Personal Reading Procedure

Critical Thinking

As you read make sure you are critically thinking. You should think which information is important and which is not so much. When you review critical thinking is also important because it can help you decide which information to study. It can also help you highlight and what to put on flash cards. You should think beyond the page and how the reading relates to your life or other things you have read.

Before you read

• Read section titles• Read study questions• Come up with questions as you read• Break up reading pages into chunks• Spread out reading time• Study vocabulary

•When you read section titles you should look for bolded words at the top of each section.•When you read you can ask questions about the text

or characters• If you study vocab words study the highlighted or

bolded words, they are very important•Make sure to spread out reading time so you have

plenty of time to soak it all in

As you read• Highlight important dates or phrases• Write down questions you have about the text• Don’t take notes while reading• Read at least one paragraph before taking notes so you know what

information is important.• After you have read entire section go back and answer questions you

wrote.• Read out loud• Take notes• Make flash cards

When you highlight important information make sure not to highlight everything only highlight short phrases or definitions.

The reason not to take notes when you read is so you know which information is important.

Reading out load helps you comprehend what you are reading.

As you read make and study vocab cards to help you learn important information.

Review• Review what you have read after each

section• Write a summary of what you have read• If you have any questions about the text ask

a teacher• Make connections from what you have read

with past experiences

Being an Active Reader

When you read you should stay active with your reading. It

doesn’t matter if your previewing, reading or reviewing you should stay

active in what your reading. Some ways you can stay active are asking

questions and finding answers. You can also make flash cards to help

you review. Another way is just skimming through what you have read.

When you read you should put yourself in place of each of the reader roles!

Reading Roles

• Connector- find connections between what you are reading and yourself.

• Questioner-write down a few questions about what you are reading.

• Illustrator-make pictures in your mind of what you are reading.

• Literary, Luminary-think about special sections in the text.

Reading Procedures for different Learning Styles• Visual- draw pictures of what you’ve read, make collages, study

charts and graphs, or come up with a game to help you study.• Kinesthetic- make scale models of what you are talking about, draw

a picture or make charts and graphs. Pass a ball around while you review.• Interpersonal- have group discussions, make a class project, and ask

each other questions.• Auditory- read out loud, have group discussions, listen to books on

tape, study with a partner.

My Personal Reading Procedures• Preview- Before I read I like to preview what I am reading, here are

some things I do. I like to skim over what I am reading and pick out important information. I also like to study charts and graphs.

• As I read-I take notes about important information, I also make inferences while I read about what's going on and I ask questions about the text.

• Review- When I review I review vocabulary words, I look at the headings and I study charts and graphs.
