We farewell Darwin very early this morning to make the most of our day and what a day we have in store! We travel south on the Stuart Highway, named after John McDouall Stuart – the first European to cross Australia from the south to the north. We are going to spend a few hours in the beautiful Litchfield National Park. Just two hours south of Darwin, Litchfield has gained the reputation as the jewel of the Northern Territory’s crown. There will be many great photo opportunities in the National Park. We stop to see the towering magnetic termite mounds standing like ancient guardians of the landscape and the magnificent Florence Falls from the lookout platform. Our lunch venue is the Litchfield Cafe and we also have time at Wangi Falls for a refreshing dip, or perhaps a walk. Early afternoon, we continue south to Katherine. Of course, a visit to Katherine would not be complete without a cruise through Katherine Gorge. Sit back and relax as the tranquil surroundings transport us into a spiritual world of Jawoyn culture and history. Discover the music, stories and ways of the Jawoyn against a magnificent backdrop of cliff faces changing with the setting sun. (Breakfast in the motel/lunch in Litchfield National Park / dinner at Nitmiluk)

DAY 4 (BLD) DARWIN TO KATHERINE: Saturday 23 June 2018

BOOK TODAY

DAY 5 (BLD) KATHERINE TO KUNUNURRA: Sunday 24 June 2018

From Katherine we travel to Victoria River Crossing and Timber Creek at the northern edge of the Gregory NP. This park covers 12,500 square kms and is in a transitional zone between tropical and semi arid regions. We then cross the border into Western Australia. The state of Western Australia is the largest in the country and covers approximately one third of the whole of Australia. Just over the border we turn south to Lake Argyle for lunch. One of the many highlights of our tour to the Kimberley Ranges will be our cruise this afternoon from below the massive wall of Lake Argyle into Lake Kununurra, 55 kilometres downstream. The Ord River Scheme was a progressive and far sighted move to develop the tropical north of Western Australia. During “the wet’ the rivers of the East Kimberley become raging torrents. At times the Ord River can empty 50 mill litres a second into the Cambridge Gulf! (Breakfast & dinner in the motel/Lunch supplied)

The Kimberley Grande, Kununurra – 08 9168 4000

DAY 6 (BD) EXPLORING KUNUNURRA: Monday 25 June 2018

This morning we have time for optional flights over Purnululu National Park ex Kununurra (early morning is the best time to fly over the Bungle Bungles). For those of us not wanting to fly, this is the perfect opportunity for a sleep-in! After a slightly later breakfast, we take a tour of Kununurra. The town was established as the residential and administrative centre of the Ord River Scheme - a huge irrigation scheme that was developed in the 1970s. Our sightseeing will include a visit to Kellys Knob for excellent views over the surrounding irrigated land and Ivanhoe Crossing. We finish our tour in town where we have time to purchase lunch and have a look around the shopping precinct. Later this afternoon, we visit the Mirima National Park, also called Hidden Valley. The small park is just two kms out of town. The sandstone formations here resemble the domes of the famous Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park), which is why they are sometimes called Mini Bungle Bungles – it’s a perfect opportunity to get an “on ground” experience. (Breakfast & dinner in the motel/lunch own expense)

DAY 7 (BLD) LAKE ARGYLE: Tuesday 26 June 2018

Touring the Kimberley is one highlight after another, but today will be a day none of us will forget – and none of us would have experienced before! We have a leisurely start before we begin making our way to the Zebra Mine on the Northern Territory border. We’ll enjoy some touring along the way including some unique off-road sights with our local coach captain. Lunch will be freshly caught Silver Cobbler and they say the lunch hits a 10 on the “fish ‘n chip-odometer”!! We’ll take a tour of the mine then enjoy our afternoon tea. It’s now time to board our Wetlands Cruise; the wetlands are situated on the eastern side of Lake Argyle where the many creeks feed into the dam. We’re sure to see a huge variety of birds, in particular, Mr and Mrs Osprey and nest, brolgas, cormorants, ibis, egrets, darters, corellas, herons, whistling ducks, magpie geese, sea eagles – just to name a few! We might see a few Johnston freshwater crocodiles too. How does some champagne and nibbles sound as we watch the sun set over Lake Argyle? And this is the only place where you can do this! What a fantastic last day in Kununurra! (Breakfast in the motel/ lunch & dinner at Zebra Mine)

