Preschoolers Head to the Farm

The four preschool classes attended their first field trip of the year with a morning at Nickajack Farms. Despite the rain, the kids were still able to have a lot of fun! Students had the chance to pet a horse, play in the corn pit, learn about pumpkins, and even do some dramatic play at the “grocery store” in the discovery barn. before leaving, students were able to choose a pumpkin of their own to take home.

We’re “Koo Koo” for Koo Koo Kangaroo!Students listen to the humorous dance songs of Koo Koo Kangaroo often during their “brain breaks” in the classroom. It’s a great way to focus the students’ energy levels as teachers transition to different subjects throughout the day. on November 6, bryan and Neil, the members of Koo Koo Kangaroo, went from being just a goofy brain break to live celebrities at Knapp Elementary. When the duo arrived, the loud, thumping

music echoed throughout the hallways, stirring up excitement in everY classroom. The show was filled with loud music, silliness, laughter, and most importantly, lots of dancing and FuN! even the teachers had a chance to show off their moves! Thanks again to PAKT, our parent organization, for providing our students with this opportunity.

PaWS is a HIT with Knapp StudentsPAWS is a reading program that allows children to read with a therapy team, including a highly trained dog. The program pairs students with a therapy dog team to act as literacy mentors. The PAWS program has proven to be successful with increasing literacy skills, self-confidence, and the motivation to read.

Our literacy specialist, Ashley Carona, has worked with a certified trainer and retired teacher named Karen and her partner, Roxie the Basset Hound, for the past five years at Watson elementary. over those five years, mrs. Carona had Karen and roxie participate once a week during Panther Time. This year, PAWS has come to T.C. Knapp. During Karen and roxie’s scheduled time at Knapp, they assist students with reading intervention skills including letter names, letter sounds, comprehension and vocabulary. TC Knapp is excited and thankful to have such a unique program this year to aid our students in achieving their academic growth.

Literacy NightThe Title teachers of Knapp Elementary planned an outstanding Fall Literacy Night for the school’s students and families. The evening started with our principal, Miss Self, reading There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat. Families then traveled throughout the gym, participating in fun stations for all grade levels. A popular stop was the “spooky sight word search” where students used a flashlight to hunt for sight words in the hallway. Other activities focused on letter-matching, parts of speech, and figurative language. The night ended with a costume contest where prizes were given for the silliest costume, the most creative costume, and the best-dressed book character. Thank you to all who attended!

Learning is fun at Lohr!on october 17th, the Center of Science and Industry, CoSI, brought their COSI on Wheels program to Lohr Elementary. The day started with a whole school assembly where students began with an exciting adventure into chemistry. Later in the day each grade level had a blast rotating to different stations and expe r imen t ing

with chemistry. The students enjoyed hands-on learning about many topics including forms of energy, states of matter, and properties of matter. Students even made their own super slime!

Tech TalkOur fourth grade students have been busy practicing technology skills in the computer lab and on the Google Chromebooks. We have learned how to create documents, slideshows, and research on the internet for information

for a given topic. We recently created Missing Pet posters to showcase our understanding of the different functions available in Google Documents, an online program that is similar to Microsoft Word. Our students can create a document, change the various font features, insert a picture, and spell check their work.

We recently used the Chromebooks to research information about Native American tribes from Ohio. The students looked for information, such as their tribe’s location in Ohio, type of shelter, tools used, types of food they eat, and tribe beliefs. Mrs. Scaife’s students then chose to display their information in the form of a newspaper, booklet, mobile, poster, or written report. We are currently extending our research of Native Americans with a partner project in our technology class where we are creating a tribe comparison slideshow to show how our tribes are similar and different for each of the areas that have been researched.

Kindergarteners “on the prowl for a good book”

The Panther reading Den made its debut in Mrs. Alterio’s classroom to start the school year and welcome the new Perry Panthers to her class. Known by former students as the reading Hut, accompanied by palm trees and stuffed animal jungle friends, the new Panther reading Den puts Perry Pride on full display!

