A lmost eighty cyclists made the 63 mile journey from Dalwhinnie to Perth on the ride organised by ByCycle, the Perth and Kinross Campaign Group. The ride, dubbed the Drumochter Drop, followed last year’s Ride to Perth popular format, with Stagecoach sponsoring the buses to take the riders to the start point at Dalwhinnie, and the bikes being transported by the efficient and cheerful local firm Abbey Removals. As the riders assembled, many riders took advantage of bacon rolls and cups of tea at the newly opened Tollhouse Catering wagon at Dalwhinnie, while sustaining bananas sponsored by Pitlochry Co-op were distributed to all. The route followed the Sustrans National Cycle Network route 7 to Logierait, where it picked up route 77 to Perth. The riders set off in small groups to cover the first eleven miles along the cycle track to Dalnacardoch. Highlight of the stretch was the sight of an adder crossing the path. Sustrans are negotiating with Transport Scotland to make improvements to the track in places, but there was a sprinkling of punctures particularly amongst the “skinny tyres”. Bike Station was in attendance for mechanical support, and made a clever repair on one split tyre which lasted the remainder of the journey. The track alongside the treacherous A9 is invaluable to cyclists travelling north and south. One group met a couple of heavily laden Australian tourists who were taking their time to tour Scotland using the National Cycle Network which they declared “marvellous”. After Dalnacardoch the riders were unescorted, although provided with a list of facilities they could use on the way. Some completed the journey in around four hours, but others took the leisurely approach to the benefit of the local economy. House of Bruar, establishments in Pitlochry and Dunkeld and the Pitcairngreen Inn were all mentioned as well as the recommended take-away service at the Nisa Stores in Bankfoot. On arrival in Perth the riders were greeted at Bell’s Sports Centre on the North Inch with certificates, slap bands promoting the Bike Polite campaign, homemade cake and the chance to unwind for a while in the Arena Café. Hot off the press from Harvey Maps, riders were also presented with the new cycling map of Highland Perthshire, which shows the 190 mile “Revolution” long distance Perthshire route, the 81 Etape Caledonia route, and five shorter “cogs” circular routes One of ByCycle’s aims is to get people out on their bikes. Ride Coordinator Mike Simm leads a leisurely ride of around 40 miles every third Sunday of the month, generally starting from Bell’s Sports Centre. So will there be a challenge ride next year? Speaking for the organising group Katharine Melville says, “That depends on the committee. These things take a lot of work. But it was great to see the happy faces at the end of the ride. Almost eighty cyclists made the 63 mile journey from Dalwhinnie

to Perth on the ride organised by ByCycle, the Perth and Kinross Campaign Group.

The route followed the Sustrans National Cycle Network route 7 to

Logierait, where it picked up route 77 to Perth.

One group met a couple of heavily laden Australian tourists who were taking their time to tour Scotland

using the National Cycle Network which they declared “marvellous”.

After Dalnacardoch the riders were unescorted, although provided with a list of facilities they could use on the way.

Hot off the press from Harvey Maps, riders were also

onlineHub HQ: 01698 803 929www.thehubpaper.com (HQ)

editorHello again from all of us here at the HUB and thank you for

picking up your most recent edition of Perthshire’s fastest growing FREE newspaper.

I could say that it seems only yesterday that we published the very first Perthshire Hub Newspaper but that would be telling a whopper. It may only be 4 months since the first HUB graced Perthshire’s shop shelves but we have so far including this very issue, covered over 600 local good news stories from in and around Perthshire, living proof that there are a whole lot of good things happening out there.

We have again been humbled by the positive reaction we receive from almost everyone we meet and can only thank our many supporters for their continued commitment to providing content to each and every issue. Thanks also to our advertisers for their faith in us and our values, without our advertisers there would be no Perthshire HUB because as with any FREE newspaper we rely purely

on advertising revenue, on that note, if you are in business we would love to hear from you.

In this issue we continue with our latest features, Tech HUB, Cyber HUB, Natural HUB, Interior HUB and bring you all the latest positive news and views from across the county. Remember, if you have any hints, news or stories or just want to tell us what you think of the HUB you can contact us direct on any of our numbers listed (right) or by emailing [email protected]...

As you read this issue we are already working on issue 10, another milestone for us. We will have had our official launch event at Perth Museum and hopefully well and truly become a new part of Perthshire culture.

European Flag of Honour to fly in Perth

Perth received the prestigious Europe Prize - Flag of Honour in

recognition of its efforts to promote the idea of European unity.

Provost John Hulbert and Perth & Kinross Council’s Chief Executive, Bernadette Malone were presented with the gold-embroidered and fringed flag by Mr Miljenko Doric, Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, during a concert by Perth Youth Orchestra at Perth Concert Hall.

The concert was also attended by a 40-strong delegation from Perth’s German twin city, Aschaffenburg and representatives from twinning organisations in Perth and Kinross.

In 2010, Perth was awarded the first of four parts of the Europe Prize - the European Diploma. The Europe Prize was created by the Council of Europe to reward local and regional authorities for their active promotion of the European ideal, including twinnings, events and exchange visits.

Perth’s entry for the Flag of Honour reported on the year’s European activities, many of which related to the Perth 800 celebrations

and had significant involvement from Perth’s twinning partners, along with other ongoing activities. Work will continue towards the third and fourth parts, the Plaque of Honour and the Europe Prize itself.

The Provost said: “We are delighted to receive the Flag of Honour from Mr Doric this evening, marking recognition of the positive work that is done locally to promote our twinning links in Europe and the benefits they bring to this area.

“Perth is blazing a European trail with this prize. Since the competition was set up there have been very few winners at any stage from the UK, and none from Scotland since 1995. In the last two years Perth is the only UK winner at any stage, and our success here is an important stepping stone in our ambition to gain the prestigious Europe Prize itself.

“With our campaign to regain City Status well underway, the presentation of this part of the Europe Prize comes at a good time to bolster our bid and will enable us to promote our European twinning arrangements further.”

Roseanna highlights benefits of local information websiteThe Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member

of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire has highlighted a website published by the South Perth Community Partnership.

Roseanna said: “The South Perth Community Partnership supports local individuals and groups to identify issues of concern, find local solutions and encourage more involvement within the area.

“One of their big projects is the Allotment and Garden Project which I am pleased to say received over £50,000 funding from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge fund and aims to deliver a locally based community allotment that encourages social cohesion and the reduction of waste and CO2 emissions through organic gardening.

“More immediately, the Partnership is holding a Fun Day this Saturday at Glenearn Community Campus where there will be free fun activities for all the family, such as face painting, tombola, and a bouncy castle. I hope the weather is kind to them and that plenty local folk will get along and join in the fun.