DAY 8 (BLD) KUNUNURRA TO HALLS CREEK: Wednesday 27 June 2018

Departing Kununurra, we travel south to the Argyle Diamond Mine where we meet a guide for a tour of the mine. It is Australia's only major diamond producer, producing the extremely rare and valuable pink diamonds, as well as fine whites and intriguing champagne and cognac diamonds. After the mine tour and lunch in the Mess, we continue south to Halls Creek, on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. (Breakfast & dinner in the motel/Lunch supplied)

This morning, we continue west through the magnificent red mountain scenery of the Kimberley to Fitzroy Crossing. We enjoy lunch at the Lodge, and later this afternoon we travel out to nearby Geikie Gorge where we take a cruise through this spectacular landscape. The Fitzroy River has carved its path through the fossil "Barrier Reef" formed 300 million years ago, resulting in mountainous cliffs and breathtaking scenery. (Breakfast & dinner in the motel/Lunch at Fitzroy Crossing)

BOOK TODAY

DAY 10 (BLD) FITZROY CROSSING TO BROOME: Friday 29 June 2018

Our destination today is Broome, but on the way, we have a little detour to see the famous Boab Prison tree, 7 miles south of Derby, which was used in the early days as an overnight lock up for prisoners before the final trek into Derby. Capable of holding a number of prisoners, it has an entrance which is about one metre wide and two metres high. Have your photo taken in front of the water trough – at 120m long and 1.2m wide, locals claim it is the biggest water trough in the southern hemisphere. Back on the highway again, we can purchase our lunch at the Willare Bridge Roadhouse before the last leg of our journey into Broome. Broome is situated on the coast at the southern tip of the Kimberley region. It is bounded by wide sandy beaches and turquoise water and enjoys a warm climate with plenty of sunshine. The discovery of rich pearling grounds off the coast in the 1880s led to the foundation of Broome township in 1883. By 1910 Broome was the world’s leading pearling centre. This evening, we’ll get the opportunity to see the “Staircase to the Moon”, a natural phenomenon which occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay. The Staircase to the Moon happens 2-3 days a month between March and October and we’re lucky enough to be here when it happens! Tonight we’ll watch this event, then wander through the markets at Town Beach. Here we can sample local produce, buy hand made products, a variety of international food, and enjoy the sounds of local entertainers. (Breakfast in the motel/lunch & dinner own arrangements)

The Oaks, Broome - 08 9192 9500

DAY 11 (BLD) EXPLORING BROOME: Saturday 30 June 2018

We take a sightseeing tour of Broome this morning. First, we head to Chinatown with the jetty and pass by The Sun Pictures building, the open air theatre owned by the Yamsaki family. We’ll visit the fascinating attraction, Pearl Luggers. It’s often said that Broome’s pearling industry is as rich in culture as it is in pearls. We’ll be taken through an exciting array of pearling equipment with memorabilia from actual hard hat diving suits to the hand powered pumps which fed precious air to the divers below. To hear the stories first hand is a memorable experience. Continuing our touring, we’ll see the red rocks of Gantheaume Point, the port area and we will take time to wander through the Japanese Cemetery. The cemetery dates back to the very early pearling days and bears witness to the close ties Japan established with Broome in the early 20th. century. The first recorded interment in this cemetery is 1896. Literally hundreds of young Japanese divers died either from the bends (divers paralysis) or from drowning. A large stone obelisk in the cemetery recalls those who were drowned at sea in the 1908 cyclone. The rest of the day is free for us each to do as we please – perhaps some pearl shopping from one of the many outlets, some personal sightseeing or to just soak up the atmosphere of this isolated town. Late afternoon, we’ll drive out to the famous Cable Beach where we have a very special farewell dinner planned. We arrive just before sunset for a unique photo opportunity and the opportunity for anyone to ride a camel!! (own expense). Following dinner, we return to our hotel. (Breakfast in the motel/Lunch own arrangements & cost, special farewell dinner at Cable Beach)

DAY 12 (B) BROOME TO ADELAIDE : Sunday 01 July 2018

DAY 13 (B) HOMEWARD BOUND : Monday 02 July 2018

Following breakfast and check-out procedures, we transfer to Broome Airport to board our return flight back to Adelaide. From here we transfer to the Comfort Inn Anzac Highway for our final night together. (Breakfast in the motel/Lunch own

To BusBiz,

Thankyou for another fabulous holiday jam packed with sights to see, places to visit, good food & accommodation.

Chris & I both enjoyed every bit of the tour and everything we did.

We both think the idea of local guides getting on the coach & showing us around, and all the information they shared, was an added bonus.

Keep up the good work.— Bette & Chris Langham
