Many of us may fondly remember the unique aroma of burning leaves associated with this time of year. However, I want to remind you that while Schaumburg Township permits leaf burning, Palatine Township does not. In any case, Plum Grove Estate residents are asked to refrain from burning leaves out of consid- eration for your neighbors. If the fire de- partment is called, they will come out and request that the leaf fire be put out. A word of caution: we have had a couple instances of vandalism and burglary in the neighborhood recently. Please make sure your house is secure (windows and doors locked and garage doors closed) even if your are home. When you leave the house, make sure to use the alarm system if you have one. The annual PGE POA Christmas party will be held on December Fourth at Plum Grove Park Clubhouse. It is a wonderful event for young and old with good food and fellowship. Watch for more details and be sure to RSVP. The party fills up quickly and we are capacity controlled by fire code, so it is important to respond promptly. Hope to see you there. Power Outages in Plum Grove Estates Result in New EquipmentThe “Groundhog Day” blizzard created multiple andextended power outages throughout the neighbor-hood. Bernie Rupe on North Elmwood Lane workedwith ComEd for months to find the cause, and thenComEd replaced faulty old equipment.

Bernie posted updates on the LinkedIn Plum GroveEstates Neighborhood Network site. Here is a sum-mary of the information he shared:

• The outage lasted from February 2 at 9:00 p.m.until 3:00 a.m. on February 4.

• 38 customers in the neighborhood reported theywere without power.

• A ComEd five-year outage history report statedthere were five outages within six months of theFebruary 2011 outage.

• There is a circle through the neighborhood withthe tub transformers in between. It is designed sothat, if a section fails, they can come out and easilyreroute the power without having to place newcable.

• Bernie had seven outages betewen November2010 and April 2011. Six were due to cable faults, with four of those being in one section betweentransformers along Park and Elmwood. Thosefour outages qualified for a cable replacement. The section of cable to be replaced ran across sev-eral backyards.

• The February 2 outage was a problem with theshort above-ground section of cable on Longacres. This affected 45 people.

• The tub transformers are good and will last 100years. They are better than newer ones. Therehave not been problems with the transformers.

• There is a second section of cable which has hadtwo outages in two years. This does not qualifyfor replacement at this time—there needs to bethree within three months or five in two years.

Because of Bernie’s efforts, ComEd replaced cablesand two transformers in May and June. Some of thecable was said to be more than 50 years old. Thanksagain, Bernie!

Civic AffairsSteve Sperling reported that:• Sidewalks along West Frontage Road have been

completed. He will inquire as to whether ahand rail will be installed on the section that ison an incline.

• Palatine Twp. plans to replace the BriarwoodBridge next year. Roland Sachs, the township’sroad supervisor, has listened to our concerns re-garding the appearance of the bridge and thelack of lighting and has relayed this informa-tion to the architects.

• Palatine Twp. does not permit leaf burning, orany open burning. If leaf burning is takingplace, property owners may call the fire dept.and it will come and issue a fine.

• Schaumburg Twp. residents are allowed to burnleaves. Any other burning requires a permitfrom Cook County. However, residents areasked to refrain from burning leaves out of con-sideration to their neighbors. If the fire dept. iscalled, it will come and ask the person doingthe burning to stop.

• Residents of Schaumburg Twp. who are at least60 years old, and are disabled or a veteran, mayhave their driveway aprons plowed, at nocharge, by the township.

• Flooding has been occurring on the vacant lot atLongacres Lane at Frontage Road. It is caused, inpart, because the adjacent business park is pitchedincorrectly. Rolling Meadows is trying to get theowners of the business park to rectify the situa-tion and will talk with homeowners in the area tohelp find solutions. The flooding is not RollingMeadows’ responsibility because it is too far fromthe road.

LandscapingLynn Meinzer reported that:• 65 mums were planted in the common areas.

The burgundy and yellow ones show up best.Next year she will ask neighbors to water themwhen necessary.

• Christmas lights will be put up in early Decem-ber and taken down in mid January.

Frontage Road Bridge Complete The bridge project on West Frontage Road was com-pleted by October 2011, replacing the bridge, roadapproach, and sidewalks along the west edge.

Landscaping ReportThis year your PGE POA approvedfunds for the purchase and plantingof the ornamental fall mums to beplanted at the three exterior en-trances and the three interior en-trances to Plum Grove Estates. Someof the larger center islands weredecorated with two or three plants. We hope you enjoy their vibrant col-ors and decorative effect. Futureprojects of this kind would be madeeasier with volunteers to help withwatering, because we do not have awater source at the entrances or atthe center islands. Thank you toLauri Mitchell for suggesting thisproject!

Driving past Plum Grove Pond, youmay have noticed that the two de-clining Willows have been removed.

This project began last year whenthe entrance designs were com-pleted. Estimates were submittedbut not added to the budget at thattime. This year, five estimates wereobtained and the winner wasMario’s Tree Service of Addison. They worked safely, quickly, cleanlyand at the best price. Replacementtrees will be planted in 2012 afterthe consideration and approval ofthe PGE POA.

Holiday lighting will be placed atthe entrances and wreaths on thepillars around Plum Grove Estatesprior to our Holiday Party and willbe in place until mid-January. Hopeit adds to your Holiday Spirit.