“This website will be a great resource for local clubs and organisations and a great way for local folk to find out what is going on in their area.”www.southperthcommunitypartnership.co.uk

Tayside Fire and Rescue’s FREE Home Fire Safety Visits

Many people are at risk from fire in the home, from families with

young children to older people living alone. A fire can break out for many reasons, from cooking being left unattended or an electrical fault, to candles not being used safely.

Many fire injuries and fire deaths could be avoided if people were fully aware of the dangers within their own homes and had a means of early warning from fire in the form of a smoke alarm. A smoke alarm detects smoke at the earliest stages of fire. If there is a fire in your home it sounds a piercing alarm to warn you of the fire, allowing you time to escape.

Tayside Fire and Rescue’s Community Engagement Practitioner Emma Mackinnon commented that Tayside Fire and Rescue are actively involved in trying to reduce the number of injuries and deaths that occur in the home as a result of fire. Through TFR dedicated team, they provide information on the dangers of fire and provide advice and assistance on ways to reduce and prevent fires from occurring in the first place.

As part of this commitment, Tayside Fire and Rescue offer a FREE ‘Home Fire Safety Visit’ service which is carried out by fire fighters from your local fire station.

This safety check enables firefighters to provide advice on how to make your home safer, what to do in the event of fire and what to do

if you become trapped by fire. They will also give guidance on how to stay safe from fire including kitchen hazards, safe disposal of smoking materials, candles, heaters, electric blankets and dangers from harmful substances. Smoke alarms will be fitted free of charge if required and they will explain how to maintain it correctly.

Every home in Tayside is eligible for a FREE Home Fire Safety Visit. All Tayside Fire and Rescue personnel

carry an identification card and are in uniform. Never let anyone into your home unless you know them or they can prove their identity.

You can access the service in a variety of ways:• Call us free on call us on 0300 123 9998 • Text ‘check’ to 61611 • You can phone or visit your local fire station • Request a Home Fire Safety Visit via www.taysidefire.gov.uk

DM Cameron Electrical have spent the last 18 month’s investing and training our staff in solar photovoltaic technologies.

We are an NIC EIC approved electrical contractor and with the addition of our MCS accreditation, all of our installations are eligible for the Government feed in tariffs.

Unlike other companies in the market who use sub contractors to install their systems we carry out all aspects of the contract, completely in-house, from quotation to installation and after sales services.

Feed in tariffs are payments to anyone who owns a renewable electricity system, for every kilowatt hour they generate. They are applicable to households, businesses and, indeed, virtually any property ownerWhen generating electricity, payments are made up to 43.3p/kWhr, depending on the type and size of the system used to generate renewable energy. An additional 3p/kWh is also paid, when you export any surplus back to the grid.

Tariffs are paid for 25 years and are index-linked to the RPI. In addition to this, you will also reduce the costs of your electricity bill when you use your own energy.

We refuse to hard sell, cold call or be involved with any

pressure selling, strictly adhering to the REAL Assurance code, of which we are also members. We will not oversell our systems and will be completely honest with our clients. If for any reason we believe that your property is unsuitable or the predicted returns you would receive would not be cost efficient then we would advise against installation.

A site survey will allow us to measure up and design a system to suit your needs, after which we will send you our proposal in the post a few days later.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to call us FREE on 08000 327 737.

When the going gets rough, the tough should get talkingNational Suicide Prevention

Week (SPW) 2011 gets underway next Monday (5th September), and Perth & Kinross Council has teamed up with Perth Samaritans and players from St Johnstone Football Club to launch local activities in support of the annual campaign.

This year the focus is on encouraging members of the public, if there is someone they are worried about, to ask them about thoughts of suicide, listen to what they have to say and encourage them to get help. Statistics nationally and locally show men are less likely to ask for help or share their feelings before attempting suicide. In 2011 SPW will be promoting the message that men can and should seek support if they are having problems, and those around them should offer a supportive ear if they are concerned how their family member, friend or colleague is feeling.

The Council supports Choose Life with £94000 of funding, which goes towards a range of projects, including support for people in crisis, counselling, and training. This year, a new support worker

post with Victim Support in Perth and Kinross has been provided, to work with people affected by suicidal thoughts as a result of being a victim of crime. During Suicide Prevention Week, and later on in September, safeTALK and Scottish Mental Health First Aid training courses will be running, which are designed to enable members of the public to be alert to when someone is affected by thoughts of suicide and help keep them safe.

Housing & Health Convener, Councillor Peter Barrett said: “I am pleased to join the volunteers from Perth Samaritans and our local football team this morning at McDiarmid Park to launch Suicide Prevention Week activities in Perth and Kinross. Although there has thankfully been a drop in the number of people taking their own lives locally in the past year, this does not take away from the importance of seeking help if you are feeling suicidal. Equally, if you are worried about someone, don’t be afraid to ask how they are and encourage them to seek assistance.

“We recognise that making that first step either to ask for or offer support can be quite a scary

prospect, especially for men. However, I hope that through this year’s projects, and particularly the training courses we will be offering, local people will be better prepared to recognise when someone is struggling with life and support them to get the help they require. A team effort is what is needed to prevent suicide.”

Karen McCoss, Chair of Perth Samaritans commented: “We are very pleased to be here today with players from St Johnstone FC, and Choose Life, and we are very definitely behind the campaign to encourage everyone, and particularly men, to seek help if they are struggling to cope with issues in their life. We believe that many men don’t feel able to talk about their feelings and, instead, either bottle them up or let them spiral out of

control, sometimes with tragic consequences.

“All sorts of things can cause strong feelings of helplessness and hopelessness – but making human contact, talking, and having the undivided attention of someone can really help. Calling Samaritans’ 24/7 confidential helpline is always an option and equally, we believe that talking to anyone – family, friends, colleagues, health professionals – is better than suffering in silence.”

For further information about the safeTALK, please phone 01738 477828 or email [email protected]. For Scottish Mental Health First Aid courses, please email [email protected] or telephone 01382 424086.

The Samaritans can be contacted 24 hours a day on 01738 626666 or 08457 909090.

Over 200 athletes competed at The Aberfeldy Middle Distance Triathlon 200 individuals and 60

teams from across Scotland, and beyond, flocked to Aberfeldy last weekend to take part in one of the Scottish triathlon community’s favourite event – The Aberfeldy Middle Distance Triathlon.

The race, which is run by Live Active Leisure, retained its reputation as a key fixture on the Scottish race calendar with its challenging mix of outdoor swimming, cycling and running.

The 1900 swim started off the day with almost perfect conditions in the calm Loch Tay in Kenmore, the calm was swiftly broken with the torrent of swimmers as they made their way around the buoys. Leading out of the swim was Gary Horne’s Perth Tri Club team at 23.41 minutes for the 1900m.

