Major suppliers to the pharmaceutical industry are manufacturers of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), forming the sub section of the chemical industry. Most large multinational pharmaceutical companies have major investments in fine chemical manufacturing, providing them a degree of self-sufficiency. However, the wide diversity of chemicals required by pharmaceutical companies means that manufacturers of APIs maintain supplier power.

Although it is less likely that suppliers of APIs would forward integrate into the pharmaceutical industry with respect to the development and marketing of new branded drugs, their capabilities in chemical synthesis make them ideal candidates for forward integration into the manufacture of generic drugs. Furthermore, many leading pharmaceutical companies have divested some of their chemical synthesis operations in a bid to enhance profitability in recent years.
