Period 2 October 15, 2013 Table 7.Peru is a beautiful place located near the equator in

South America. There is a small population of people in Peru(30,135,875) people total. Peru is a small but happy country. Imagine living near the

coast waking up to the sound of the waves crashing. It jest show how nice it is to live there , but now you are going to hear the bad things like

tsunamis and earthquakes.

Earthquake Data

1970 earthquake in Peru (May 31) Struck on Sunday afternoon and lasted for 45 secondsDue to the large amounts of snow and ice included in the landslide and

its estimated 20,000 fatalities it is also considered to be the worlds deadliest avalanche. Epicenter of earthquake located 35 km off the coast of Casma and Chimbote on the Pacific Ocean, where the Nazca plate is being subducted by the south American plate. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 to 8.0 on the richter scale and an intensity of up to viii on the Mercalli scale.

The earthquake took place in the city of Yungay of Peru.

TSUNAMI DATA

The 1687 tsunami occurred in on October 20 at 11:30. It triggered a tsunami and overall about 5,000 people died in tsunami. It has an estimated magnitude of 8.4 to 8.7 and caused severe damage to Lima, Callo and Ica. The tsunami occurred along the boundary between the Nazca plate and the South American plate. The part of Pisco was completely destroyed by the tsunami, with at least three ships being swept over by the remaining of the town.

Tectonic Plates

The tectonic plates that are causing the earthquakes and tsunamis are the Nazca tectonic plate and the South American tectonic plate. Those two tectonic plates are the ones that are affecting Peru in all the tsunamis and the earthquake around Peru.