The competitors then headed off on their bikes into the highlands stunning scenery to complete the 90km bike section. When riding back into Aberfeldy the race positions sat with Graeme Stewart leading the Men’s individual race, Catriona Morrison the ladies and Fusion Tri club the Team event. Graeme had completed the 90km bike course in a very impressive 2hrs 31mins nearly 5 minutes in front of 2nd place Andrew Scott. Catriona Morrison came into transition after completing her 90km bike also in a very impressive 2hrs 41mins.

Jumping off their bikes, the competitors then began the 20Km run east along the north side of the River

Tay, through the picturesque village of Strathtay. Graeme Stewart continued to stretch his lead on the run. But that wasn’t quick enough to take the fastest run split of the day that went to Catriona Morrison who was 27 seconds faster in 1:21:51, and who crossed the line as the first female, 2nd individual across the line and 3rd overall to cross the line.

The Triathlon’s winners included the first male Graeme Stewart from Dundee University’s Triathlon club in overall at 4:25:30. First female was Catriona Morrison from Stirling Triathlon Club in 3rd position. First team was Sian Tovey’s team from the Fusion Triathlon Club.

Race director Richard Pearson Operations Manager for live Active Leisure commented.

“I was delighted at the way the event had been delivered. This was the first time the triathlon had been based from the new Breadalbane Community Campus and all the campus partners contributed to the success of this first class event.”

“So my thanks go to everyone who made such a great contribution, including the Aberfeldy Community who provided such fantastic support in stewarding and marshalling duties. Around 80 volunteers helped to support around 1000 people, (entrants and spectators) to the triathlon on Saturday.”

POUNDS LOST, ££££££ GAINEDPerthshire Businesswomen’s Network

is supporting a Weight Loss Challenge, with proceeds going to their nominated charity for 2011, PUSH. The participation fee of £39 covers the 12 week programme, which starts on 7th September, a one-to-one wellness appointment which includes a body evaluation assessment and personal plan, weekly coaching, weigh, measure, regular information and updated monthly body scan. The Weight Loss Challenge will be run under the personal supervision of PBN member and Personal Wellness Coach Anne Bunting who has offered her services free and it is hoped that those in the community who wish to either lose weight, regain health and vitality will join.

Anne suggests that there will be the opportunity to add to the fund by asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor the weight loss and hopes that by the end

date of 23rd November there will be many pounds both lost and gained to celebrate.

PUSH was founded in 1989 by two mothers so that their children with learning difficulties wouldn’t have to live in institutions but could have supported accommodation instead. It has now developed into an innovative organisation that tackles social inclusion in the community. This is a unique charitable organisation which promotes Person Centred Planning as they work for inclusion for people with learning difficulties.

A social enterprise charity shop can be found at 190 South Street, Perth with members learning skills relating to retailing through a bronze, silver and gold awards scheme designed by the charity.

PUSH manager, Catriona Palombo, welcomed the news of PBN’s support and said ‘For our members, inclusion means a way to develop communication skills and friendships and for the rest of the community it’s an opportunity to learn empathy, embrace differences and develop friendships.

Having the support of PBN will open up these opportunities for more people to experience this.’

B846 road repairs to begin on Thursday 1st SeptemberPerth & Kinross Council

would like to advise road users that works to repair landslip damage to the retaining wall on the B846 near Glengoulandie in Highland Perthshire will begin on Thursday 1st September 2011.

The works are to be carried out in three phases, in an effort to minimise disruption to daytime traffic. The first phase, starting on Thursday, will be to create a temporary route for vehicles. This is expected to take until 23rd September to complete. During the first phase, overnight road closures will be required from 7pm to 7am, during which time there will also be no pedestrian access. Current traffic light controls will remain in place during the daytime.

The second phase is scheduled to begin on 23rd September and finish on 9th October. This will see traffic transferred onto the temporary route and an overhead telephone line removed. Traffic signal controls will continue, and stop/go boards will be required for two days while the telephone cable is taken out. No overnight road closures are required during this stage.

The final stage, to replace the retaining wall and install a

vehicle barrier to improve road safety, is timetabled to start on 10th October and be completed on 2nd December 2011. It is expected that during this phase, periods of overnight road closures and some use of stop/go boards during the daytime will be required, during times when a crane will be on site to lift wall sections into position. The Council will confirm with residents the extent of closures and additional traffic control as soon as further information becomes available.

The overnight road closures between 7pm and 7am will cover a section of the B846 from the Coshieville road junction for around 2 miles north to Glengoulandie Country Park. The alternative route for vehicles during the closures will be via the A827, A9 trunk road and the B8019. The Council regrets any inconvenience this may cause, and would ask local residents for their patience while the necessary repairs to prevent further deterioration of the wall supporting the B846 are carried out.

Access for emergency services will be maintained throughout all of the above works.

Perth University of the Third AgePerth University of the Third Age (U3A)

is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and is going from strength to strength.

It began in 1986, with 60 members and a grant of £100. Now it has 400 members, making it one of the largest U3As in Scotland as well as one of the oldest. Some of the founder members are still actively involved, 25 years on.

Its members are part of a UK-wide community of quarter of a million members who all have a zest for life and an enthusiasm for learning. The U3A movement is also worldwide. Perth U3A took part in exchanges with a U3A in Poland and Northern Ireland last year.

The concepts behind U3A are simple: no qualifications are necessary to join, there is no curriculum and it costs next to nothing. Its activity groups are run by members themselves - the teachers learn and the learners teach.

In its early days Perth U3A had groups on local history, creative writing, gardening, drawing and painting, and French language. It now has 60 different activity groups, with new ones being formed all the time.

Philosophy has proved popular and members recently took part in a day

workshop celebrating the work of the Scottish philosopher David Hume. Members of the ‘Science behind the news’ group learn about aspects of science featuring in topical news stories. There is a range of groups catering for physical activities and plenty of opportunities for mental stimulation – from book clubs to scrabble. Thriving groups do play reading, share in poetry appreciation and explore the ‘mither tongue’. There are language groups, art and crafts sessions and opportunities just to have a chat over coffee or lunch. The emphasis is on keeping active, continuing to learn, and getting involved in new and stimulating pastimes.

Perth U3A has set its sights on achieving a membership of 500, and at least 70 interest groups, by 2015. ‘We are confident that what U3A offers would appeal to many more people in Perthshire who are looking to enrich their lives in later life. We extend a very warm welcome to all newcomers’ says chairperson, Wilma Coleman.

Membership is open to anyone no longer in full time employment. New members are welcome at any time. Registration day

for the next session is at 10.00 for 10.30am on Monday 5 September at Letham St Mark’s Church, Rannoch Road, Perth. More information is available at www.perthu3a.org.uk or from John Andrews, membership secretary 01738 827275. [email protected].

SUN SHINES ON DUNNING’S PARADEA large crowd gathered to join in Dunning’s

Celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the village’s erection into a Burgh of Barony.

