Coming Home to God – A Penitential Liturgy
Welcome and Announcements
Hymn
1. Rock of ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood
from thy riven side which flowed, be of sin the double cure,
cleanse me from its guilt and power.
2. Not the labours of my hands can fulfill thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone.
3. Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Saviour, or I die.
4. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyelids close in death,
when I soar through tracts unknown see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.
Words: Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778)
Music: Petra, Richard Redhead (1820-1901) (Ancient & Modern – 772)
Opening Responses
We have said to God – “Give me what I deserve – what is rightfully mine”
and when he seems to refuse, we say that he has not answered our prayer:
Yet Jesus says:
Do not be afraid. Our Father knows our needs.
It is our Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom.
4
We have said to God –
“I have sinned against You and against heaven. I no longer deserve to be called your son or your daughter”
and have not listened to God’s words of love, of tenderness and of forgiveness:
Yet Jesus says: I did not come into the world to condemn it but to save it.
Trust in God – and trust in me.
We have said to God – “It is not fair that you treat sinners so well –
haven’t I served you faithfully all this time? – and what have you given to me for my trouble?”
And Jesus says: This is my body given for you; This is my blood poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.
In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us we ask God to stretch out his arm –
to reach beyond our selfishness – our desire to live in independence from him – to touch and turn our hearts and feed our yearning to be reconciled to him.
Amen.
Collect
Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain,
and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,
may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn
1. Forty days and forty nights
thou wast fasting in the wild; forty days and forty nights
tempted and yet undefiled. Sunbeams scorching all the day;
chilly dewdrops nightly shed; prowling beasts about thy way,
stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.
2. Shall not we thy watchings share,
and from earthly joys abstain, fasting with unceasing prayer,
glad with thee to suffer pain? And if Satan, vexing sore,
flesh or spirit should assail, thou his vanquisher before,
grant we may not faint nor fail.
3. So shall we have peace divine, holier gladness ours shall be,
round us too shall angels shine, such as ministered to thee.
Keep, o keep us, Saviour dear, ever constant by thy side; that with thee we may appear
at the eternal Eastertide.
Words: G H Smyttan (1822-1870) & Francis Pott (1832-1909) Music: Glad with Thee, Geoffrey Beaumont (Thirty Twentieth Century Hymn Tunes – 12)
Reading – Isaiah 55.1-11
The LORD says this: Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no
money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for
that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I
will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you
shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.
Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For
my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
6
thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes
out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Hymn
1. Above the voices of the world around me, my hopes and dreams, my cares and loves and fears,
the long-awaited call of Christ has found me, the voice of Jesus echoes in my ears:
‘I gave my life to break the cords that bind you, I rose from death to set your spirit free;
turn from your sins and put the past behind you, take up your cross and come and follow me.’
2. What can I offer him who calls me to him?
Only the wastes of sin and self and shame; a mind confused, a heart that never knew him,
a tongue unskilled at naming Jesus’ name. Yet at your call, and hungry for your blessing,
drawn by that cross which moves a heart of stone, now Lord I come, my tale of sin confessing, and in repentance turn to you alone.
3. Lord, I believe; help now my unbelieving; I come in faith because your promise stands.
Your word of pardon and of peace receiving, all that I am I place within your hands. Let me become what you shall choose to make me,
freed from the guilt and burden of my sins. Jesus is mine, who never shall forsake me,
and in his love my new-born life begins.

Responses of Repentance
We are gathered together in the unity of god's people. Side by side, we acknowledge our failings
our selfishness and stubborness; our blindness and unkindness.
And in solidarity, one with another, pray for god's mercy and forgiveness
Bless the Lord, my soul,
and bless God’s holy name. Bless the Lord, my soul,
who leads me into life.
Words: Taizé Community, based on Psalm 103 Music: Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) © 1998 Ateliers et Presses de Taizé (Ancient & Modern – 600)
The Lord says this, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you and called you to be mine".
I confess that I have forgotten the great love
that my God and my Creator has for me. I have lived as if i created myself,
forgetful of God's great goodness to me. I have lived as if God did not know me –
and have chosen to ignore his call.
1. Be still and know that I am God, be still and know that I am God,
be still and know that I am God.
Words: unknown, based on Psalm 46 Music: unknown, arr Adrian Vernon Fish
(The Source – 48)

