Team Intercessions Training Morning
The curate will be offering intercessions training on
Saturday 4th July 10am–12noon Oakham Parish Church
The session will be interactive, covering all aspects of writing and delivering good
intercessions. It will be a very helpful introduction for those new to intercessions or
wishing to begin leading as well as useful refreshment and food for thought for those
who have been leading intercessions for many years.
All who are currently on an intercessions rota are warmly encouraged to
attend, no sign up necessary.
8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Parish Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. Who would true valour see,
let him come hither;
one here will constant be,
come wind, come weather;
there's no discouragement,
shall make him once relent,
his first avowed intent,
to be a pilgrim.
2. Who so beset him round
with dismal stories,
do but themselves confound,
his strength the more is.
No lion can him fright:
he'll with a giant fight,
but he will have the right
to be a pilgrim.
3. Hobgoblin, nor foul fiend
can daunt his spirit;
he knows he at the end
shall life inherit.
Then, fancies, fly away;
he’ll fear not what men say;
he’ll labour night and day
to be a pilgrim.
Words: John Bunyan (1628-1688) Music: Monk’s Gate, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 823)

Collect
O God,
the strength of all those who put their trust in you,
mercifully accept our prayers
and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature
we can do no good thing without you,
grant us the help of your grace,
that in the keeping of your commandments
we may please you both in will and deed;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Genesis 3.8-15
They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening
breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among
the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are
you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked;
and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree
of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be
with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the LORD God said to the woman,
‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The
LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all
animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all
the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your
offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’
Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 4.13–5.1
Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture – ‘I
believed, and so I spoke’ – we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that
the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with
you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to
more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not
lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being
renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal
weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at
what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is
eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a
building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
5
Gradual Hymn*
1. Fight the good fight with all thy might;
Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right;
lay hold on life, and it shall be
thy joy and crown eternally.
2. Run the straight race through God’s good grace,
lift up thine eyes, and seek his face;
life with its way before us lies;
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.
3. Cast care aside, upon thy guide
his boundless mercy will provide;
trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.
4. Faint not nor fear, his arms are near;
he changeth not, and thou art dear;
only believe, and thou shalt see
that Christ is all in all to thee.
Words: John Samuel Bewley Monsell (1811-1875)
Music: Duke Street, melody attributed to John L Hatton (d 1793), from Boyd’s Psalm and Hymn Tunes 1793
(Ancient & Modern – 631)
Gospel – Mark 3.20-35
The crowd came together again, so that Jesus and his companions could not even eat.
When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He
has gone out of his mind.’ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He
has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ And he called
them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a
kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided
against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against
himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a
strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man;
then indeed the house can be plundered. Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for
their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the
Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’ – for they had
said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’ Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing
outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said
to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.’ And
he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those who sat
around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of
God is my brother and sister and mother.’

Offertory Hymn*
1. O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free;
rolling as a mighty ocean
in its fullness over me.
Underneath me, all around me,
is the current of thy love;
leading onward, leading homeward,
to my glorious rest above.
2. O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Spread his praise from shore to shore,
how he loveth, ever loveth,
changeth never, nevermore;
how he watches o’er his loved ones,
died to call them all his own;
how for them he intercedeth,
watcheth o’er them from the throne.
3. O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Love of every love the best;
’tis an ocean vast of blessing,
’tis a haven sweet of rest.
O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
’Tis a heav’n of heav’ns to me;
and it lifts me up to glory,
for its lifts me up to thee.
Words: Samuel Trevor Francis (1834-1925)
Music: Ebenezer (Ton-y-Botel), from an anthem by Thomas John Williams (1969-1944) (The Source - 414)
Communion Anthem*
Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face;
here faith would touch and handle things unseen;
here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace,
and all my weariness upon thee lean.
Here would I feed upon the bread of God,
here drink with thee the royal wine of heaven;
here would I lay aside each earthly load,
here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.
I have no help but thine; nor do I need
another arm save thine to lean upon;
it is enough, my Lord, enough indeed;
my strength is in thy might, thy might alone.
Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness;
mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing blood;
here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace;
thy blood, thy righteousness, O Lord my God!
Words: Horatius N Bonar (1808-1889) Music: Geoffrey Hanson
7
Communion Hymn*
1. Put peace into each other’s hands
and like a treasure hold it,
protect it like a candle-flame,
with tenderness enfold it.
2. Put peace into each other’s hands
with loving expectation;
be gentle in your words and ways,
in touch with God’s creation.
3. Put peace into each other’s hands
like bread we break for sharing;
look people warmly in the eye:
our life is meant for caring.
4. Give thanks for strong – yet tender – hands,
held out in trust and blessing.
Where words fall short, let hands speak out,
the heights of love expressing.
5. Reach out in friendship, stay with faith
in touch with those around you.
Put peace into each other’s hands:
the Peace that sought and found you.
Word: Fred Kaan (1929-2009)
Music: St Columba (Erin), Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland 1855,
harmonised by Compilers of Church of Ireland Church Hymnal 1874
© 1989, 2001 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 566)
Post Communion Prayer
Eternal Father,
we thank you for nourishing us
with these heavenly gifts:
may our communion strengthen us in faith,
build us up in hope,
and make us grow in love;
for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
8
Final Hymn*
1. Ye that know the Lord is gracious,
ye for whom a corner-stone
stands, of God elect and precious,
laid that ye may build thereon,
see that on that sure foundation
ye a living temple raise,
towers that may tell forth salvation,
walls that may re-echo praise.
2. Living stones, by God appointed
each to his allotted place,
kings and priests, by God anointed,
shall ye not declare his grace?
Ye, a royal generation,
tell the tidings of your birth,
tidings of a new creation
to an old and weary earth.
3. Tell the praise of him who called you
out of darkness into light,
broke the fetters that enthralled you,
gave you freedom, peace and sight:
tell the tale of sins forgiven,
strength renewed and hope restored,
till the earth, in tune with heaven,
praise and magnify the Lord.
Words: Cyril Argentine Alington (1872-1955)
Music: Hyfrydol, melody by Rowland Huw Prichard (1811-1887),
harmonised by Compilers of The English Hymnal 1906 (Ancient & Modern – 828)
6:00pm Evensong
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book, and the hymns are taken
from New English Hymnal.

Earthquake Appeal
The recent earthquakes in Nepal have
touched that hearts of all of us, and many of
you will have given to the Nepal appeal to
support the efforts to help the stricken
people of the region. At the last PCC
meeting it was agreed that All Saints would
bring forward their Mission Giving to
include a response to the appeal. As a result
we have donated £500 to the DEC
Emergencies appeal fund and £250 to the
Paldorje Sherpa Foundation, a charity with
which Beryl Kirtland's son, Toby, is involved.
We feel sure that you will agree with these
decisions, and will join us in prayers for all
those affected by the disaster.
Oakham PCC
The PCC met on Wednesday 20 May, and
the main points were as follows: The DBF
and Cathedral confirmed that all
employees are paid at least the ‘living
wage’; a second Churchwarden has still not
been appointed, and Alison Long is happy
to discuss the role with any potential
candidates; officers were re-elected, but a
replacement for Peter Hill as treasurer is
still sought; income has been over budget
due to some generous donations; donation
agreed as part of mission giving to Nepal
(see separate notice); a PCC planning
meeting is proposed, possibly on 27
September at Launde; boiler planning is still
ongoing, although a meeting with the DAC
has taken place. Full minutes are available
on the noticeboard by the north door.