The proceedings started at 1:30pm on Saturday 27th August with a parade leaving from the war memorial. You could be forgiven for not knowing which era you were in as medieval maidens mingled with merchants, Jacobites, street traders, monks, chimney sweeps, Regency ladies and gentlemen and even an Edwardian bathing belle. The Town Crier accompanied by the Rollo clan banner led the way to the Rollo Park.

The Rollo Park had been transformed. A huge Rollo flag framed the entrance to the mercat gait (street) with 40 stalls opening up to a mercat steid (square) and mercat cross. At 2pm the town crier stepped up to the cross and called a crowd of well over 500 to order, announcing the Mercat Day and explaining its significance. He then asked Lord Rollo to declare the market open. Lord Rollo’s good humoured speech touched on the village’s and his family’s changing fortunes. He then asked for three cheers for the organisers and encourage everyone to enjoy their day. Lady Rollo presented prizes to the winners of the fancy dress competition.

The stall holders all reported a very busy to hectic afternoon. A typical example was the W.R.I. where Liz Piggott explained: “We were serving tea and coffee and home baking in the new community pavilion. We planned to run from 1:30 to 4:30 but by 4pm we were sold out. I think that’s the first time Dunning WRI has ever sold out before an event finished. It was very busy but very successful.”

Dunning Parish Historical Society member Hilary McCallum said: “We had a fantastic afternoon. One of our members had made a scale model of a pillory and people queued all afternoon to have their photos taken in it.” Judy Harper, also of DPHS, added: “Another attraction was Simon Warren’s Victorian style postcards, which were a great hit.”

There were games at the north end of the Rollo Park for children of any age, including a spectacular skittles game created by Dunning Community Trust. The target bowls laid on at the bowling club was extremely popular and the golf club was also a great attraction.

Outside the Rollo Park, Historic Scotland’s special exhibition at St Serf’s Church was very well received, with over 200 visitors making it one of their busiest days of the year.

The celebrations continued into the evening with the Community Council Duck Race enjoying one of the largest crowds ever, and all the pubs offered different entertainment and reported very busy evenings.

And to round things off on Sunday, the Songs of Praise in the Rollo Park’s ancient marquee, with a hymn from each century from 1511 to 2011, was very well supported and greatly enjoyed.

Wishart visits local furniture makerThe Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP,

Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, visited the premises of Angus Ross furniture in Aberfeldy

Mr Wishart was accompanied on his visit by Mr Mike Williamson, the SNP by-election candidate for the Highland Ward on Perth & Kinross Council.

Angus Ross is an innovative and exciting designer of handmade wooden furniture, producing pieces which are both artistic and functional.

Mr Wishart has nominated one of Mr Ross’s products, the ‘Unstable Stool’ for inclusion in the ‘Made by Britain’ project, organised by the Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group.

The unstable stool has a stack laminated ash seat which is supported by an asymmetric steam-bent rocker which places the user into the optimal seated pose when working at a desk or table.

Perth Sea CadetsThe Headquarters of Perth

Sea Cadets is TS Fairmaid, situated by the Harbour in Perth. Nationally the Cadets have been going for over 150 years but in Perth since the 1950’s.

The objective of the Sea Cadets is to give young people instruction on a naval theme, and traditionally retired seafarers provided this training with local businessmen funding the unit building. The running costs of the unit, excluding courses and training, are in the region of £10,000. While charities are generous with grants for capital expenditure, we last year purchased a mini bus thanks to grants from the Gannochy Trust, the Guildry Incorporation and the Bernard Sunley Charitable Trust, they are not there to pay our running costs.

At the unit we have a slipway, which we need to extend, and we have a number of boats for sailing, rowing

and power boating. What we don’t have are the necessary volunteers to give the instruction to the cadets.

There are two types of instructor, the uniformed whose experience and qualifications from the Armed Forces, Merchant Navy or another uniformed youth organisation is recognised; and the non uniformed. We need a pool of instructors to assist on Monday evenings and the occasional weekend, particularly with boat work. Health and Safety is a part of modern life so they need to be qualified, and we could arrange the appropriate training.

In addition to boat work we need a Musician! We formed a band last year and thanks to a former committee member and his family we acquired some bugles and a mace. We need to purchase some drums, to replace the ones we are currently borrowing. As this is in its embryonic stage

we combine with Dundee and Arbroath. This combined band has played in Glasgow, Alnick Castle, Dundee, Arbroath and at the Sunderland Airshow. They also took part in the National Championship in Plymouth, where they came 4th. It should be noted that to play the Bugles and Drums it is not necessary to read music, just have a keen ear! A retired bandsman would help greatly.

The unit does have a Management Committee but relies totally on the volunteer staff, which is headed by the Commanding Officer Brenda Goodwillie, herself a former Perth Cadet. She needs the staff so that we really can be a self contained unit and not have to rely on other units, which will reduce the amount travelling that is currently involved and the expense.

So if you feel you can be of any help with boat work, band work or funding please contact the TS Fairmaid on 01738 783682.

Clearwater Battle of the Bands 20112010 saw the resurrection of Perth’s battle of the bands

after 3 years of dormancy. Gavin Munro of Clearwater Studios in celebration of his 10th year in business decided to hold the competition to put the spark back into the Perth music scene. After talks with the previous organizers plans were laid for the biggest and best Battle yet.

There was an overwhelming response and the competition ran from October through to February of 2011.

27 bands applied for the competition and 22 competed, attendance numbers were between 70 and 130 with people being turned away on the busier nights. The Competition ran very smoothly with no problems or trouble at all.

The quality of bands was very, very high and the competition created a huge buzz amongst the local music scene and created a ripple which spread and spread. With more bands gaining confidence in playing to a

live audience, more gigs were sought by the bands which lead us to finding a suitable venue and putting a static rig in for bands to have affordable gigs in. The response received from Perth bands meant going further afield for applicants as originally planned was not necessary.

Last year the sponsorship was kept local and Clearwater Studios funded the majority of prizes themselves but did have support from the local music shops and one promoter.

But this year they fear with the current climate as it is that they will be unable to give the same support as last year. “With a larger venue and reaching out further for my band applicants , I envisage this year’s Battle to be of epic proportions hopefully pulling in 50 + bands, So I am looking to widen the sponsorship pool and bring in some music industry specialists to advise and encourage the bands”.

All bands wishing to take part can pick up entry forms directly from the Studios or go online and add their band via the face book event page for the competition. And this year any music fans out there can sign up for the “die hard fan deal” which will give them VIP entry to all the heats, semi finals and Finals at a reduced price.Any business or music industry representative wishing to get involved please contact Fiona Munro at [email protected] / 07762159154.Live heat draw will take place on the 13th of October @ the Corinna Perth with the first heat on 20th Of October.

