Principal’s Note

Welcome Back!

What a wonderful start we have had to Term 3! It has

been pleasing to see our students settled and engaged

in their learning from day one this term. While we

thought last term was busy and productive, this term is

already proving to be ‘jam packed’ with exciting

opportunities for learning and new experiences.

School Upgrade – Phase 2

Our first phase of the school upgrade included new

synthetic courts and new play area, new computer and

STEM lab, redevelopment of our administration

building, and painting and recarpeting throughout the

school.

I am excited to announce that Phase 2 is about to

commence. On our front page of the newsletter you

would have seen the new design for our School LED

Sign. In the coming weeks you will see the

commencement of works for the sign installation as

well as new totems which display our core values.

During this time the front entrance drop off point will

change to the right hand side of the front veranda. This

is only a short term change due to safety precautions

that need to be put in place while the installation is

taking place. Once this is complete, paving at the front

of the school will commence. This will also include the

erection of three new flagpoles, grey paving at the

entrance of the school and around the poles as well as

the installation of the personalised engraved pavers

around the rose beds. We will also have the mud

kitchens in the play area installed, just in time for use

when the weather warms up.

COVID-19 Update

With Term 3 underway, the new world of COVID-19 is

constantly changing and the Department of Education

provides us with regular updates on health advice and

changes to state and national restrictions. Schools

continue to be safe and operations are in line with the

Australian Health Protection Principal Committee

(AHPPC) and NSW Health advice. Under this advice,

schools are not required to conduct widespread

temperature screening nor does anyone need to wear

masks. The Department will continue to provide

essential hygiene products to ensure all schools have

enough supplies.

The majority of school-based activities can

recommence, as long as the following measures are

observed:

• all visitors and external to school providers

must adhere to relevant hygiene, distancing

and safety protocols

• principals may continue to restrict, limit or

prohibit activities if they are seen as contrary

to the current health advice

• external providers and visitors are required to

demonstrate compliance with health and

safety requirements including adhering to

strict guidelines and completing relevant forms

• non-essential adults are still not permitted

on school grounds or at school events – this

includes parents/carers unless specifically

approved by the principal.

All visitors must report to the front office, no

exceptions.

The following school activities have recommenced for

Term 3;

• All school sport and activities including

competitions aligned with current health

advice (including those activities run by

external organisations).

• Inter-school student events and competitions

(choirs, sport , debating, public speaking etc)

• SRE/SEE lessons. Provided the volunteers are

not in a high risk category and are prepared to

work in a school environment.

• Allied health providers, wellbeing and case

management professionals (including NDIS

suppliers and health programs such as student

vaccination programs and dental health

programs)

• Incursions/external adult providers to support

delivery of curriculum (e.g. music tutors, sport

skills development programs, science

demonstrations, drama tutors, Healthy Harold)

and day field trips to outdoor locations that

require minimal physical distancing

considerations (e.g. DoE Environmental

Education Centres)

• Parent/teacher meetings – where these need

to take place, strong preference is for on-line

where possible.

Junee Public School

The following activities are on hold until further

notice;

• Kindergarten operation

• Parent and carer attendance at assemblies and

other school events

• Parent and carer volunteers – e.g. parent

reading helpers (note: canteen and uniform

shop volunteers are permitted. There is a

scheduled canteen meeting next Monday to

discuss the re-opening the service)

Please note parent drop off points will remain in

place. Please make sure you adhere to the

signs and drop your children off at the

front and back gate. Thank you!

We continue to be vigilant when implementing

infection control, physical distancing and personal

hygiene protocols to protect the health and safety of

students and staff. We continue to enforce good

hygiene practices like:

• regularly washing hands

• avoiding sharing drinks or food

• coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a

tissue which should be discarded immediately

• filling water bottles from bubblers rather than

using the bubbler directly.

Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW

NSW Health has the following website:

https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-

updates#latest-covid-19-case-locations-in-nsw to

inform you of the actions you should take if you have

been in a location where there has been confirmed

cases of COVID-19

NSW Health has requested anyone who is unwell or

has flu-like symptoms arrange to be tested through

their local medical practitioner or one of the

COVID-19 clinics.

School Attendance

We would like to remind parents and carers not to

send students to school if they are unwell, even if

they have mild symptoms. Schools will make

appropriate arrangements to return students home if

they become unwell at school.

Students should be at school unless:

• they have a medical certificate which states

that they are unable to return to school due to

an ongoing medical condition and the

expected timeframe

• they are currently unwell.

Kindergarten Enrolments

We are currently taking Kindergarten Enrolments for

2021. If you are aware of any families wishing to send

their children to Junee Public School next year please

ask them to contact the front office so they can be

included in the mailing list and an enrolment pack will

be sent out. This way they won’t miss out on

information relating to our Kindergarten Transition

Program and won’t miss any upcoming events. With a

hold on our regular Kindergarten Orientation Program,

alternative avenues for this will be communicated

shortly.

Enjoy the remainder of your week!

News from the Classroom

Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 3. It was

wonderful to see all of the students return to school

safe after their break, ready for the term ahead.

Although there is still some uncertainty around the

temporary changes to the way we go about our day to

day tasks, it is encouraging to see a little bit of

normality creeping back in. This being said, it is

certainly pleasing to be starting the term back at

school with a full term of learning and fun ahead.

In our Gurawung classroom, it is business as usual with

our core focus on literacy and numeracy, but with a

small change to the structure of our reading lessons.

Although we still have our reading groups, we are no

longer breaking into separate reading groups with only

one group with the teacher at a time. Instead, we will

be focussing our attention of learning new

comprehension skills using good quality and engaging

text. We will be looking at using our prior knowledge

to help us understand what we are reading, how to

make connections with the real world, the text and

other books we may have read, how to predict what

we might see or think may happen, how to visualise

and infer meaning and understanding. We will also be

looking at improving our ability to engage and use text

by skimming and scanning the text, looking for key

words and information and summarising and

organising the knowledge we have gained from our

reading. We have already been learning some of the

strategies in the classroom to excellent effect.

Our writing will follow on from last Term, continuing to

focus on an information text, but instead of persuasive

texts, our focus will be on writing reports. We are

remaining with non-fiction text types, in the aim of

providing students with a good opportunity to build

upon their understanding of paragraphs and the

development of good sentence structures which was

also a focus last term.

During science we will be looking at how energy and

heat can be generated and is transferred, how we use

it, control it and how it effects the way we live and

respond to different temperatures.

Our numeracy sessions will follow the same format as

last semester which allows greater scope for the

acquisition of times tables and numeracy strategies,

provides time for us to introduce and learn new

concepts and have the opportunity for consistent

revision of knowledge. There will be a much bigger

focus on consolidating decimals for Year 4 this

semester and Year 3 will be focussing on subtraction

that requires trading.

There has been a change to our Library time this term

with our new Library time taking place each

Wednesday afternoon and scripture will begin again in

Week 3.

I would like to encourage all of my students to read for

enjoyment every night and to practise their times

tables at least once a day. Year 3 are still focussing on

their 3 and 4 multiplication facts while Year 4 need to

be practising them all.

I am looking forward to a productive and wonderful

term!

News from the Office

School Banking is back.

School Banking is back. School Banking Day will be Wednesday School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way to help young Australians learn about money and practice good savings habits. For each weekly deposit made at school, students will receive a Dollarmites token. Once they collect 10 tokens, they can redeem them for a School Banking reward. If your child has previously participated in School Banking, or has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account, they can start banking straight away by bringing their Dollarmites deposit wallet to school on School Banking day. If your child has lost their deposit wallet, please contact your School Banking Co-ordinator or visit any Commonwealth Bank branch for a replacement. Our School Banking program is made possible because of volunteers. Thank you to those volunteers for donating their time to run School Banking for our students. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking program parent guide from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
