What Is Zinc(Zn)?

Page 3: Phase: Solid Color: Bluish-white metal Hardness: Relatively soft Luster: Exhibits a shine Physical Properties Of Zinc:

Zinc is not an abundant element in

nature,Although zinc ores

are widely and abundantly distributed

throughout the world.

Chemical Properties Of Zinc:

Zinc is a fairly reactive metal that will combine with oxygen and other

non-metals.

Zinc metal tarnishes in moist air and burns in

air to form a white “Zinc Oxide”.

Physical Properties of Copper:

Color: Reddish brownMalleability: Capable of being shaped or bended

Duct ability: easily pulled or stretched into thin

wireLuster: has a shine or

glowConductivity: excellent

transmission of heat and electricity

Chemical Properties

Toxicity: poisonous in large amounts

-Softer than Iron but harder than zinc

-Copper absorbs moister and a green layer is formed on top of it. It is called "Patina”;this coating protects the metal

from being eroded.

How does a copper and zinc battery work

First ever battery!

Battery I am building!

How to make the zinc sulfate solution.

Take the sulfuric acid and pour into a beaker.

Then take the zinc tablets and let them turn into a

powdery form in the water then take a stick and stir

the powder into the solution.

Then you have your zinc sulfate!

How to make a copper sulfate solution

After you make the zinc sulfate, you want to take the copper sulfate crystals and pour or

drop in the crystals and let sit till there is a layer of sulfate.

QUESTION

WHY ARE TRIALS 1 & 2 DIFFERENT FROM

TRIALS 2 & 3?

Page 20: Phase: Solid Color: Bluish-white metal Hardness: Relatively soft Luster: Exhibits a shine Physical Properties Of Zinc:

ANSWER

WITHOUT BOTH SULFATES THE ELECTODES DON’T MOVE AS FAST AS IF BOTH SULFATES (ELECTROLITE)

WERE IN THE SOLUTION WITH TRIALS 1 & 2

Page 21: Phase: Solid Color: Bluish-white metal Hardness: Relatively soft Luster: Exhibits a shine Physical Properties Of Zinc:

Trials 3 & 4 with both sulfates in the sulfuric acid the electrodes move

faster. So the faster the electrodes go through both metals the higher

the voltage will be at first and as time goes by the anode (positive charge) in the battery starts to wear out and the cathode(negitive charge )builds

up and as the positive charge stars to wear down in the copper there is no

more positive charge in the battery so there is no current for the electrodes

two flow through.