Perth Bands Storm Dundeed Doghouse Battle of the Bands Stone Dead , [Perth] Same Jane [Perth] Merkin

[Dundee ]and Shoogar [Lockerbie] all put on an exceptional show for the public at their final for the Doghouse battle of the bands.

All four bands put up a fierce fight for the £500.00 prize money.Newbie bands Stone Dead and Shoogar taking 4th and 3rd place really stepped up a pace in their attempt to woo the crowd but could not quite top the shows that Merkin and Same Jane put on.

Merkin an explosion of big characters dressed in a car crash of pink net, corsets and horror movie clown make- up. Initially my thoughts were “ what is this all about “ but as the band continued down their path of destruction I suddenly realized I was being drawn in by an undercurrent of hypnotic bass beats that had me hooked and enjoying the audience participation show that accompanied their music. The monkey puppet that had adorned the lead singer Joes arm through-out most of the set suddenly became the prize for the audience , who struggled

amongst each other to claim him. They certainly got my attention both entertaining and musically. www.facebook.com/pages/MerkinSame Jane who took the top prize are a 4 piece band based in and around Perth, largely rock and blues influenced they are proud to say they are something a bit different from the crowd of metalhead s, indie kids and pop-punks we see frequently playing the local gigs.

“Same Jane deliver rock to a standard not heard in years, a band not to be missed!”For me the decision was made when their drummer Chris Marshall took up his trombone and threw an impromptu, totally unexpected adage to the show and blasted out a 2 minute solo that stole the show , pure genius .https://www.facebook.com/samejaneband

Perth Choir takes up the ChallengeMelody Movers is a modern youth

choir based in Perth for young people. At present they have around 30 members between the ages of 9 and 19.

Working with modern music which they arrange themselves. Musical Director Victoria Rice is a freelance Drama and Vocal teacher based in Perth, running the very successful drama and music company AD-LIB THEATRE ARTS and is Drama and Vocal coach for JGN DANCE ATTIC’s Musical Theatre groups. All members of Melody Movers are either pupils of Victoria for Drama, Singing or Musical Theatre.

Melody Movers came together

for the Horsecross, Lightnight event in November, where they performed with professional choir Black Voices. Since then we have performed at many different events across Perth.Melody Movers were recently contacted by songwriter Holly Tooze and asked to record her song ‘Children’. The song is to be submitted to ‘Children in need’ and if chosen or not will be rerecorded and released as a charity single. The choir, all 33 of them paid a visit to Clearwater Studio on Sunday the 28th of August and spent the afternoon with Tom Mitchell recording the track.“The choir had great fun recording

the track at Clearwater studios today and can’t wait to hear the finished product; I would just like to say a huge thank you for the experience” Vicky Rice.

Threshold Sicks is the product of a warped hive mind!

Since the seeds were sown back in the early/mid nineties, by founding members Greg McKenzie-Milne and Paul Macmillan, the pair have been

slaves to this intangible entity. Through various line-up and name changes, they have developed the molten core of the band’s sound.

Gracing the stage over the years alongside quality UK underground acts such as Panic Cell, Dragged Into Sunlight, Co-Exist, Bloodshot Dawn and Bleed From Within, to name a few, they are now the best kept secret Scotland has to offer. In 2007, with the addition of Ivan Sveda and Phil Malloch, the boat has been well and truly pushed out in terms of hard graft and dedication. Known to many for their brutal live performances and extreme, original sound, they are fast building a reputation which is taking them further and further afield. With tours in Scotland, Ireland and England, as well as a return to Slovakia, all planned in the next eight months, this is a reputation which is only going to grow. Their debut full-length – The Scorpion Ensemble – is fully recorded and Threshold Sicks are elbow deep in the mixing process, with great local and international anticipation, and look set to hammer home their status as a true underground powerhouse.

Regular performers at all the local metal gigs these guys are well know all over Perth and Kinross, and rightly so have been nominated for the Loud metal recording of the year with “The Scorpion Ensemble” At the SNMA . [ Due to take place this Sunday the 04th of September ]“We like all sorts of stuff .... I mean .... wanna go from Classical right to Hardcore and stop off at the strange and insane on the way .... Think it’s safe to say we all have an appreciation of the heavy side of life.As a band some of our influences are ...... Dream Theatre, Pantera, Megadeath [old stuff] , Carcass, Fear Factory, Lamb of God , Prong , Shakespear , Slipknot ...but that’s just the tip o’ the iceberg! :)”“SHARP, PUNCHING IN THE FACE MIX-DOWNS OF STREET HARDCORE AND THRASH”Hardrockers Magazine (PL)http://www.myspace.com/thresholdsicks

Scottish Aero Club Fly In

On Saturday 26th August Dr John Hulbert, Provost of Perth and Kinross and keen

aviator landed firmly on two feet at Perth Airport Scone to address members of the Scottish Aero Club as a guest speaker.

Since his visit to the airport back in 2005 as a member of the Council’s Enterprise and Infrastructure Committee he was able see first hand the many exciting developments which have been taking place over the last

few years and said he was delighted that in the six years since his initial visit, the fortunes and prospects of Perth Airport have been turned around, the most exciting of which was the return to civilian pilot training.

The Provost went on to say “It is hoped that these developments will increase the use of the airport, bring well paid jobs to the area and help attract business and boost tourism.”

Wear Not Waste!

• Pour flat cola down your loo at night and leave till the morning. The cola breaks down the limescale and leaves your loo sparkling.• If you have a greasy spot on an item of clothing, squirt a bit of washing up liquid on the stain, rub it in with a little bicarbonate of soda and leave for five minutes before popping in the washing machine. • Use a bunched up old net curtain as a scourer for stubborn areas on your bath or sink• Add a sprinkle of black pepper to strawberries and allow to sit for 20 minutes or so at room temperature before serving to bring out the flavour.• Make Yorkshire pudding batter the day before you need it and chill overnight in the fridge for lighter taller puddings.• Use cheap glass cleaner to wipe down glossy worktops and cupboard doors for a streak free mirror finish.

Handy Hints

CROSSWORD SUDOKU

Our kitchens are full of stuff we will either waste or

throw out, so why not wear it not waste it? Not Lady Ga-Ga stylie we should add! Red meat never looks good when you wear it despite attempts by a very talented dressmaker, you may also find you start attracting flies after a few hours too!

