What is zakat and why do Muslims practice it:
Zakat means charity.
Muhammad told people to share their riches with
the less fortunate.
Zakat means purification. Muslims believe your
wealth only is pure and true if you give some of it
away. This helps control greed.

Medieval times- constructing public fountains (for
clean water), inns (for travelers)
Now- Soup kitchens, clothing and shelter for the
poor, orphanages/hospitals. Poorer Muslims receive
money to pay for debt.
How much of their surplus wealth are Muslims expected to give to charity?
Wealthy Muslims are expected to share 2.5 percent of
their wealth with their poorer neighbors. They
are encouraged to donate more if they can.

Shari’ah Law
• Promotes obedience to Qu’ran and respect for others
• Guides Muslims in their relationships and behavior
• Places actions into five categories (forbidden, discouraged, allowed, recommended, and obligatory (required)).• Ex: Forbidden to eat pork
• Over time, European/Western law replaced shari’ah law at the national level
• Some countries still incorporate shari’ah law into their national law
• Saudi Arabia is a country that uses primarily shari’ah law
