Protectors Anti-Bullying Show On Thursday 28 March all students watched ‘The Protectors Anti-Bullying’ theatre show. Students said they enjoyed the show and learnt some great strategies about how to deal with bullying. The show gave students concrete solutions to practise to protect themselves from hurtful comments and negative behaviours they may encounter in the playground.
NAPLAN Testing This week and next week, students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be participating in an Online NAPLAN practise test so they have an understanding of how the platform works. NAPLAN Testing for students in Years 3 and 5 will commence on Tuesday 14 May 2019 (Term 2 Week 3). A notification letter advising parents of the dates and reasons for exemption has been sent home and is available on the school’s website. Parents who wish to exclude their child/children from these tests should make an appointment to speak to me so they can complete and sign the consent form. The school will not advise parents to exclude their children. However, if parents have particular concerns, the teachers and I are happy to discuss these concerns and advise parents of their options. For more information about NAPLAN online please see link below. NAPLAN online Parent Information
Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Feedback Survey Years 5 and 6 This term, our school, like many other public schools in the State, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 1 April and 5 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey has been sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 29 March 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the following link: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
Easter Hat Parade for Kindergarten and Year 1 Parents and friends are invited to attend the Kindergarten and Year One Easter Hat Parade on Friday 12 April in the Courtyard. At 1pm parents are invited to have a picnic lunch with their child in the bottom playground and the Hat Parade will commence at 1:45pm. All students will be making and decorating their own Easter hat at school. Both Kindergarten and Year One will make their hats with their buddy and this will provide a great opportunity for students to show creativity and work together. There is no need to purchase craft items as decorating materials will be supplied by the school.
P & C News Our P & C is holding its annual Easter Egg Raffle. We are asking for families to donate some Easter eggs for prizes. Donations can be handed into the school office or your child’s class teacher. All families will have a book of raffle tickets to sell. Prizes will be drawn during morning assembly in Week 11 from Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April.

Our Week with Lori – Class 2J
This year, World Poetry Day was celebrated on Thursday, 21st March. Students from class 6G discussed and
wrote some poems about Harmony Day.
Diamante poem by Jorga 6G
Poem by Amy 6G
Harmony day is a day
Were we can share and play
We all have fun even though we are all different
We all different in every way
Harmony day is a day to celebrate
Harmony day is a day about peace
Don’t break the promise
Harmony day
Skin, land, race, religion, all
something we don’t have in common
But we all link hands and sing as we
say “let there be peace on harmony
day”
Those with ideas are labelled as
dreamers, being put down without
the lift of a finger.
But don’t put others down when
they say “let there be peace on
harmony day.”
Don’t smirk or laugh when we all say,
“let there be peace on harmony
day.”

PBL Update – Sandpit and COLA
The sandpit is a sun
safe place to play in
the K and Year 1
playground for those
children who don’t have
a hat. This week
students are talking
about how to show our
school values when they
are playing in this
area.
The COLA is an area for
students in Years 2-6 to
finish eating and play
quietly if they have
forgotten their school
hat. In classes students
are talking about the
games that they can
safely play there.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Change and loss are issues all of us face at some stage of our lives. At Kariong Public School we
recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related
circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.
We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons For Growth. This
program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of
social support and the need to practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The
program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision making,
effective communication and support networks.
Seasons For Growth runs for 8 weeks in school hours and each weekly session is 40-45 minutes. The
program concludes with a ‘celebration’ session. Later in the year each group will have the
opportunity to meet for a further session to build on their earlier learning. There is no cost involved.
Seasons For Growth will commence in Week 5 Term 2 for years 1-6. If you think your son or
daughter would benefit from this program, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about this.
Should he/she decide to participate, please fill in the form attached and return to the office by
Monday 13th May. Please also include a brief reason for participation eg divorce, death etc.
If you require further information or have any questions please contact me at school on 4340 1885.
Kariong Public School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident
that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
