Next week, we will take a short four day break for Easter before returning to school for nine days until the end of Term 1.

It will be in that nine day period that we will trial the new student pick up arrangements after school at Mahers Lane. I encourage you to carefully read the information about the changes and ask for your support when we implement them. The key purpose is to ensure the safety of the children.

For an Anglican school it is important to remind ourselves that Easter is the greatest feast in the Christian calendar. On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead following his suffering and death on the cross on Good Friday. Easter Sunday comes at the end of 40 days of Lent, a time of prayer and reflection.

The timing of Easter coincides with the coming of Spring in the northern hemisphere and, in fact, the word Easter comes from the name of a pagan spring festival. In our western culture the rabbit and eggs are very much symbols of Easter as they are symbols of fertility and new life. Easter eggs, chocolate or otherwise, are a symbol also of the new life for Christians as a result of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

At both the Sunshine Avenue and Mahers Lane Campus, there will be a service to commemorate Good Friday conducted by Reverend Chad.

To all members of the Lindisfarne community I wish you the joy of the Easter season.

Almighty God, who through your only begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life. From the ChaplainReflections for LentNext Tuesday 22 March, our regular Period 4 Assembly at the Mahers Lane Campus will be replaced with an Easter Service to mark one of the most significant and holy events on the Christian calendar. Likewise, at the Sunshine Avenue Campus on Thursday 24 March, we will hold a special Easter Chapel Service in the undercover area at 11.00am.

During both services, students will hear parts of the Easter story and reflect on the meaning of those events for the people of Jesus’ time, and their potential meaning and significance for our time.

Easter is so much more than simply a long weekend. Easter can have so much more meaning than just remembering what happened in Jerusalem a couple of thousand years ago. Jesus overcame trial, persecution and death in order to bring love and hope to people who were starved of both.

I would hope that we could be encouraged by the example of Jesus, who went through such adversity for the sake of love. As we meet next week to reflect on the Easter story, I hope and pray that it might encourage us all to respond to life’s challenges with grace and love; with compassion, wisdom and respect.

Parents and friends of the Lindisfarne community are welcome to attend either of these celebrations next week.

May you all have a happy and holy Easter break.

LINDISFARNE ANGLICAN GRAMMAR SCHOOL newsThe

Since the start of the year there has been a significant increase in the volume of parents collecting their children after school from the Mahers Lane Campus. The safety of our students is paramount, as such we are going to trial some changes to the parking and student pick-up areas in an effort to continue to ensure the safety of our students. We need your support to do this.

A trial system similar to the passenger collection area of the Coolangatta Airport will see the introduction of a ‘No Stopping Lane’ combined with an extension to the student collection area. These trial measures combined with barriers to separate students and vehicles, and new road marking and signage, should address the increased flow of traffic in a safe and effective manner.

To assist with these changes we need your support in the following ways;

· Please do not leave your vehicle when collecting your child in this area;· Please only stop to collect your child in the designated area;· Please follow the directions from staff to move along should you be in the designated pick-up area and your child has not arrived promptly;· Please proceed with caution when driving on school grounds;· Please indicate when changing lanes and pulling into and out of parks;· Please consider the time it takes to collect your child and plan accordingly;· Please understand that this system works best when students are waiting for parents to arrive, not when parents are waiting for students to arrive. Consider agreeing to pick up your child slightly later than 3:30pm to avoid ‘peak times’ which include bus arrivals.

This will be trialled effective from Tuesday 29 March, immediately after the Easter break, until the end of term when it will be evaluated.

Reminder: Please make sure when exiting the carpark onto Mahers Lane to look in both directions.

I look forward to your support and patience during this trial as we continue to ensure that every student arrives and departs in a safe and efficient manner. Kitty Guerin, Acting Principal

This is the first time an event such as this has been broadcast live into schools by Generation Next and our Theatre proved to be the perfect venue. The high quality of the sound combined with the speed and reliability of the electronic equipment that is available in the Theatre ensured that the day was a very successful one for all involved. Also, congratulations to Lindsey Nolan who won the social media competition run throughout the day by uploading a short film clip titled ‘The most valuable thing that I learnt today….’

Meg Ayers, Head of Pastoral Care

The Perils and Promises of PraiseThe wrong kind of praise creates self-defeating behaviour. The right kind motivates students to learn.

At Lindisfarne our teachers actively target our praise to focus on developing a growth mindset within our students. Research shows that students who have a fixed mindset about their intelligence struggle to achieve in the face of challenges whilst students with a growth mindset relish the chance to push themselves and therefore are more successful learners. The following paragraphs are excerpts from “The Perils and Promises of Praise” by researcher, Carol Dweck.

We know that praise is intricately connected to how students view their intelligence. Some students believe that their intellectual ability is a fixed trait. They have a certain amount of intelligence, and that’s that.

