Diary Of EventsOur Man In Havana, White Christmas, Winter Words, Workshops and Concerts
Welcome to another packed programme of plays, concerts and workshops at Scotland’s Theatre in the Hills. With four weeks left in the 2015 Summer Season, there is still time – just! - to plan your trip to see one or more of these fabulous productions. So don’t delay, book today!
Autumn at PFT brings the warmth and excitement of Cuba to Highland Perthshire with Graham Greene’s hilarious 1950s spy satire, Our Man In Havana. You’ll never trust a vacuum-cleaner salesman again . . .
This festive season sees the return of our award-winning 2012 production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Advance sales are already very buoyant, so make sure you book early to secure your seats to this glittering musical spectacular.
The supremely talented balletLORENT return with their magical re-telling of the Brothers Grimm’s Snow White in February, whilst Blazin’ Fiddles, Skerryvore and Swansea City Opera’s La Bohème take us further into Spring.
The ever-popular Pasadena Roof Orchestra return once again, complemented by The Dime Notes (who bring the sounds of 1920s New Orleans jazz to the PFT stage), whilst a host of outstanding tribute acts complete our concert programme, including Frankly Sinatra and Christine Bovill’s Piaf. And we also welcome back Immersion Theatre with the terrifically tangled tale of Rapunzel - sure to enthral and entertain the young, and young at heart!
Winter Words gets Scotland’s literary year into gear here from the 12–20 February, 2016. We’re keeping this year’s programme under wraps currently, but we can reveal that the Banff Mountain Film Festival will return! Turn to page 25 for more information.
Our Active Arts workshop programme introduces new activities - Crafty Christmas Creations, Basket Weaving and Fondant Cake Decorating - alongside a familiar range of ever-popular favourites.
So as the seasons and scenery change (both outside and onstage!), join us to be enthused and inspired by the majesty our location, the warmth of our welcome and the creativity and talent of those on stage and behind the scenes!
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Theatre in the Hills before too long.
John Durnin Chief Executive & Artistic Director
P.S. 2016’s flagship musical will be Carousel! Tickets on sale shortly . . .

“Listen. You’re a patriotic Englishman. Highly respected. Been here for years. A wide circle of influential friends. It is important that we have our man in Havana, Mr. Wormold.”
In 1950s Cuba, revolution is in the air . . . and the British Secret Service needs a new source of intelligence . . .
Enter Jim Wormold, a hapless vacuum-cleaner salesman. Struggling to pay for his teenage daughter’s extravagant lifestyle, Wormold can’t resist the financial rewards offered for becoming HM Government’s ‘man in Havana’. There’s just one problem: he’s clueless about politics and wouldn’t know a dead letter drop from a double agent . . .
So Wormold decides that invention is the best course of action. And soon, reports of his recruitment of shadowy agents (entirely imaginary) and copies of top secret military plans (diagrams of vacuum-cleaner parts) begin to cross the Atlantic.
But whilst Whitehall is delighted, the regime in Havana is appalled. For it turns out that Wormold’s fantasies are alarmingly close to the truth. And it’s quickly decided that Wormold – and his “agents“ – must disappear . . .
In Clive Francis’s hilarious adaptation, Graham Greene’s classic spy satire (memorably filmed in 1959 with Alec Guinness and Noël Coward) is transformed into a high octane romp through the colourful bars and seedy backstreets of Havana. Featuring a bewildering array of characters played by just four actors, this spectacular tour de force shares the same theatrical DNA as our hugely popular production of The 39 Steps in 2012.

Following their 2014 award-winning success with Rapunzel, balletLORENT are back with the second in their trilogy of fairytale adaptations co-produced by Northern Stage and retold by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy.
A mother who wishes for a daughter with unrivalled beauty gets her wish, with devastating consequences. In the deep dark forest, seven miners are Snow White’s only hope - and temptation is her biggest downfall . . .
balletLORENT’s dance theatre adaptation reimagines the well-loved Brothers Grimm fairytale story of a mother’s poisonous jealousy, deception, compassion and
redemption, with magical mirrors, mysterious miners and beauty as pure as feathered snow; exploring the true cost of being beautiful; the fear of ageing in front of the mirror; and that beauty inside that counts above all else.
This magical adaptation is performed by balletLORENT’s cast of professional dancers, who dance alongside a local young cast of talented performers. Perfect entertainment for all ages.

This illustrated talk will recount two weeks of plant hunting and trekking in the remote

PFT is delighted to welcome back the critically acclaimed Swansea City Opera, accompanied by a 9 piece chamber orchestra.
It’s Christmas Eve, 1940, in Paris. A young poet, an artist and a philosopher are celebrating in their flat. Then comes a knock at the door, a lost key and an accidental touch of cold hands in the dark. So begins one of the greatest operatic romances of all time.
From the irrepressible joy of their burgeoning love affair through to the unbearable heartbreak at their separation by death, only the stoniest of hearts could fail to be moved by this timeless story – whether you’re watching for the first or the 101st time!

Unearthing the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920s New Orleans jazz, expect a repertoire of stomps, blues, and forgotten gems from the era which heralded musicians such as Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols. There’s a twist, too. The Dime Notes play up the sultry melodies which made this early jazz revolutionary, controversial and wildly popular.
Fronted by Chris Barber’s long-time clarinettist David Horniblow, an established figure on the European jazz scene, and American pianist Andrew Oliver, a recent arrival to the UK, the band is anchored by the unstoppable pulse of London’s finest rhythm guitarist Dave Kelbie and Australian-born, Paris-based bassist Sebastien Girardot, well known across the international scene for his swing and versatility!

Rapunzel dreams of seeing the outside world when a young prince and his trusty valet come across her tower. Before the Prince and Rapunzel can have their “happily ever after”, however, they’re going to have to face the witch’s wrath and some hilarious obstacles in this unique fairy tale!

New England, 1873: when a travelling carnival pitches in a small fishing village, an unlikely relationship develops between the charismatic carousel barker, Billy Bigelow, and Julie Jordan, a naïve local mill worker. Within weeks – and against everyone’s advice – the seemingly ill-matched lovers are married.
But Billy’s fiery temper quickly causes problems for the newly-weds. After losing his job, Billy begins to feel hemmed in by the constraints of married life. And his financial difficulties quickly mount. The discovery that he is soon to be a father only intensifies Billy’s need to find some cash – and fast.
So when Billy’s friend, the shady sailor Jigger, suggests that robbing the local mill owner could solve all of Billy’s problems, Billy doesn’t take
much persuading. But the robbery goes horribly wrong – and Billy ends up risking his life, his unborn child’s future . . . and his immortal soul . . .
A dramatic testament to the enduring power of love, Carousel - described by Time magazine as “the greatest musical of the 20th century” – is Rodgers & Hammerstein’s towering achievement. Featuring a large cast and live orchestra, PFT’s flagship production for 2016 promises unforgettable musical entertainment, including June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, If I Loved You, Mr Snow – and, of course, the heart-rending You’ll Never Walk Alone.
If you loved our previous productions of Broadway classics, such as My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly! and Kiss Me, Kate, you’ll love this!
“Rodgers’ score is a seamless delight. And Hammerstein’s lyrics are, arguably,
his very best.” The Guardian
“Sparkling lyrics and ravishing score.”
