Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages

are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.

Before Mass

If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the

Church entrance (narthex).

As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship.

In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times.

Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.

Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the

church on the opposite side to the entrance.

Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the

service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make

an appointment.

The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the

Mass.

The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to

those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also

customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and

prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.

A Reflection

‘I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me.’ In these words it is as if

our Lord were saying: ‘Those who love me, obey me.’ Certainly, those who do not love the truth

cannot yet know it.

My dear brothers and sisters, let us reflect upon how these words of our Lord imply a test of our

own. Ask yourselves first if you are indeed sheep of Jesus; and secondly, if you know him and

recognize the light of truth. We recognize truth not simply by faith but by love. You recognize

truth not by the assent of the intellect, but by the love you express in your deeds. As the apostle

John says: ‘Those who say that they love God, but disobey his commandments, are liars.

Jesus goes on to add the following words: ‘My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and the

follow me, and I will give them eternal life.’ A little earlier he said also: ‘If any enter by me, they

will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.’ That is to say, they will go in by faith, and

go out from faith to vision, from belief to contemplation, and will find pasture in the eternal

banquet God has prepared.

The Lord’s sheep will find the Lord’s pastures. Those who follow Christ with an undivided heart

will be nourished in pastures that are forever green. And what are such pastures if not the most

profound joy of feeding in the everlasting fields of paradise? For the pasture of the saints is to see

God face to face. When the vision of God never fades, the soul is filled with an abundance of

food for eternal life.

And so dear friends, let us seek these pastures and join the throng of the citizens of heaven. Let

their happiness and celebration be an invitation to us. Let our hearts grow warm; let our faith be

rekindled; let our desire for the things of heaven increase; for to love in this way is indeed to be

on the way.

We should allow no misfortune to distract us from this happiness and deep joy; for if you are

determined to reach the destination of your spiritual journey the roughness of the road will not

deter you. Nor should the delights of material prosperity in this life ever entice you astray; only

the foolish traveler, spotting a pleasant field on the way, forgets that he is en route to a greater

destination.

Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas.

She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died.

When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near

Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the

request, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and went with them; and

when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him,

weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was

with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned

to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she

Formation on Sundays

THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION:

THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN POETRY

As we all know, the gospels relate the history and facts of our Salvation by God through the

Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of our Lord. All four versions of Jesus’s life come down

to us as prose narratives, and it is through that medium that we learn His “good news.”

Throughout the centuries, writers have employed other kinds of language and literary form as

they contemplate the meaning of Christ’s teaching and Sacrifice. Poetry, in particular, may

provide a different access to spiritual truth, one that seems intuitive and emotional rather than

rational. As a literary and linguistic form, poetry offers an alternative language through which

we can experience and reflect on God’s message. Over the next five Sundays of Eastertide, we

will read and discuss modern and contemporary poems as we construct an imaginative and

impressionistic Salvation narrative. Through selected poetry, our series of church and guest

speakers will explore the Annunciation of Christ, His ministry, the Passion of our Lord, the

Resurrection, Christ’s Ascension into Heaven, and Pentecost. Please come. Learn about poets

perhaps unfamiliar to you and enrich your experience of Easter this spring.

On May 19, we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, which, in the Church,

commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The account of Pentecost

is found in Acts 2:1-21. In Christian faith, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy

Trinity. What are the roots of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit: in scripture, in tradition, and

in reason or experience? How does the Holy Spirit relate to the other persons of the Trinity,

the Father and the Son? What is the work of the Holy Spirit in us?

MOTHER JESSICA

Mother Jessica has resigned her position as

Assistant Priest at St. James’. After a period of

discernment she has decided that this is the time for

her to conclude her ministry here and we give

thanks to God for her shared ministry with us in the

parish. On her last Sunday at St. James’ a celebration

of ministry will take place after High Mass on June

2. Your prayers for Mother Jessica, Harry, and

Madeleine as she discerns her next step in ministry

in the diocese are much appreciated.

MAKE A MOTHER’S DAY

Once again the St. James’ Mothers’ Union is holding

the Make a Mother’s Day ethical giving campaign

during the weeks of April until Mother’s Day, May

11. This is our annual campaign to support our

global programs, Literacy $ Financial Education

(MULFEP), Family Life (MUFLP) and Parenting

(WWPP) and the Relief Fund. Many of you do not

have a mother still alive, but you may wish to buy a

gift in memory of her, or purchase a gift for a needy

African mother who does not have the means to

feed her family. All the gifts are designed to help the

recipients improve their standard of living, become

independent and provide for themselves. Nearly all

of the 8 gifts are under $50.

Start a Journey $25

Learning to write your name is an exciting time for

most children. Imagine the feeling you would get

learning to read and write as an adult. Something as

simple as reading a prescription can save a life. In

order to take part in this campaign please pick up a

catalogue and order form from the Narthex and

return with your cheque, made out to the Canadian

Mothers’ Union, to the MAMD deposit box or

directly to Celia Dodds. Your gift card and taxable

receipt will be delivered to you as soon as possible.

candidates from St. James’ will be making their

promises, takes place next Sunday, April 28th.

YouthWorks, an organization that provides

Christian youth with opportunities for service, will

be using our crypt as a base of operations this

small projects, such as gardening or yard work that

A parishioner who has just moved into the

Boundary-Hastings area (North Burnaby)

is looking for a ride to High Mass on Sundays.

GENDER STUDIES CERTIFICATE

Trinity Western University (TWU) is thinking

about offering a 15-credit Gender Studies

Certificate. (four 3-credit courses on gender and

one 3-credit supervised practicum). Before

offering such a certificate, the university and the

TWU Gender Studies Institute wants to know if

there is sufficient interest in it. The survey is
