Good morning everyone and welcome to Week 3
of your Phonics learning at home!
We hope you are all staying safe and working
hard. We still really miss you all, though it's
hard to believe it's been 3 weeks already!
This week we're really going to look in detail at
SPLIT DIAGRAPHS. You have all seen these
before because we have come across them whilst
we have been looking at different ways of
spelling the vowel sounds.

3
These are your split vowel diagrahs...
They are called split diagrahs because the two
letters are split apart to create a space in the
middle... ae a eee e eie i eoe o eue u e

Even though the letters are split apart it is still
the same diagraph so it makes one sound.
This is why we use a curved sound button for
split diagraphs.
We never hear the 'e'.
The space in the middle is filled with another
diagraph (sound).

and see some examples.

For your reading task today you're going to play
'Sound Buttons' - do you remember how to play?
Use the sound buttons to say each grapheme out
loud and then blend the graphemes to read the word.
Remember - slide your finger along the curved button
to read the split diagraph, and then go back to the
grapheme in between,

Great job everyone!
How did you get on?
Did you use the sound buttons to help?
Were there any words you couldn't read?
Write them down in your workbook and find
some time later today to have another look at
them - don't forget to write the date and 'Phonics'
and to use beautiful handwriting!

Okay, now we need to practise writing these words.
Look carefully at each word on the next page and
identify which split diagraph it has. Some of them are
words you have just read and some are new words.
Now draw a table into your workbooks and write the
words in the correct column. I've done some for you
so you can see what I mean.

Very well done everyone!
How did you find that?
Did you put all of the words in the right
column? Could you read them all?
How does your handwriting look - did you try
your very best?

Well that's all for phonics today guys - can you
believe you have started your third week of
doing phoincs at home? You are doing
brilliantly so well done!
Remember, it doesn't stop here. Look at those
words you couldn't read earlier that you wrote
in your book and why not try to add some more
words of your own into the table - you might
find some when you're reading!