Large enough for several students at a time, the Den provides a place for young readers to experience exciting adventures without ever leaving the classroom.

Painted black and gold with paw prints and a turf floor, the 20 square foot den is equipped with internal lighting to help students discover new stories. The signature Perry Stadium Panther eyes glare outward from the back wall to welcome all who enter. The only difference is that Mrs. Alterio’s students will be stalking good books instead of Federal League opponents!

Scary! It’s SCArY how much our lohr students and staff love to read! books came to life as students and staff dressed as their favorite book characters. Students in each classroom decorated their door with a monster to celebrate our fall reading theme. It’s scary and even exciting to think what these reading kids will be able to accomplish!

StellalunaLohr second-graders used their creativity to dazzle their audience with a rendition of Janell Cannon’s, Stellaluna. Students in Mrs. Alm and Mrs. Cobb’s enrichment reading groups, created their own puppets and back drops. Under the direction of Lohr librarian, Cindy Farber, students practiced reading expressively to share the story with their classmates. Needless to say it was a hit! Will there be an encore?

CoSI Camp enrichmentour wonderful uNITe group sponsored CoSI on Wheels to come in and enrich and inspire our students to love, love, love SCIeNCe! our presenter instructed us on how the weather around us works. He demonstrated the way a thunderstorm is made and the special parts of a thunderstorm. With the help of many parent volunteers, we were able to have individual classes participate in hands-on activities. Our students had the opportunity to experience air pressure, identify cloud formation and sequence how a storm is formed, as well as many other knowledgeable weather facts. We are so thankful that our uNITe group has sponsored this. Not only did it help benefit our science program, but it initiated many discussions of who wants to be a scientist!

Sir read-A-lot held Knights of the reading Table this year at Watson. our theme, this year, was medieval. our Fall literacy Night was help in conjunction with our annual book Fair. many families had the opportunity to pick-up make-and-take reading skill activities that they could complete at home. They also were able to shop for wonderful books to fulfill their imagination. Crowns were given to our families and students to venture into the land of make believe.

Walk-a-Thon

Fundraising! What a large task! How do we raise money to help support our uNITe/PTo group? our uNITe officers have thought of a fun idea to not only benefit them, but our students as well! This year we had a Walk-a-Thon. It was a beautiful day and the students were able to take advantage of it while getting lots of exercise! We walked around our walking track many, many times and participated in several enjoyable and challenging stations to promote our exercising experience. We had hula hoops, limbo activities, dancing stations, hopscotch activities, and inspiring parents to cheer us on to complete our walking goal. Our students raised over $8,500 to support our school. Thank you to all the donors and students for a job well done!

Hallow-WatsonCel-e-brate good times, come on! We had such a wonderful time at our Hallo-Watson event. Many families and students were able to join us for a festive Fall Party. Many people, adults and children of all ages, came dressed up to participate in the fun-filled activities that were manned by parent volunteers. Not only was this a night of festive fall games

and activities, it was also a night of Autism awareness. Staff from mr. burman and mrs. Frantz’s rooms held a money making concession stand to benefit and raise money for Autism Awareness. They held a wonderful concession stand of hotdogs, drinks, sloppy joes, apples, and chips. They raised over $700. Thank you to all that donated their time and support to this wonderful event!

Becoming Published authorsStudents at Whipple Heights are becoming published authors! As part of the Student Treasures Publishing Program, our children have the opportunity to have their writing and illustrations published into high-quality, professionally-bound books. You can feel the excitement in classrooms across the building as students take pride in doing their very best writing knowing that their friends and family will soon read their “real book.”