Other students believe that their intellectual ability is something they can develop through effort and education. They don’t necessarily believe that anyone can become an Einstein or a Mozart, but they do understand that even Einstein and Mozart had to put in years of effort to become who they were. When students believe that they can develop their intelligence, they focus on doing just that. Not worrying about how smart they will appear, they take on challenges and stick to them.

The fixed and growth mindsets create two different psychological worlds. In the fixed mindset, students care first and foremost about how they’ll be judged: smart or not smart. Repeatedly, students with this mindset reject opportunities to learn if they might make mistakes. When they do make mistakes or reveal deficiencies, rather than correct them, they try to hide them.

By contrast, in the growth mindset, students care

Recording Studio Project #2On Thursday 17 March, the recording sessions commenced for the second album. The sessions are scheduled to run all weekend and involve a number of Lindisfarne students taking part as song writers, performing musicians or engineers. This album is set to release mid year 2016.

Zed Butel plays at BLEACH* FESTIVAL On Thursday 10 March, Zed Butel performed at the Robina Promenade as part of the Bleach* Festival which runs from 4 March to 20 March in venues across the Gold Coast. The Promenade has been transformed for three weeks to host events during this Festival time. Zed's performance was one of over fifty being staged over the seventeen days.

Well known to the Lindisfarne community, Zed's considerable musical ability is also appreciated by the wider community. He regularly plays at a number of local venues performing from a range of Blues and Folk music inspired repertoire. In musical terms he is a rarity, not only because he is achieving so much atsuch a young age, but also because of the seemingly effortless way in which he performs, always drawing in his audience.

Broughton Anglican College Combined Schools Workshop and Concert

Broughton Anglican College in Sydney visited Lindisfarne last Thursday, bringing a great mixed bag of Band, Choir and String Ensemble repertoire. Approximately 75 school students and their

teachers, instruments, music stands and an impressive percussion collection made their way to our Mahers Lane Campus. Both Broughton and Lindisfarne students and teachers workshopped skills and repertoire prior to presenting a combined concert to a large and appreciative audience of students, parents and community members. It was a great day of learning and entertainment for all involved and we thank Broughton Anglican College for including us in their 2016 tour itinerary.

On Tuesday 8 March, seven senior students attended the International Women’s Day Youth Breakfast at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. Throughout the morning students enjoyed a beautiful breakfast whilst listening to very motivational speakers from a range of fields including sport, performing arts, community work, social justice, IT innovation and leadership.

Their presentations contained powerful messages to the female youth and the variety ensured that there was something for each and every audience member to relate to. Equality between men and women became a powerful topic and the health issues women face daily.

Gabriela Bryant and Meg Whiticker were finalists in the Youth Leadership awards category which allowed them to be recognised for their leadership qualities. The morning was a success and truly enjoyed by all.

Pictured L-R: Year 10 Geographers Kristy Byrne, Jock Ackroyd, Ella Bordiss and Bek Jenkins observing the adaptations of dune vegetation at North Kingscliff.

This week our Year 10 Geography students undertook fieldwork to Kingscliff beach. Their aim was to evaluate the relative merits of different erosion control measures, view the site of the proposed Kingscliff Central Park and observe the characteristics of dune vegetation on a transect located at North Kingscliff. Our thanks are extendedto Tweed Shire Council coastal engineer Mr Matthew Lee who walked students through the various design features and costs of the sea wall, vertical piled concrete wall, geotextile bag and sea-groyne options to protect Kingscliff’s coastline.

Students are now working on their individual Research Action Plan where they are designing their interpretation of how the Kingscliff Foreshore Revitalisation Plan should look.

Sports NewsAFLLindisfarne entered 3 teams at the AFL Queensland Schools Cup Northern Rivers Challenge held in Byron Bay on Wednesday 9 March. Both the Senior and Junior Boys placed 4th in their divisions and played a very entertaining brand of football throughout the day.

The Junior Boys only lost 1 game all day, however due to a lower for and against percentage didn’t make it through to the Grand Final. The Senior Boys weren’t as successful as their junior counterparts winning 1 game out of 3.

The Lindisfarne Senior Girls were the talk of the whole tournament, winning both their pool games and the Grand Final against Xavier Catholic College. The girls didn’t just win their games they dominated them. Thoughtout the day they concededjust 3 points total in all their matches. The girls tackled hard, played with courage and showed enthusiasm. They now await to see their next opponents as they progress through the tournament.

Each Thursday for recreational sport, a happy group of 30 fishers gather rods and reels and go fishing. And who wouldn’t be happy! We have had glorious weather and tight lines, fishing from jetties and riverside beaches in Terranora Inlet and the Tweed River. Our main target species is bream and with prawns and light line, we catch quite a few. We always catch and release and have found one spot that has been particularly good. However, we can be forgiven for not revealing where it is!
