SHARING THE GOSPEL JOHN 20: 1-9

It was very early in the morning on Sunday. The tomb stone was

rolled away. Jesus was gone. All that was left inside were the

strips of linen cloth. When John and Peter saw it, they were

amazed. They did not understand all the promises the prophets

wrote about Jesus yet. However, they knew he was alive. He had

risen from the dead!

The Easter Sequence Throughout the Octave of Easter, the sequence Victimæ paschali laudes is sung at Mass. Only a few days throughout the year have a se-quence, which is an extra chant sung following (in Latin, sequens) the Alleluia. Here is the sequence “in slow motion.” Victimae paschali laudes immolent Christiani. “O Christians, offer the sacrifice of praise to the Paschal Victim.” We hear of a sacrifice of praise in many places, among them Heb. 13:15 and in the Canon of the Mass. This we offer to the Christ, who is the true Lamb who was sacri-ficed to the Father to save us from death. Christ is the true Passover sac-rifice, the fulfillment of the Old Testament Passover. Agnus redemit oves: Christus innocens Patri reconciliavit pec-

catores. “A Lamb (=Christ) has redeemed the sheep (=us, a bunch of lost sheep): The innocent Christ has reconciled sinners to the Fa-ther.” Mors et vita duello conflixere mirando: dux vitæ mortuus, regnat vivus. “Death and Life have fought an astonishing war: the dead Prince of Life is reigning, alive.” One of the Church Fathers points out that the devil overplayed his hand. By doing Jesus Christ to death, death had swallowed more than he could hold, and ended up disgorging not only Jesus, but everyone else Jesus would bring with him. Dic nobis Maria, quid vidisti in via? Sepulcrum Christi viventis,

et gloriam vidi resurgentis: Angelicos testes, sudarium, et vestes. “Tell us, Mary (Magdalene), what did you see on the way? (Mary replies) I saw the sepulcher of the living Christ, and I saw the glory of the Risen One: (I also saw) angel witnesses, the face-cloth and grave-clothes.” Recall that Mary Magdalene was favored to be among the first witnesses of the Empty Tomb and the first witness of the Resurrection, when she told the apostles. Surrexit Christus spes mea: præcedet suos in Gali-

læam. “(Mary continues) Christ my hope is arisen: he goes before his ( disciples) into Galilee.” Mary Magdalene not only brought to the disci-ples the first news of the Resurrection, but she also carried to them the beginning step of the mission they were to receive: go into Galilee and see the Lord. The mission they were to receive was to carry this good news to all lands and peoples. Scimus Christum surrexisse a mortuis vere: tu nobis victor Rex, miserere. Amen. Alleluia. “We (now it is you and I who are speaking) know that Christ has truly risen from the dead: do thou, O Victor King, have mercy on us. Amen. Alleluia.” It is not at all incongruous to rejoice in the Resurrection and to beg for mercy, since it is the Resurrection that allows us to receive the mercy of God. We do not rejoice over the raising of Lazarus or Jairus’ daughter or the widow of Nain’s son, because their resurrections do not bring us mer-cy and reconciliation to God. Only the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, True God and True Man, brings us mercy. For this we re-joice Amen. Alleluia.