The Lord says this,
"My servant will not break the crushed reed or quench the wavering flame".
I confess that I have not served in the way God asks of his servants.
My words have hurt those already over-burdened; my lack of kindness and patience
has crushed those whom I should have cherished; I have put people down – when called to raise them up;
I have ignored the needs of my brothers and sisters and allowed their light to grow dim
through my lack of love.
2. I am the Lord that healeth thee, I am the Lord that healeth thee,
I am the Lord that healeth thee.
The Lord says this,
"I will tell you the truth and the truth will make you free". I confess that I have not lived as a freeborn child of God.
I have clung to the security of money and possessions – and have become their slave;
I have listened to the voices of the world – and have let myself be seduced by their empty promises;
I have allowed my addictions to hold me bound. I have been afraid to stand up for myself, my values, my faith.
3. In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust,
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust, In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust.
The Lord says this,
"I lay before you a choice: death or life. Choose life..." I confess that i have chosen death, in envy and resentment; in self-pity and disloyalty.
I have known the good in others, but have chosen to see the bad. I have seen opportunities to grow and to change
but have chosen to stay the same. I have seen ways to bring life to others
but have chosen not to use them. in the abundance and beauty of life
I have been content with meanness and ugliness. in the light and warmth of god's love
I have been content with shadows and coldness.
9
Abba, Father, let me be yours and yours alone.
May my will for ever be more and more your own.
Never let my heart grow cold, never let me go.
Abba, Father, let me be yours and yours alone.
Words & Music: Dave Bilbrough, arr Christopher Tambling

O Lord, if you should mark our guilt which one of us would stand?
but with our God there is steadfast love, in our God all is mercy and fullness of redemption.
Hymn
1. The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want.
He makes me lie in pastures green. He leads me by the still, still waters,
his goodness restores my soul.
And I will trust in you alone, and I will trust in you alone,
for your endless mercy follows me, your goodness will lead me home.
2. He guides my ways in righteousness,
and he anoints my head with oil, and my cup, it overflows with joy,
I feast on his pure delights.
3. And though I walk the darkest path, I will not fear the evil one,
for you are with me, and your rod and staff are the comfort I need to know.
Words & Music: Stuart Townend (b 1963), based on Psalm 23

Prayers
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hymn
1. And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2. ’Tis mystery all! the Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design?
In vain the first-born seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, let angel minds inquire no more.
3. He left his Father’s throne above –
so free, so infinite his grace – emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam’s helpless race. ’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
for, O my God, it found out me!
4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
11
5. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
The last two lines of each verse are repeated.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Sagina, from The Bouquet, 1825, Thomas Campbell (1800-1876) (Ancient & Modern – 588)
Closing Responses
Going from the house of God rejoicing in forgiveness
We were bound by guilt and shame
And god has delivered us from our bondage.
When we stood accused by others and by ourselves Jesus noticed us and listened to the accusations
and then asked who could condemn us – so we go, no longer accusing ourselves of sins that have been forgiven;
nor condemning others for the sins that god has forgiven them
We were cast down and weighed down by our sin afraid to begin again in case we made the same mistakes
And Jesus reached out and raised us to our feet – so we go, sure of his confidence in us
to live as he would have us live, people who are free to choose, who seek to choose that which is good.
We have seen the love and power of God who triumphs over the powers of sin and death
And so we leave behind the things of the past and look to the future with confidence. We have not yet won, we are still running the race –
but we know the prize that awaits us and live in joyful hope of gaining the prize
to which God calls us upwards to receive in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Hymn
1. God is our strength and refuge, our present help in trouble,
and we therefore will not fear, though the earth should change!
Though mountains shake and tremble, though swirling waters are raging,
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!
2. There is a flowing river, within God’s holy city;
God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved!
God’s help is swiftly given, thrones vanish at his presence,
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!
3. Come, see the works of our maker, learn of his deeds all-pow’rful;
wars will cease across the world when he shatters the spear!
Be still and know your creator, uplift him in the nations, God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!.

seeking two members for the Treasury Team, to cover both day-to-
day tasks and monthly collection of figures for PCC meetings. No
experience is needed as training will be given. We hope to hold a meeting
at the end of February to discuss what is involved. Please speak to Peter Hill,
Lee, Alison Long or Ann Blackett for more information or to sign up.
Help Needed
As you know, we take part in Christian
Aid Week each year. This year, our treasurer has had to withdraw after some
years’ service, so we need a treasurer for the period 15 to 24 May. This doesn’t
involve complicated accounts, but the ability to count the coins donated, and pay
them into the bank. If you can help with this importannt task, please ring Peter
Townsend on 759286, or leave a message.
Friends of All Saints
Oakham
As from the AGM on 13th March, The Friends will be without a
Treasurer and a Secretary. Is there anyone who could fill either of these
positions? We have a good and varied programme enjoyed by many but
Beryl does need a full Committee to make this possible. Please contact
Beryl Kirtland on 01572 724103 or by email
[email protected]. We are a friendly group!
Rutland Foodbank
The Foodbank is currently short of the following items – your help in
providing some of them would be very much appreciated: Sugar (small
bags preferred); Long life fruit juice; Coffee; Smash; Custard; Long life milk; Toiletries, e.g. soap, shower gel,
deodorant, shampoo shaving gel etc. Thank you.
