Personal Effectiveness:How the 7 Habits will help you be
“personally” effective
Personal Effectiveness
• Arguably, the two most effective and renown leadership books of the past decade are: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey and Good to Great by Jim Collins.
• This session is about applying leadership principles at the personal (as opposed to the interpersonal) level.
• What it is like to work for a manager that doesn’t know how to manage themselves—and yet, they are managing other people?
• In this session, Jeff Call will provide tools and leadership principles that will help you be a be “Level 5” leader.
• This will not be a lecture. It will be a highly interactive session with exercises and video. Come prepared to engage.
• This breakout session is a companion to the General Session Jeff is leading on Monday morning. The leadership principles of these two sessions build on each other with the intent of giving you “take home tools and ideas” you can use in your personal and professional life.

Level 1: Highly capable individual. Makes productive contributions through talent, knowledge, skills, and good work habits.
Level 2: Contributing team member. Contributes individual capabilities to the achievement of group objectives and works effectively with others in group settings.
Level 3: Confident manager. Organizes people and resources toward the effective and efficient pursuit of predetermined objectives.
Level 4: Effective leader. Capitalizes commitment to a vigorous pursuit of a clear and compelling vision, stimulating higher performance standards.
Level 5: Rare disciplined great leader. Builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will.

A transition person is proactive. They stop the flow of complaining, criticism, reactive language, and blaming. They instead, focus on those things they can influence to improve the situation.

The farmer set out to plow his “south forty” one spring morning. This was an important job, but listen to how he went about his task.
He started early to oil his tractor. Then he found he needed more oil so he went to get some from the barn.
On the way, he noticed the pigs hadn’t been fed. This sent him to the corn crib where he saw some sacks. This reminded him that potatoes were sprouting, so he started for the potato pit.
As he passed the woodpile, he remembered his wife wanted some more wood for the house. While he was picking up sticks, he spotted a chicken that was ailing so he dropped the wood and went to the aid of the chicken.
He figured the chicken needed to see the vet, so he got in the truck and started for town . . . halfway there, he ran out of gas and walked back home.
When evening arrived, the tractor was still in the barn and the “south 40” was still unplowed. Poor farmer. He worked hard all day – and yet he didn’t accomplish a single thing.
