The Dig For Victory campaign was launched by the Ministry of Agriculture just before the beginning of the Second World War. It’s intention was to encourage the use of all available land for the growing of vegetables.

This was necessary as the country could not rely upon the importation of fresh food by sea or air.

The public were encouraged to eat vegetables that were simple to grow. Health and nutrition were important to the war effort.
