Katie Hosmer Katie Homer is a traditional formal photographer who also likes to create images based on experimental photography, scanography in particular. This image stood out to me because of the techniques she has used the way the image looks, because the models hair is laying on the scanner it looks as if she in underwater and the use of the props created a good effect too because it gives the image a theme and also gives it colour. There are a number of techniques such as out of focus and mainly scanography, I also think that the flowers are more in focus than the model which gives and interesting effect. I would categorise this image as non-traditional because this technique is very different from any other photographic technique and this particular scan is very abstract, I would also categorise it as contemporary again because it is different and abstract but also because most scanography photographs can be categorised as fine art and would see it in abstract galleries orto be used in advertising, an example of scanography used in advertising is an image used for the golfing company Wilson who scanned this image to create an individual effect from other company adverts to promote their products. 5. Props: The use of props in this photograph are very interesting because it tells the audience a lot about what the theme of the photograph is, the photographer has used a collection of flowers and leaves to portray the theme of weather on a whole or one season in particular, I think they have also tried to incorporate the hair into the scan as a prop to show the weather theme.Colour: Colour is one of the main aspects of this photograph because it communicates with the audience what the theme is by representing the season because of the colour of the leaves and the models skin and the colour of the flowers which also resemble the season and also brighten the photograph a little bit and make it more appealing and eye catching to the audience.Theme: The theme for this photograph I think is based on weather or on a particular season, I think the photographer has tried to capture autumn because of the use of props and the model, I think this because they have used brown leaves which indicates that the leaves are falling off the trees and that it is becoming colder and developing into winter, I also think this because of the way they have positioned the models hair as if it were a windy season. The colour of the models skin could also resemble autumn because she has quite tanned skin as summer has just passed.Technique: For this photograph the photographer has chosen to use scanography for their technique, I think this always gives the photograph a very interesting effect and creates an abstract theme no matter what the theme is. I also think that this photograph is out of focus which also gives it an abstract and artistic effect. 6. Daniel Barreto Daniel Barreto is an experimental photographer who likes to play with light and movement in his work. This image that I found was the most interesting because it includes so many different aspects and techniques. First of all he has used both light and movement to create this image and the result makes it look like ghosts or spirits in the woods, I also like that the tree in the middle is still in focus and still visible. I would categorise this image as non-traditional again because of the techniques he has used and also because they are similar to the last two photographs in the sense that it is abstract and very different from many other styles of photography I also think I would class it as non-traditional because if the methods he has used to create it because it was created by using non natural light sources, I would aslo class it as a contemporary again because of the techniques and the fact that the photographer has chosen the subject of ghost which could link into the photograph being historical but the techniques and the way he has created the image I think categorise it as contemporary would find it mainly in abstract galleries and on adverts or possibly used on a film poster, an example of light trail photography used on an advert is this image which depicts a line of traffic with a light trail going through it representing the vespa bike as if to say that buying the bike will allow you to cut traffic, the light trail technique also symbolises that the product may be fast because the camera is not able to capture it. 7. Technique: The technique mainly used in this photograph and a collection of other photographs created by the same photographer is light trail which can be produced using a source of light and a slow shutter speed in order to capture the moving light. I think that the photographer has used this technique because it is the best when creating photographs that are made to look abstract and artistic, I think the photographer has taken an artistic tun on the ghost theme by using this technique.Props: There are very few props used in this photograph but the ones that have been used include the sources of light and the tree in the middle, I think these props are important to convey the message of the theme across because they help to create the image, the light sources help to create the light trails and the tree in the middle helps to pronounce the ghostly theme because of the way the flash from the camera has lit it up or the light sources around it have.Theme: The theme for this photograph is very clearly based around ghosts and spirits because of the technique used and the props the photographer has used. They have clearly conveyed the theme using the right lighting too because the tree in the centre of the photograph has been lit up perfectly to create scary looking scene a long with the ghostly light figures around it which could insinuate that it is haunted.Colour: I think the colours used in this photograph are very dark compared to the two previous photographs but the darker colours help to bring out the light ghostly white and blue colours, I think these dark colours have been chosen because of the theme, ghosts and spirits are commonly linked to death and horror which is seen as a dark subject, I think the colours also portray the thee very well because they bring out the ghostly figures because they have used bright colours for those parts of the photograph.