Think about Almonds, Cabbage, Carrots, Garlic, Oats, Potatoes, and Rice. How can we use these in skin care? These are good homemade skin care tips and even one for dark circles under the eyes. Vegetable and spices are necessary in our kitchen. They play a vital part in our diet and nutrition. Now, you can even make your own beauty regimen out of those veggies and spices in your kitchen. Here’s some commonly known veggies and spices that can help in the maintenance of healthy and beautiful skin.Almond- almond oil is good for treating dry skin and removing scars of old pimples and zits. Pour hot water on the almonds

and allow them to soak until the skin comes off. Dry them and grind them into a powder. Keep this in a jar. Daily add a little milk to some of the powder and use the paste to cleanse the face by rubbing the skin gently with it. Almond powder can also be added to face packs. Cabbage- is rich in vitamin and minerals. The water used in boiling cabbage can be used to rinse the face after washing. Carrots- smashed carrot pulp makes good face packs. Garlic- raw garlic is known to treat persistent pimples. Oats- Oats are also highly absorptive, hypoallergenic, and help to soften skin. They have the best amino acid balance of all the cereal grains. Oats have also been clinically shown to help heal dry, itchy skin. The edible grains of a widely grown cereal grass, oats (avena sativa) appear in many beauty products. People appreciate their soothing, anti-inflammatory properties, a bath with Oats and baking soda

is great for relieving the itch of chicken pox.

They have the best amino acid balance of all the cereal grains (amino acids work as water-binding agents in skin care products). Oats have also been clinically shown to help heal dry, itchy skin. Oat grains and straw appear in shampoos, dusting powders, moisturizers, and cleansing bars and that’s just the start of a list! Potatoes- apply grated potato as poultice to treat skin blemishes, pimples, boils, whiteheads and blackheads. Radish- paste made from ground radish seeds is effective in removing blackheads. Grated white radish juice is used as a skin whitener. Rice- paste made from rice powder is used as poultice to sooth bleeding pimples and other skin inflammations. Sandalwood- sandalwood is known to treat pimples.

Tomato- red tomato pulps can be used to treat pimples. Good tomatoes are an abundant source of vitamins A, B (including folic acid), and C; potassium and magnesium; and valuable antioxidants and trace elements. Turmeric- paste made from turmeric powder can be used to treat remove wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, minor skin blemishes as well as prevent skin aging. So there next time you go to your kitchen, look closely at your veggies and spices. Remember that your kitchen is a haven of natural beauty products that can

actually save your skin.

You just can’t help yourself at times, Aries, can you! Interfering in other people’s business will get you into deep trouble, so think before you leap and you should manage to get by without too much trouble. Good news is you are heading into a time of change and there will be some endings that bring in fresh hope for the future!

There are opportunities on the horizon and it is very important that you trust your instincts when making your decisions as this is an important step forward for you now, unfortunately you cannot have it all so prioritize and follow your dreams!.

You let your heart rule your head too much and it is time to clear away all emotions and look at the facts. Once you have established them make your decision and stand by it, try not to let others influence you at this time. Try to focus on sorting out you for a change.

You have found the last few weeks a bit of a struggle, still juggling too many issues, at last there seems to be an awakening and you are delegating and leaving down time for yourself, try to keep this new focus as it will help you to let go of all that no longer serve you for your highest good, try to go with the flow!

There is no point suffering in silence, sitting on the fence is not normally your approach, so why are you accepting this unpleasant situation. Time to do what you do best and let people know what you really think, in a diplomatic way of course!

A very busy time approaches so it is important that you are organised and planned as last minute hitches could throw everything in the air. The good news is that there is success and money coming, the bad news is it will be challenging and if organised, rewarding too.

You have been feeling a little low spirited of late and the good news is as the sun moves into Virgo you will find that you seem to pick up the challenge of life and start organizing some fun time and plan a family event. Try to go out into nature as you have been cooped up too long!

As the sun enters Virgo this month you are more aware of attention to detail and the financial position you are in, You will be making decisions on how and where your finances are best placed. Try not to be too restrictive with your cash as you need some for daily living!

Some of you have been really struggling to get by on a day to day basis, your head has been rushing too far in front, time to stop and live each day as it comes, there is nothing positive to come from worrying and you are entering a much more positive and financial uplifting phase, enjoy!

Independence is strength, solitude is not and there is a difference, it is fine to go about things your own way but not to the detriment of those you love. Please allow your family to help to take the weight of responsibility for you and try to relax a little.

That complicated mind of yours could be causing you some headaches this week, try to trust your intuition instead of having a battle of wills with your mind. You will find this is easier and much simpler, life is not meant to be complicate, honest!

From a little seed the mighty acorn grows and as with you at this time your ideas over the last few months are about to come to fruition. A time of growth as new opportunities present themselves in the way of new jobs or projects, try to remember the long term and not to let pound signs lead you and you won’t go wrong.

Well that’s us all well and truly back into the swing of normality. My visitors have gone back to Australia. Having thoroughly enjoyed themselves back ‘home’. Kids are back at school and family life is back on an even keel. Now we just have to struggle to juggle work and family time. Working mums and dads have enough to organize without having to worry about what to have for dinner. I have come up with a few freezer fillers which can be reheated in 30 min if defrosted or about 45minutes from frozen. You can make your own meatballs and sauce but for speed use a good quality ready made one. You can make these in batches so one big pan can be the basis for 2 family meals. Eat half and freeze half . All you need is a big bag of frozen vegetables to accompany them.

Sausage and Potato Hotpot

Good quality butchers pork link sausages1 large onion sliced roughly2 carrots chopped into small dice1 garlic clove crushed.1 tbsp tomato puree1 pint of vegetable stock2 lbs of potatoes peeled and boiled cooled and cut into chunksA little oil for frying

Fry off the sausages until browned. Place in a heavy casserole dish set aside. Fry off the onion carrots and garlic until softened. Add the tomato puree and sausages and set aside. Fry the potatoes in a little hot oil until crispy and golden. Add to the sausages and top up the dish with the stock. Bake in the oven 180c for 30 min. Serve with crusty bread.

Meatball and Macaroni Bake

1 pack of ready made Swedish meatballs1 onion chopped finely1 clove of garlic crushed1 tin of chopped tomatoes1tsp of dried oregano1tsp of dried basilCooked pasta1 large tub of ready made cheese sauce

Fry off the garlic and onion until softened. Add the meatballs and tomatoes and simmer for 15 min. Add the herbs. Mix the macaroni through the meatball mix and put into an oven proof dish. Top with the cheese sauce and bake in hot oven 180c for about 30 min.

Crusty bread Chicken Casserole

Chicken thighs and legs1 onion sliced finely1 small can of sweet corn drained.1 tin of chopped tomatoes1tbsp of tomato puree½ tsp of dried chilli1 small French stick or garlic breadGrated Cheddar

Fry off the chicken thighs and legs in a little oil until the skin is very crispy and browned. Add the onion , puree, tomatoes and sweet corn. Add the chilli and simmer for 20 min. Transfer to an oven proof dish. Top with slices of bread cover with cheese and bake for a further 15 - 20 min in a medium oven 170c until browned ,golden and bubbling.

Frozen berry crumble

Bag of frozen berries2 tbsp of sugar1 pack of ready made crumble mix.