‘Caught ya’ displaying Good MannersThis year at Whipple Heights Elementary we are ramping up our efforts with regards to teaching students expected behaviors as well as focusing on what it means to display “Good Manners.” This building-wide initiative is certainly catching on, too. Our students are working so hard to show the world that thy want to be kind, respectful and responsible people. With that, we are trying to positively reward the students in a variety of ways. Check out this photo showing the number of students who earned a “Caught Ya” slip from someone other than their teacher for displaying one of our 15 manners. (This was in just one week.) At Whipple we believe that good manners will open doors that even the beST education cannot!

Whipple Families Blast into outer Spaceon November 6th Whipple Heights held its Fall Family Night which was a huge success. This year’s theme was “Across the Galaxy” and all parts of the night were out of this world! Students navigated their way along using a big Dipper passport, completing literacy and math activities with the help of their family. Once each of the seven activities was completed, they collected a star on their passport. When their passport was complete, each student received a book of their choice as well as supernova snacks. The students also had the opportunity to enter in a raffle to win gift baskets designed for each grade level. We had five lucky winners in all: Ethan Fisher (K), Nathan Gotter (1st), Alyssa Grant (2nd), Alexis DeSantis (3rd), and Alexis Dean (4th). Congratulations to those winners. Thank you to everyone who participated, our wonderful staff and PTO for making this night such a hit!

Rock around the Clock!!!Kindergarten students rocked around the clock on their 50th day of school Friday, November 7th! The children were invited to wear 50’s attire, slicked back hair and even poodle skirts. The whole day of learning was devoted to a 50’s theme. As an added bonus, all three kindergarten classes even took off their shoes for a real “sock hop” in the gym!

Poppies for VeteransAll the students at Genoa participated in a special art project where they had the opportunity to learn about Veterans while also studying the red poppy paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet and Georgia O’Keefe. Art teacher Aimee Sauls remembered that as a child, little silk poppies were sold to raise funds for our veterans, and she wanted to make sure with Veteran’s Day approaching that all the students knew what veterans are, how special they are and that the red poppy was used as a symbol of remembrance for those who have served our country. The students used a variety of media to create an interesting red poppy flower display.

“Bee”utiful Buzz WordsThe students of Genoa Elementary are all a buzz with excitement for “bee”utiful vocabulary. In an effort to help students expand their vocabulary usage and understanding, the entire staff has set aside time each week to work on a new buzz word, or vocabulary word from the Common Core State Standards. The students buzz into school the beginning of each week to learn the new word. Throughout the week students are able to earn buzz cards from any staff member in the building by using the buzz word in their writing or daily conversations. The cards are added to grade level bee hives for weekly drawings. At the end of each week, ten students, two from each grade level, are drawn from hundreds of entries. The ten winners each receive a variety of fun and exciting prizes. From bus, to classroom, to recess, to lunch and bus again the students of Genoa Elementary are all a buzz with vocabulary.

For the Birdsbirds, birds, and more birds! The third-grade students were studying a unit on habitats, with a focus on our feathery friends. Students explored the concepts of behavioral and physical characteristics of birds in a variety of ways. They completed KWL charts, writing about what they already KNeW, what they WANTeD to know, and finally what they had leArNeD. They made predictions and checked for accuracy as they read the content in their science books, and they participated in a hands-on experiment where they “became” different birds. The students used a variety of tools during the experiment to simulate a bird’s beak and “ate” with the beak, just as a bird would. The students rotated through seven different stations during this experiment. As a culmination to the unit on habitats, a former Genoa mother and current zoo employee, Pat Villers, brought a variety of live birds

from the Akron Zoo for the students to see. She educated the students on the physical and behavioral characteristic of each visiting bird, tying the students’ in-class lessons with the zoo presentation. What a rich learning experience!

Malone MentorsGenoa third and fourth-graders received a visit from members of the Malone football team. Team members talked to students about good choices now and for their futures. Students were invited to Chick-fil-A to meet the football team and were given a signed mini football. Students with great behavior received free tickets to the Malone vs Lake Erie game at Fawcett Stadium. The program was coordinated by Mr. Wyatt, who is a Malone football coach and Genoa’s school counseling intern.

