8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Parish Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew.
Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true.
God unknown, he alone
calls my heart to be his own.
2. Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust;
what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power, hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.
3. God’s great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought:
splendour, light, and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore from his store
new-born worlds rise and adore.
4. Daily doth th’Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow;
his desire our souls delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand at his hand;
joy doth wait on his command.
5. Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son.
Christ doth call one and all:
ye who follow shall not fall.
Words: Robert Seymour Bridges (1844-1930), based on Meine Hoffnung stehet feste, Joachim Neander (1650-1680) Music: Michael, Herbert Howells (1892-1983)
(Ancient & Modern – 584)
Gloria
1. Glory to God, we give you thanks and praise,
of heavenly joy and earthly peace we sing. We worship you, to you our hearts we raise,
Lord God Almighty, Father, heavenly King.
4
2. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son,
you bore for us the load of this world’s sin. O Lamb of God, your glorious victory won,
receive our prayer, grant us your peace within.
3. Alone O Christ, you only are the Lord, at God’s right hand in majesty most high;
who with the Spirit, worshipped and adored; with all the heavenly host we glorify.
Words: Edwin Le Grice (1911-1992)
Music: Woodlands, Walter Greatorex (1877-1949)
Collect
Almighty and everlasting God,
who gave to your apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach your word:
grant that your Church may love that word which he believed
and may faithfully preach and receive the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Acts 5.12-16
Many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high esteem. Yet more than ever believers were added to the
Lord, great numbers of both men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mats, in order that Peter’s shadow might fall
on some of them as he came by. A great number of people would also gather from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and
they were all cured.
Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 4.9-15
I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, as though sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to mortals. We are
fools for the sake of Christ, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honour, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we are
hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clothed and beaten and homeless, and we grow
5
weary from the work of our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted,
we endure; when slandered, we speak kindly. We have become like the rubbish of the world, the dregs of all things, to this very day. I am not writing this to make you
ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you might have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers. Indeed, in Christ
Jesus I became your father through the gospel.
Gradual Hymn*
1. O Christ, the Healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends.
How can we fail to be restored, when reached by love that never ends?
2. From every ailment flesh endures
our bodies clamour to be freed; yet in our hearts we would confess
that wholeness is our deepest need.
3. How strong, O Lord, are our desires, how weak our knowledge of ourselves!
Release in us those healing truths unconscious pride resists or shelves.
4. In conflicts that destroy our health
we diagnose the world's disease; our common life declares our ills:
is there no cure, 0 Christ, for these?
5. Grant that we all, made one in faith, in your community may find
the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach the whole of humankind.
Words: Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000)
Music: Bow Brickhill, Sydney Hugo Nicholson (1875-1947) © 1969 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 518)
Gospel – Luke 22.24-30
A dispute also arose among the twelve as to which one of them was to be regarded
as the greatest. But Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather
the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. You are those who
have stood by me in my trials; and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you
will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.’
6
Offertory Hymns*
1. From heaven you came, helpless babe, entered our world, your glory veiled;
not to be served but to serve, and give your life that we might live.
This is our God, the Servant King,
he calls us now to follow him, to bring our lives as a daily offering
of worship to the Servant King.
2. There in the garden of tears, my heavy load he chose to bear;
his heart with sorrow was torn. ‘Yet not my will but yours,’ he said.
3. Come, see his hands and his feet,
the scars that speak of sacrifice, hands that flung stars into space,
to cruel nails surrendered.
4. So let us learn how to serve, and in our lives enthrone him;
each other’s needs to prefer, for it is Christ we’re serving.
Words: Graham Kendrick (b 1950)
Music: The Servant King, Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1983 worshiptogether.com, admin by Kingswaysongs
(Ancient & Modern – 489)
Communion Anthem*
Give us the wings of faith to rise
within the veil, and see the Saints above, how great their joys,
how bright their glories be.
We ask them, whence their victory came
they with one united breath ascribe the conquest to the Lamb
their triumph to His death.
They marked the footsteps that He trod, his zeal inspired their breast;
and following their incarnate God they reached the promised rest.
Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Music: Ernest Bullock (1890-1979) Sung by Ripon Cathedral Choir
Post Communion Prayer
Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles
with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel:
by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
7
Final Hymn*
1. Forth in thy Name, O Lord, I go, my daily labour to pursue;
thee, only thee, resolved to know in all I think or speak or do.
2. The task thy wisdom hath assigned,
O let me cheerfully fulfil; in all my works thy presence find,
and prove thy good and perfect will.
3. Thee may I set at my right hand, whose eyes mine inmost substance see,
and labour on at thy command, and offer all my works to thee.
4. Give me to bear thy easy yoke,
and every moment watch and pray, and still to things eternal look,
and hasten to thy glorious day;
5. For thee delightfully employ whate'er thy bounteous grace hath given;
and run my course with even joy, and closely walk with thee to heaven.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Music: Song 34 (Angels’ Song), melody & bass by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) (Ancient & Modern – 476)
6:00pm Evensong
The Order of Service begins on page 58 of the Prayer Book, and the hymns are taken from
New English Hymnal.