Arrange the berries in an oven proof dish and sprinkle the sugar over evenly. Shake up the bag of crumble mixture and top the berries. Bake for about 20- 25 min in a hot oven 180c. Serve wit ice cream, cream or custard.

Enjoy, love Susie x

WISHART WELCOMES EXPANSION OF ENERGY PRICE INVESTIGATIONThe Scottish National

Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire has welcomed news that the energy regulator Ofgem is to expand its investigation into energy pricing to encompass the question of how the big energy suppliers calculate their profits. Ofgem has appointed a specialist team of forensic accountants to carry out the job.

Figures produced by the Scottish Government show that up to 170,000 more Scots would be pushed into fuel poverty if recent fuel price increases are replicated across all suppliers.

Mr Wishart said: “The Ofgem investigation into energy pricing is long overdue and as

something that we the SNP has long been arguing for, we welcomed it and I am pleased that investigation has now been expanded to encompass looking at the profits of the big energy companies.

“The SNP Scottish Government has supported Ofgem’s ambition to simplify complex tariffs in order to allow consumers to easily compare prices and I know that John Swinney has met with Ofgem to voice concerns, especially about the impact of the recent price hikes on vulnerable customers.

“At Westminster the SNP has also been leading the debate on fuel poverty and have been pushing for better regulation of the heating oil market, which is so important to Scotland’s

rural communities. “The existence of fuel

poverty in energy-rich Scotland is a disgrace. Vulnerable households should not be forced to choose between staying warm and buying essential food and clothing. “Recent increases in fuel prices could see an average of £190 a year added to the

dual fuel bill of an average customer - more than many can afford. “That impact is not just felt by households but also by businesses suffering increases in their own bills while the public have less and less disposable income.

“The situation simply cannot continue and the sooner Ofgem can report and action can be taken the better.”

Between 6.30pm and 8.00pm on Thursday at the North Inch Community Campus on Gowans Terrace, there will be the opportunity to find out about the feedback from consultation held in April 2011 when local people were asked about their community, how they would like to be involved and what they would like to see changed or improved.

The event, supported by Perth & Kinross Council, NHS Tayside and Live Active Leisure, is open to all. Refreshments will be provided, and a creche for young children and activities for those aged eight and up will be available.

St Matthew’s Goes Hi TechSt Matthew’s Church of Scotland on Tay

Street has taken the delivery of it’s services one step further by having them available on webcast for those that cannot make it to the church.

It started out, as a lot of ideas do at St Matthew’s, with the Rev Scott Burton suggesting they have a video link to the Sunday crèche to allow the users access to the service. This has now escalated to a full-blown internet provision thanks to a very generous but anonymous donation to the church that allowed them to stream services and weddings via the world-wide-web.

This was put to good use recently when a couple getting married at the church were able to broadcast the entire proceedings back to the bride’s family in Norway who had not been able to make the journey. It has also enable Rev Burton to stream his Sunday worship to parishioners that are unable to make the services or who are abroad, also meaning that overseas family members may participate in any special family services.

For more information on viewing services of worship or weddings go to the site at http://www.stmatts.org.uk

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) as we know them

now first appeared in the UK as recently as December 1972.

They operate by you inserting your cash-card or credit/debit card into the slot in the machine where it reads the back strip on the back of the card. It then asks you to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) which it then matches to the details on your card and allows you access to your account details. Or, if you enter the wrong PIN it prevents you from getting into your account.

Now, this is all pretty much run of the mill stuff but how safe are you when using an ATM? You would be surprised how unsafe you can be, we have seen Perth hit several times over the past couple of years by ‘scammers’ whose aim is to part you from your hard earned cash. The question is how do they do this and what can you do to stop them?

There are several ways the scammer works but two of the

most popular are by fixing a mini-camera above the slot and keyboard or setting a trap in the slot. This will never be an exhaustive list as the scammers are getting smarter every day and finding more and more new ways to steal your money. I will try and show you how to stop this happening.

The mini camera scam. This is done by the scammer attaching a mini camera to the surface of the ATM but out of sight at the top of the machine. The idea of it is to record your card being put into the slot of the ATM and then you entering your PIN. This then allows the scammers to pick up the camera later in the day and play it back through a laptop or PC and identify the card number and also the associated PIN. They will then use this information to buy goods, foreign exchange or even sell it to other scammers/thieves. The best way to prevent this scam from working is to cover the keypad when you tap in your PIN and also hold your fingers

over the card number when you put it into the slot. I would suggest you always do this anyway to prevent someone looking over your shoulder.

Slot trap scam. This is done by inserting a loop of video tape into the slot of the ATM and sealing it with glue so it does not pull away. The scammer then waits for someone to come and use the ATM and, when you put your card into the slot it gets trapped by the video tape. This prevents it going into the working part of the machine and it also cannot be ejected as it is being held by the tape. The scammer then makes his move and stands behind you. They will then suggest that this happened to them the day before and that you need to hold down the star key and the eject key whilst tapping in your PIN. This is impossible to do as you do not have enough hands so they suggest they will hold the keys down whilst you tap in your PIN. You end up doing this a couple of times and the scammer

memorises your PIN then, when you go to make a complaint about the ATM not working, they lift the tape off the slot and lift out your card. By the time you have reported the problem the

scammer has already withdrawn £300 in cash and spent more on goods…. Best thing to do is run your thumbnail across the slot and if you feel anything catching DO NOT USE THE ATM.

A simple way to share files with friends, family and colleaguesDropbox, is an online service that stores files: • Never e-mail yourself a file again• Automatically backup your files online• Keep files synced between computers• Share files easily with others• Sync files with your mobile devices

When you visit the Dropbox website (www.dropbox.com) to download the software there is a very helpful video to explain how to

set-up Dropbox on your machine. You specify a point, in your file directory tree that you want to be your Dropbox and any directories beneath that point, including all files they contain, are automatically included. Your files stay on your disk, what you have done is tell Dropbox to monitor that specific area of your hard disk and to send any changes up into the cloud so if you lose your network connection everything is still there on your hard disk.

Whenever you perform certain file actions i.e. modify, create, delete within the Dropbox monitored space the changes are synchronised up to the online space. You get the first 2GB of space free but if you require more there is a small monthly charge for 50GB upwards. If you recommend Dropbox to other people and they start using it, you receive a free 2 GB of space.

You can make Dropbox work on multiple computers that you

own, just install the software on each and log into your account. Each newly added machine automatically gets a download of the current server contents into the place that you’ve nominated on each machine to be your Dropbox space.

Dropbox stores one month’s worth of changes to each file in its cloud store. To retrieve an older version of the file, go to the website, elect the file then click on Show Previous Versions feature.

Share with a friends, family and colleagues

If you have a friend who also has a Dropbox then you can set up special directories within your Dropbox tree that are shared between you. This can be shared by group of users whether they be friends, family or work colleagues.