Second Graders Get a Visitor!

Genoa second-graders enjoyed a visit from Patti Rante from the Perry Sippo branch of the Stark County library during the month of October. The students enjoyed wonderful stories and fun activities during her visit. The stories were all Autumn-related and got the children very excited for the season! The students discussed story elements, characters, and sequence of events as an extension of her visit. We can’t wait for her to come back to visit in November!

Welcome Home, Mrs. Budd!even though it was a cold, rainy day in November, it felt warm and sunny at Edison Middle School as mrs. budd made an appearance in parade fashion. Edison’s students and staff lined the driveway of edison to welcome mrs. budd home with signs, cheers, and tears. The band played spirit songs, and the victory bell rang as mrs. budd waved to her biggest supporters---the Edison Team. It was a very special day!

Teachers Go all out to Promote Teen Read Week!!

our teachers at edison middle School went all out for TeeN reAD WeeK, dancing and scaring students – all to promote reading!!! We used the 2012 theme: DAre To reAD for the fun of it! Each day throughout the week, we had scary story activities. On Thursday, students were only told, “Friday is scary surprise day! be here …if you DAre!” The teachers dressed up as zombies, but that wasn’t the scariest surprise for the day. What the students didn’t know was the teachers had been practicing a THrIller dance all week after school. At the end of the day on Friday, students were called down for a special surprise assembly. When the curtains opened, they were shocked as their zombie teachers performed THrIller!!!! We have the best staff on the planet!

Red Ribbon Weekedison Junior Teen Institute sponsored red ribbon Week this year from oct. 27-31. The slogan for the week was “Join the FIGHT Against Drugs” and was portrayed in a military style. Junior T.I. members decorated the school showcase, made announcements throughout the week, and wrote and recorded a drug awareness video to be shown to their classmates. All students were asked to participate in themed dress up days including pajama day (Don’t let drugs destroy your dreams), twin day (Don’t let drugs be your other half), camouflage day (Don’t let drugs hide the real you), retro day (Stay away from drugs, you can’t go back in time), and crazy hair/mismatch day (Mess up your clothes, not your life). The events were capped off with a luau dance on November 7 entitled, “Drug Free Perrydise.” The Junior. Pfeiffer iNtermediate

Peer Mediation Program

After a careful selection process and training day by our school counselors, Pfeiffer has launched the Peer Mediation Program for the 2014/2015 school year. Peer mediation consists of fifth and sixth-grade students who have been trained to facilitate conflict resolution amongst their peers. Appropriate topics for mediation consists of misunderstandings, locker partner issues, gossip and minor disputes. This program has been effective for numerous years and has allowed students to peacefully resolve minor social issues.

“I am most excited about helping students get along together, I don’t want to see friendships end,” said rayna Green, Sixth Grade Peer mediator.

Pfeiffer’s Person of CharacterFor the annual recognition of Stark County Persons of Character, each school in the Perry Local School District chose a person whose life demonstrates an enduring commitment to those qualities associated with good character. This year Pfeiffer Intermediate School selected Kelsey Whitfield, a fifth-grade teacher in our building. She and other Persons of Character were honored Tuesday, october 21, at the rG Drage Career Technical Center. Here is the nomination of mrs. Whitfield.

Pfeiffer Intermediate would like to honor Kelsey Whitfield as the 2014-2015 Person of Character. Kelsey routinely goes above and beyond for her students as a fifth-grade math teacher. This past summer she developed, organized and ran a summer

math camp for students entering fifth-grade as a way to strengthen their math skills and ease their transition to Pfeiffer. The camp was a huge success and she had to add an extra session because of the number of students enrolled. Kelsey demonstrates a caring attitude towards her students and they enjoy being in her class. As a member of the PbIS team, Kelsey has contributed numerous ideas to create a positive, caring environment for students and staff. mrs. Whitfield, a well-respected member of the faculty, deserves to be honored as a Person of Character.
