MOMENT FOR REFLECTIONChristianity has never been a passive faith. The faith is not something that we simply and only believe in, and then sit and wait passively to see how life unfolds. Jesus didn’t call for believers, but for disciples, for people who walk the walk that he walked, and not just take his word for things. Today we look at a key moment in the gospel of Matthew when Jesus sent out into the world the twelve disciples that he had called. “As you go” he told them, “proclaim the good news,

‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.” It unnerves us to think about what these words might mean for us, his contemporary disciples. We suspect that we are called to do more than simply believe that he said these things to them all those years ago. But what might it mean for us to cure the sick or raise the dead?

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Paul ShupeMatthew 9:35-10:8

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

Build Community in a Diverse World

Anti-Racism Small GroupsWould you like to further explore what it means to become anti-racist? Are you interested in being part of a small group that helps each other learn and grow in our own awareness of what it means to be allies to our black, indigenous, people of color sisters and brothers? These would be informal, non-judgmental, low-pressure groups, where, as we grow and learn, we can

grow together in order to create a more just and equitable world. If you are interested in this, please reach out to Barbara ([email protected]). Thanks so much!

Immigrant and Refugee JusticeHancock’s Immigrant and Refugee Justice Team has launched a Google Group to facilitate the sharing of information, questions, and ideas among the Hancock community about immigrant and refugee issues. It functions like a listserv; you can post information or questions to the group and everyone who

is a member will see it, and they can reply and continue the conversation. If all you want to do is read the conversations without posting yourself, that’s fine too; there’s no obligation to participate. (If you’re familiar with the HEAT Google Group we’ve had for many years, it will function like that.) To receive an invitation, or if you have any questions, write [email protected].

We ask you to reflect on the questions asked, to help us prioritize among the leadership characteristics we have identified, and to indicate what we may have missed.

The Building Reopening Committee is hard at work determining how and when we will be able to start using our building once more. One of the things we will need is masks to hand out to anyone who comes without one. We are looking to make a basketful of cloth masks in adult, youth, and children sizes so that anyone who needs one can use

it at church and then take it home to reuse. I have patterns, cloth, elastic, and thread for anyone that has time to make a few for Hancock over the next two months. If you have the time and inclination to help with this project, please contact [email protected] for the pattern and any other supplies you need.

interfaitH garDen UpDate

Opening Season 11 at the Interfaith Garden collided with the state shutting down from COVID-19. Initially the Garden was closed to most volunteers with necessary work to prep and plant done by Carla, our head farmer, and a few regulars. This allowed organizers time to establish new protocols with the objective to keep all participants

safe and healthy. One outcome is that fewer volunteers work at a time so it is easier to physically distance from one another. Currently, the Garden is operating with about 25% of the usual number of weekly volunteers. During this period, the Garden has found its own pace and flourished… albeit with maybe more weeds than usual! Nonetheless, Carla has been making deliveries to the Lexington Food Pantry since early May.

The new schedule slowly rolls volunteers back into the Garden on a regular basis. That means that faith communities, like Hancock, are working in the Garden about once per month. If you are interested in helping, please contact Amy Swanson at [email protected]

Several Hancock members have generously donated games, books, DVD's, a ping-pong table, an air hockey table, a pinball machine and more as entertainment supplies for the residents of Place of Promise. The Mission & Justice Team is delivering them this Saturday, just in time for them to

also be used by the Kids of Promise summer program for kids in the neighborhood. Many thanks to all the donors!

lUncHes fOr OUtDOOr cHUrcH Of caMbriDge: yOU can Help!We are providing 40 lunch bags every other Sunday for homeless folks who participate in the Outdoor Church in Cambridge. During the year Hancock middle school youth [JYO] make sandwiches and put together lunch bags once a month to be delivered to the Outdoor Church. Until we can all be together again at Hancock, Hancock adults are stepping up to

provide these Outdoor Church lunch bags, now every other week. With COVID, the need for food is even greater. We are working with Hancock youth to write notes to include in the lunch bags. How can you help? Help is needed for lunch bags for 7/5, 7/19, 8/2, 8/16, 8/30, 9/13. Are you interested in making 20 sandwiches? Or providing granola bars or water or cookies or fruit for each lunch bag? Sandwiches and other items are brought to the Hancock parking lot 7:20 a.m. on the designated Sunday morning. We assemble (with face masks, gloves, and social distancing) the lunch bags, which are then picked up and taken to the Outdoor Church. If you are interested in helping with the Outdoor Church lunches, please contact Daryl Battin (781-789-3763 / [email protected]), who will coordinate a schedule for the lunch bag contributions. Also contact her if you have lunch bag items to contribute which need to be picked up. Thank you so VERY much for your help – these lunches are an essential part of the day for Outdoor Church attendees. Another way you can help is with donation funds for the supply disposable face masks, for brown paper lunch bags, for $5 Dunkin Donut gift cards, for the granola bars and waters included with the Outdoor Church lunch bags. Donations for the Outdoor Church can be made to Hancock Church by check or online; please specify “Outdoor Church” on a check or in the comment field for online donations. Thank you again!

We welcome all who seek to know God.

We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ.

We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences.

We recognize and love each individual as a child of God.

We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental

ability to join us on our journey of faith.

The faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed,

for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity.

As Paul wrote in Galatians, “In Christ there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one...”