Data ProtectionYou need to be aware your data

is held in the cloud, presumably in the USA so it may be open to Patriot Act inspection and there

are implications under the Data Protection Act in the UK as well. You should therefore be careful what you put into your Dropbox.

In summary it is a great service for data backup, recovery and sharing. For home and small business users this is an excellent solution. All of us at Broxden use Dropbox and love it!

Swifts Have a Strong Opening DayIt look less than a quarter of an hour for Jeanfield Swifts to show Newburgh who were the stronger

with two great goals from Robbie Holden and John Anderson. This stung Newburgh into action and they soon got on the scoreboard with a goal from Bruce

McAdam to send them in just 2-1 down at half time. The second half saw the match settle into an entertaining game with the highlight being for the

travelling supporters. A great free-kick 11 minutes from time saw Gavin Mackie put a bulge in the Newburgh net and three points in the bank for Swifts. Final score Newburgh 1 – Jeanfield Swifts 3

Perth Doo’cot Cricket Club To Be Decided Upon

A formal meeting is being held in September between the five main cricket clubs in the

Perth area to discuss whether to combine and form one club for next season.

The five clubs; Perth County Cricket Club together with Strathearn, Mayfield, Almond Valley and Northern CCs, have come to an agreement with the Gannochy Trust to play their games at Doo’cot Park. They will therefore be known as Perth Doo’cot Cricket Club and are looking to

have everything in pace to enable them to start the new season in April 2012 under the new name.

Since 2009 cricket in the Perth area has been in decline and seen many smaller clubs, as well as Perth Cricket Club, merging to form other clubs. It is hoped that by forming one main club such as Perth Doo’cot, it will stop the decline in player numbers and support a club with a well grounded series of teams. The aim is to get a team from Perth back into the national setup and this is supported by the clubs and players alike. This has been exacerbated by having these five clubs all playing within a mile of each other and the result has been a stretching of both support and players.

The Gannochy Trust and Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Liz Smith, formerly a distinguished cricketer with the Scottish Ladies XI, are delighted that Doo’cot Park has been chosen for the venue for the new club and recognise that it will reinforce the legacy of AK Bell to encourage youngsters into the sport. To mark this, Doo’cot Park will host a six-a-side competition on September 3rd to close the current season.

Kinnoull Start With A WinThe title favourites,

Kinnoull, started their season in the best way possible with a difficult away victory at Rosyth. In a lively match Kinnoull were awarded a penalty after just 18 minutes of the game and Daryn Smith stepped up to take it only to see a superb save from the Rosyth ‘keeper deny him an opening day goal.

The teams went in 0-0 at half time and not long into the second half, Kinnoull were dealt a blow when Richard Doig had to leave the filed after a clash of heads. This turned out to be better news than they thought though as his substitute, Gavin Tinley found the back of the net with 14 minutes left on the clock and Kinnoull wre able to hold off a spirited Rosyth to take all the points. Final score Rosyth 0 – Kinnoull 1

Eilidh Child Loses Out In World Championships

Kinross athlete Eilidh Child just missed out on reaching the

finals of the women’s 400m hurdles in the IAAF World Championships in South Korea on Tuesday morning.

She had qualified on Monday running in 3rd in heat 4 from the advantage of lane 1 with a good time of 56.18 seconds, just 0.51 seconds behind the heat winner.

In the semi-final she was placed in the very unfavourable lane 8 and was up against some of the world’s top women hurdlers. She started well but was quickly passed by the hard running Jamaican Commonwealth Record Holder, Melaine Walker, and the Russian

Natalya Antyukh. Eilidh finished in 6th place in

55.89 seconds, just outside her personal best, and said after the race “I was happy enough with my race, I went harder than I have before but maybe a bit too much at first as my legs started to feel it after hurdle 8” she went on to say “This was a huge step up from the Commonwealth Games as I was up against the Americans and Russians here but it gives you a great taste for what you want to go for. Having given up my job I am looking forward to starting my training this winter and hope to be back stronger next season and read for the Olympics and Commonwealth games”.

In a great opening match to the new season, Bankfoot hosted Luncarty in the first of the local derbies and were less than a minute away from letting Luncarty take all three points thanks to an

earlier red-faced Sean Fergus making up for his horrendous penalty miss in the first half.Bankfoot opened the scoring with a fine finish from Ross Mitchell but Luncarty had soon equalised

with a goal from Scott Peletier before Mitchell struck once again to put Bankies back into the lead to give them a 2-1 lead at half time.

The second half started smartly for Luncarty and they soon raced back into the lead with two great goals, first from the substitute Angus Wilson and then less than a minute later from Noel Meehan.

Then, nine minutes later with the referee checking his watch, Luncarty gave away a penalty which was smoothly struck home by Sean Fergus, sparing him his earlier blushes and that of his team. The final score 3-3.

Great Turnout For The Perth 10kThe 28th running of the Perth

annual 10k race was curiously on the 28th August 2011, 28 years to the day after the inaugural race that took place on 28th August 1983. As a further link between the past and present, one of the participants in the original race, Jim Smith, was on hand to assist with the handing out of the race numbers to the participants.

This was the first time that Steve Bonthrone’s “Perthshire Running Events” had taken up the running of the event and Steve was delighted with the way the day went. He said “We are a social enterprise that is promoting running activities in the Perthshire and Kinross areas, so to see so many people of all ages taking part is fantastic and I am already looking forward to managing next year’s event. We have learnt from today and will take this forward to next year and ensure the Perth 10k becomes one of the highlights in the running calendar”.

Over 200 took part in the event with strong representation from Perth Road Runners and Kinross Road Runners together with a large contingent made up from the main sponsors, Scottish Hydro and a small contingent from one of the other sponsors Campus Sports. On hand to assist in keeping everyone refreshed were the ladies from Hettie’s Tea Rooms and there was a good sale of warm drinks on what proved to be a cool and very blustery day.

The race consisted of 2 laps of the George Duncan Arena then the participants ran out past the

Jeanfield Swifts ground, round the pathway and along the side of the top nine of the golf course before cutting back towards the community college. This was followed by two laps of the North Inch, where the runners were reporting particularly difficult conditions running into the teeth of the wind along the side of the Tay. The route then followed back to the George Duncan Arena.

First male runner back was Stephen Clarke from Fife Athletics Club who lead from the start although he was pushed very hard over the last kilometre. His time was, considering the conditions, a formidable 36m 42s. The first female runner home was Jill Knowles of the Scottish Prison Services Athletics Club in a time of 38m 21s, again an excellent time given the blustery conditions. First local male runner was Patrick O’Kane from Hunters Bog Trotters and for the female runners it was Nicola Clone of Perth Road Runners. Apart from their trophies, the winners were also presented with a bottle of Ossian Gold from the Inveralmond Brewery, who were also sponsoring the event.
